John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It’s been 3 months since I came to China. I’m having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I’ve completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn’t appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the
19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals — the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
Yours,
John

On a windy day in June, Fourth Class took the train to Chinatown. We had begun to learn Putonghua and our teacher said this excursion would let us practice our language skills and learn more about Chinese culture.
We entered Chinatown through the arched (拱形的) entrance gate with red painted wooden pillars. Big stone lions sat on each side. Then I noticed that the street signs were written in both Chinese and English. I photographed the sign for Hay Street.
The next place we visited was the Chinese Garden of Friendship which was very peaceful. There were waterfalls, hidden stone paths and a beautiful teahouse. We had a wonderful time there.
At last it was time for our Chinese lunch. We entered a big restaurant that had red lanterns hanging from the roof and red dragons on the walls. The waiters greeted us in Putonghua and we answered them in Putonghua. We were shown how to use chopsticks and how to choose from the menus with Chinese writing. At 2:30 we left Chinatown. We were all very tired. On the train, our teacher told us her experience in China. She was just back from seeing the Great Wall of China. It’s like a long dragon winding its way. We were told it is the longest wall in the world. As we were listening, one student, who I couldn’t name, fell
asleep on the train and snored loudly. His face turned red when he woke up!
In the past, I often told my Chinese classmates how to speak English. Now there are more people than ever who are studying Chinese. I can understand why—it’s a fascinating language, and there are always new words to be discovered! I cannot forget our excursion to Chinatown. Tom Green, Fourth Class

Having a pen pal is fun and can be a great way to improve your writing skills. But most people have trouble knowing what to write to their pen pals. 26
27 Break the ice by telling your pen pal a little about yourself. Start with your name, age and job. Write about what you like to do or what’s on your mind that day. What you pass on will encourage your pen pal to tell you something about his. 28
Ask questions. 29 This will help you get to know him and probably get you a faster answer. Make your questions into the e-mail by telling him something you like to do and then asking if he’s ever tried it.
Ask for advice. You may have some difficulties in your life and want to ask for advice. Your pen pal may tell you what to do. 30 Also, discussing real-world questions will promote (增进) your friendship.
