A Kenyan teacher who gave away most of his monthly salary (薪水) to poor people has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize.
In 2016, Peter Tabichi came to Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, a public school, in a faraway Kenya's Rift Valley. The school had just a single computer and had problems connecting to the Internet. It had no library or laboratory, either. To make matters worse, the students came from poor families where basics like food and clothing were hard to come by.While these difficulties would have caused most people to leave quickly, Tabichi stayed.
Realizing that starving kids made for poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80 percent of his monthly salary to buy food and learning objects for them. He set up a science club to get kids interested in the topic. “Our laboratory does not have everything, but I encourage them to think wider and use what we can get locally.”
Tabichi and other four teachers regularly visited low achieving, at risk students at their homes to provide one on one help and to understand the difficulties these children faced daily. Tabichi also encouraged parents to allow girls to continue their high school education.
Tabichi's efforts have made a difference. School registration has more than doubled to almost 400 now since he came. In 2017, 16 of the 59 graduating students went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26. In 2017, five students qualified (获得参赛资格) for the Intel ISEF(International Science and Engineering Fair). In 2019, two other students competed in the 2019 Intel ISEF held in Phoenix, Arizona.
The teacher, however, owes his success to his students, saying, “I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything.” As would be expected, Tabichi plans to spend the prize money on his school community and feeding the poor.

Going on vacation can be challenging for people with physical disabilities. Hotels aren't always clear about how accessible they are and that the adaptive equipment needed to participate in certain activities can be expensive or difficult to obtain.
This is where the online travel marketplace Wheel the World comes in. The website connects physically disabled people with special tour packages, depending on the person's needs.
Today Wheel the World offers over 30 accessible destinations in the US and abroad. They've served almost 900 disabled people, their family, and friends. Travelers can sign up for trips to destinations such as New York, Hawaii, Paris and London. Trip packages can include adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, which can be used on the beach and in the ocean. The team of Wheel the World also checks the accessibility of destinations themselves, evaluating things such as door widths, bed heights, bathrooms' accessibility and if lifts are functioning.
Silberstein, the company's founder, says there are some trips that are suitable for blind people, though Wheel the World focuses on people with mobility issues. And in the future, they plan to include trips for people with hearing loss and people with emotional disabilities. “One of the biggest barriers for travelers with physical disabilities is finding information about accessible trips, which is a gap that Wheel the World aims to close,” says Silberstein.
Wheel the World is working to enlarge tours in Europe—currently their website lists London and Paris as the only destinations in Europe, but their eventual goal is much higher. “We want to allow millions of disabled people to travel to thousands of destinations,” Silberstein says.
