Faraday was the inventor of the electric generator (发电机) and the electric motor (发动机).Faraday's father suffered from long time health problems. As a result, Faraday's family had little money and Faraday got only the least formal schooling.Actually, he sometimes had only enough to eat.But Faraday was curious and determined to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had a chance to know different books and he read everything he could get his hands on.Thus Faraday soon educated himself on a variety of scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Institution given by a famous chemist named Humphrey Davy.Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his services as a helper.A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Davy also took Faraday with him on an 18 month tour of Europe, where Faraday met some of the most famous scientists of the day.
Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday gained a complete scientific education. He soon began to do research and experiments with electricity. He built two machines to create electromagnetic rotation (电磁旋转), the force used to power electric motors. In addition to helping Davy mostly, Faraday began to appear on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. He began to give lectures one after another.Soon he was accepted as a gifted lecturer and published many research papers.
When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Institute.Upon accepting the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday's best known work began in the 1830s.In 1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction (电磁感应).And for the next eight years Faraday worked long hours in the laboratory, which did harm to his health.By the end of the decade, he was in such poor health that his research did not begin again until 1845.
In the mid 1850s, as Faraday gradually lost the ability to take care of himself, he was forced to retire from his scientific studies. He lived at Hampton Court, which Queen Victoria offered him, until his death on 25 August 1867.

When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don't see anyone I know” or “please don't talk to me” may run through your mind. I've also said such things to myself. Sometimes, the last thing you want to do is talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on the Internet. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don't have the courage to actually do in reality.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don't actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and smile is worth a lot.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sam Watts was a 37 year old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head for the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5 pm the next day. The man to join Sam would be his crewman (船员), 24 year old Tom Buck.
Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was nothing that could keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves about 120 kilometers from land, Sam put his three kilometer long fishing line into the sea. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far to the shore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. “Get us out of here!” Tom screamed to Sam. “Let's go back!”
With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to be filled with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull the fishing line, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then drove the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.
With dawn coming, Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon (地平线). He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. “I couldn't believe it,” Sam said. “We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died.” High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. “William, William!” Sam yelled into the radio. “If you're coming to get us, come now!”
“We're coming!” William shouted back.

W:Today, I'll talk about a great artist, Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. At 15, Leonardo went to work with a famous artist. At the age of 20, he was already a master painter. Although da Vinci was a great painter, he never gave up his interest in other subjects. For example, he drew a flying machine 400 years before the airplane was invented. In all, da Vinci designed more than 1,000 inventions. As a matter of fact, da Vinci started many projects that he never finished. He was always more interested in planning projects than doing them. He often quickly lost interest in one project and couldn't wait to start another. So he completed very few paintings. Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa. Unfortunately, the man who ordered the painting didn't like it and refused to pay him. However, ten years later, da Vinci sold it to the King of France. The King hung it in the Louvre Palace in Paris.Today the Mona Lisa still hangs in the Louvre, which is now a museum.

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore, driving the men farther out into the sea. They had been drifting for hours. After what seemed a century, suddenly Sam shouted and pointed at a nearby place, “Look! There is an island!” Sam and Tom quickly jumped into the sea, which became calmer, and they managed to land on the island. They were surprised to find that there were people living on it. The people there gave them some food. The storm seemed to be over and they had a good sleep that night.
The next morning, Sam spotted a fishing boat in the distance. It belonged to the people on the island. The kind people gave the boat to Sam and Tom as a present and warned them that the storm would come back again in two days, so they must hurry up! Sam and Tom thanked them and set off. After two days' sailing, they finally reached the coast. At that time, Sam's radio rang, “I'm William! I'm in the middle of the sea. The storm is rocking my boat terribly. Help me!”
