A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world's first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable”. The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry's classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry's class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enrolling Bina48 in his “Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies” course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course “Philosophy of Love” instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn't understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple—it's a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in the future.
Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48's contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replace instructors completely.

As scientists in the Netherlands tried to figure out how to build a super flying robot, they learned from one of nature's flyers: the humble fruit fly.And by building this robot, they've gained new understanding of how the fly carries out one of its dangerous tasks.
The robot is called the DelFly Nimble. Its wingspan (翼展) is about a foot wide.It has four wings that can beat at 17 times per second, which appear very delicate because they're made of the same material as space blankets.
“In previous designs, they always had a tail, like a traditional airplane tail,”said the robot's main designer Matej Karasek. He's based at the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and he and his colleagues published their findings on Thursday in Science.
“In previous generations,” he said, “flapping wings drove the robot forward while the tail helped to guide and stabilise (稳定) it.But now the DelFly Nimble is completely controlled by the wings.”“The challenge then was actually combining the control into the wing movement, and that's what we achieved,” Karasek said.
“In the latest generation, the wings can each move individually or rotate (旋转) around the body of the robot. The robot can remain in one place in the air for about five minutes on a full battery or fly for more than a kilometre,” Karasek said, “and because the scientists are controlling all the movements, they can use the robot to learn more about how fruit flies actually carry out their dangerous tasks, which has caught the attention of biologists.”

Every year, over 7.72 trillion kilograms of plastic is washed into the oceans. There are five huge areas in the world's oceans that are a “soup” of floating rubbish. One of these areas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), is three times as large as France.
A group called Ocean Cleanup began using a huge floating screen to try to clean up plastic pollution in the ocean. After several failures, the group is now collecting plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But the plastic is spreading out over a large area, so it's impossible to collect it piece by piece. So, the Ocean Cleanup had a plan. They got a long floating U shaped tube with a screen hanging below it. As the tube and screen are pushed by the water and the winds, the U is meant to collect plastic rubbish, making it easy for a ship to collect and remove the plastic. The system uses the power of the wind and ocean, so it doesn't need fuel.
The group began testing the first version, called “System 001”. But it soon became clear that the screen was just moving with the plastic, not collecting it. Sometimes plastic would wash over the top of the tube. Even worse, System 001 got broken by surging seas and had to be towed to Hawaii for repairs.
But Mr Slat, who got the idea for the Ocean Cleanup system, sees the project as an experiment, which means a failure is a chance to learn. The team collected and studied lots of information about what worked well and what didn't. Then they changed the design and an improved version, called “System 001/B” was towed back to the GPGP.
The new version has a parachute (降落伞) attached to it. This makes the system move slightly slower than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be collected inside, as planned. But this success is still just the beginning of the work of the Ocean Cleanup. They want a better and larger system.

It was late spring when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It'll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven't received any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer by, since we had seen so few along the way.

M:Are zoos necessary, or are they only bad to the animals This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts. Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted too much and left in their native land. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild. Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modern zoos are designed very closely to the natural environment. One of their strongest arguments is that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled killing but can give babies under protection and in that way may be saved from dying out. OK, that's all from me and you're expected to express your opinions on this question next class.

My club, DreamMusic Club, whose motto is “to sing for dreams”, was formed one year ago. To realize the goal, we've been practicing every Friday night ever since and we stick to our plan. Also, every four weeks we'll hold singing competitions, and we do have fun.
Actually, as a music lover, I get a lot from running the club, which not only helps me make friends but also makes me get relaxed and hold a positive attitude towards life as well.

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
I let out a sigh while my mom rooted herself against the car worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back along the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them. While we were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked Mom to pull up and paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the pleasant scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.
