Scientists these days are worried about the sea level. It is rising mainly because warm temperatures have made glaciers(冰川) melt (融化) more quickly. Glaciers are rivers of ice, and their melting adds fresh water to the oceans. Antarctica and Greenland are together losing about 350 m3 of ice every year, and the melt-water raises the sea level about 1 mm each year.
Scientists have known for a long time that the sea level changes over time. Paul Hearty, a geologist (地质学家), has found stones that are covered in shells around 30 meters above sea level. Those shells are several million years old. They show that the sea level was once much higher.
The sea level has risen and fallen over thousands of years. During the Ice Age, the sea level was lower because more water was locked in glaciers on land. And then the sea level sometimes rose higher than it is today, as the melt-water went into the ocean.
The big challenge for scientists has been how to measure changes in sea level over the past 15 to 100 years. Bruce Douglas, a scientist, spent years working on this. During the 1980s and 1990s, he measured sea level rise by studying records from tide gauges (验潮仪). People have been depending on these tide gauges for over 200 years to watch the water level in coastal areas (沿海地区) in order to warn ships about the danger.
