Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September, 1987, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military’s Medal by the French government.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia (白血病) because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.
56. Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal?

D. Because she worked as a helper to her mother.

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
1. Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble.
2. Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.
Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
3. Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.
4. Work at any activity that builds muscles.
60. Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.
A. they can talk B. they start walking
C. they have no fear of the water D. they are five or six years old
61. The author believes that fear of water is_____.
A. stupid B. sensible C. dangerous D. not smart
62. The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.
A. butterfly B. backstroke C. breastroke D. crawl
63. According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.
A. the water is too cold B . your parents would not be happy
C. something in the water might attack D. you might drown

She was dancing. My crippled(瘸腿的)grandmother was dancing. I stood in the living room doorway, looking at her beautiful movements, absolutely shocked. She was the pet of the dancing world. And then she'd had her accident and it was all over. I had read that in an old newspaper article.
‘‘So… Your leg? I mean, how did your leg heal?”
“To tell you the truth-my legs have been well all my life,” she sighed.
“But I don't understand!” I said, “Your dancing career…You pretended all these years?”
‘‘Very much so, and for a very good reason.”
She thought for a while and then continued. “We were talking about engagement(订婚) when your grandfather had to go to war. I was so afraid of losing him that the only way I could stay normal was to dance. I put all my energy and time into practicing-and I became very good. Critics praised me, the public loved me, but all I could feel was the ache in my heart, not knowing whether the love of my life would ever return. Then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences: 'I have lost my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best you forget about me. ”
“I made my decision there and then. I traveled away from the city. When I returned I had bought myself a stick. I told everyone I had been in a car crash and that my leg would never completely heal again. My dancing days were over. No one doubted the story--I had learned to limp(一瘸一拐地走) convincingly before I returned home. And I made sure the first person to hear of my accident was a reporter I knew well. Then I traveled to the hospital. They had pushed your grandfather outside in his wheelchair. I took a deep breath, leaned on my stick and limped to him.”
“I showed him newspaper articles of my accident. There is a whole life waiting for us out there! But I am not going to carry you. You are going to walk yourself. ”
“I limped a few steps toward him and showed him what I'd taken out of my pocket. Now show me you are still a man. I said. He bent to take his stick from the ground and struggled out of that wheelchair. He managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.”
“What did you show him?” I had to know. Grandma looked at me and smiled. “Two engagement rings, of course. I had bought them the day after he left for the war and I was not going to waste them on any other man.”
68. What does the underlined word "it" in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Her accident. B. Her pet.
C. Her leg. D. Her dancing career.
69. Which is the correct order of the following events according to the passage?
① Grandfather lost his leg in the war.
② Grandmother bought two engagement rings.
③ Grandfather was inspired to stand up on his own.
④ Grandmother pretended she was crippled.
⑤ Grandmother became an excellent dancer.
⑥ Grandfather had to go to war.
A. ⑤⑥②①④③ B. ⑥⑤①③②④

Global warming is one of the major environmental problems we are facing today. Scientists think a further rise in the carbon dioxide levels will make this situation worse. The greenhouse effect causes the earth’s heat to be trapped in the atmosphere, which results in the increase in temperature. This, in turn, has an effect on various plants and animals. Global warming makes it difficult for some of them to survive.
Ozone depletion means a drop in the quantity of the ozone(臭氧) in the earth’s stratosphere (平流层). The ozone hole in the Antarctic is mainly due to the release of CFCs ( a type of gas). Because of ozone depletion, humans are facing various problems such as the harmful effects of UV rays.
Water pollution is caused when wastes are thrown into water. What’s more, many harmful chemicals are also put into water, which causes the deaths of many wild animals and endangers the health of humans.
The increasing population is causing a loss of natural resources. This is related to various human activities. For example, overfishing has caused many kinds of fishes to die out. Forests are being cleared to meet the rising demand for paper, wood, even for land. Mining, the work of getting gold, coal etc out of the earth, has led to a further drop in mineral resources. If we used up all the resources, how could our children survive on this planet?
These are some of the current environmental problems we are facing today. Only with an effort from each person, can we hope to save our planet from being destroyed.

书面表达Possible version:
Breaks between classes are intended to give students a short time to be refreshed in body and mind so that they can go on with their learning energetically and efficiently.
Students in class are usually looking forward to the break. However, they are expecting different things. Some students want to make use of that period of time hanging out with their classmates. They enjoy fun by chatting, playing games, or doing some outdoor activities. Others want to spend the break reading, doing homework, or reviewing lessons. In a word, nowadays, school breaks could be either “academic” or “physical”, which is a very interesting phenomenon.
As a high school student, I favor the “physical” way of break. I find it very hard when I have too much work to finish, though. I have to deal with my homework during the break.
I don’t deny some students are really book worms, absorbing knowledge every minute. However, I dare say the majority of us students know what we really want and what we really need to do. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We are struggling for a balance between work and play.
