I had passed the higher secondary examination when I had to give up further studies. I had to be earning something to help the family budget. One day a letter came to me from an office for an interview. I was both happy and nervous; I was the only teen.
On that particular morning, I got ready. I put on the best clothes. They didn't catch people's eye, but they were clean and suitable. I took particular care to clean and polish my pair of shoes. Knowing the difficulties of transport, I started with plenty of time on hand.
I reached the office before the appointed time. When my turn came, I was trembling, I think, but I went quietly and entered closing the door carefully behind me. The manager asked me to be seated. He asked me why I was giving up my studies and remarked that I seemed to be too young for the job. I said that I was willing to learn and to work as hard as possible. “Have you any other plans ” he asked me. I said that if I got the job, I would improve my qualifications by joining an evening class. “Young man”, he said, “If we do select you, you will have to work right from the bottom and work your way up depending on your performance. ” I replied that I was young without experience and I couldn't expect anything better. But if I failed, it would not be due to any lack of willingness on my part.
It was my first interview, and I know it would not be the last. So I was not very much excited. On the contrary, I felt easy that I had gone through it and got some experience.
I used to fancy myself a pretty good vacationer. But on my family's recent week-long trip to Mexico our first real getaway since the pandemic began—I got mixed up.
The huge difference between the expectations and the realities of travel hit me a few hours after we landed in Cabo SanLucas, Mexico. Driving our rental car to Walmart to buy groceries, we found ourselves stuck in stand-still traffic for over two hours. I comforted myself with the thought that once we arrived, my vacation self would emerge: relaxed, flexible and ready for a surfing followed by a margarita(玛格丽塔酒) on the beach—while wearing one of several sundresses that had been gathering dust in my closet since 2020.
Readers, I did not.
First, I was defeated by what I will well refer to as “traveler's stomach.” Then, I was scared out of surfing by waves that seemed too messy and powerful for my skills. A chilly fog kept me from unrolling the sundresses I'd carefully packed, and I ended up wrapped in the same sweat-shirt that I wore on the airplane. All seemed ruined.
During the episode, I nearly drove myself crazy by asking constantly, “How can I make this better' Can I find a different route in the traffic ” But it was just about acceptance: getting into the moment, accepting what it is, and trusting—trusting this may not be the best moment of the vacation, but there can still be good moments of the vacation.
Indeed, I noticed a shift in my mood. At some stage I did drink a margarita. Eventually, I had an enjoyable afternoon of surfing in the sun. But when I fondly remember this vacation now, I more often return to curling up on the hotel couch with my husband, watching “Stranger Things” in sweats; or sitting sand-caked on the beach watching our daughter digging with a local girl. In those small moments, I was simply present. That's what vacation is all about.
4. How did the author feel on her way to Walmart
A. Relaxed and expectant. B. Upset but hopeful.
C. Disappointed and defeated. D. Delighted but concerned.
5. What prevented the author from wearing the sundress
A. Sharp stomachache. B. Huge waves.
C. Cold weather. D. Favored sweat-shirts.
6. What can we learn about the author as the vacation went on
A. She preferred to stay in the hotel.
B. She sought for better enjoyments.
C. She achieved the goals as scheduled.
D. She embraced the imperfect moments.
7. What is the purpose of the text
A. To share reflections on a trip.
B. To provide advice on a getaway.
C. To promote tourism in Mexico.
D. To inform challenges of a vacation.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A

根据第二段中“Driving our rental car to Walmart to buy groceries, we found ourselves stuck in stand-still traffic for over two hours. I comforted myself with the thought that once we arrived, my vacation self would emerge: relaxed, flexible and ready for a surfing followed by a margarita(玛格丽塔酒) on the beach(我们开着租来的车去沃尔玛买食品杂货,发现自己被堵住了两个多小时。我安慰自己,以为一旦我们到达,我的假期就会自己浮现出来:放松、灵活,准备好冲浪,然后在海滩上喝一杯玛格丽塔酒)”可知,作者因为堵车心情沮丧,但同时对于即将到来的假期充满了希望,故选择B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“A chilly fog kept me from unrolling the sundresses I'd carefully packed, and I ended up wrapped in the same sweat-shirt that I wore on the airplane.(寒冷的雾气使我无法展开我精心打包的背心裙,最后我穿着和在飞机上穿的一样的汗衫。)”

结合全文以及文章的第一段“I used to fancy myself a pretty good vacationer. But on my family's recent week-long trip to Mexico our first real getaway since the pandemic began—I got mixed up.(我以前以为自己是个很好的度假者。但在我的家人最近为期一周的墨西哥之行中,这是疫情爆发以来我们第一次真正的度假——我被搞糊涂了。)”可知,本文的主要目的在于分享自己在疫情爆发后的一次旅行中的感想,故选择A项。
3.(2023届浙江省杭州第二中学新高三上学期适应性测试英语试题)
I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
4.Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden
A.To protect the injured skull. B.To prevent herself from sunburn.
C.To avoid being hit by the nuts. D.To reduce the chance of getting bitten by bees.
5.What is the tree’s survival strategy
A.It attracts beneficial pollinators.
B.It lets out poison to drive away pests.
C.It produces a chemical fatal to some plants.
D.It competes for nutrition with similar species.
6.Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree
A.The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.
B.The tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.
C.The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.
D.The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.
7.The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.
A.it’s better to give than to take
B.trees and plants have their own ways to flourish
C.even a good relationship is not always trouble-free
D.acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be
根据第二段“falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. (掉落的果实会和棒球一样坚硬,可能伤到你、孩子、邻居和那些住在隔壁的人的脑袋。)”可知,作者在果园里劳动时,会佩戴一个自行车头盔,是为了保护头部不会被树上掉落的坚硬果实砸伤,故选C项。
5.细节理解题。根据第三段“The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. (作为一种竞争策略,黑胡桃也会通过根部释放一种化学物质。它对几种常见的植物来说是有毒性的。)”可知,黑胡桃树的生存策略就是释放一种对其他一些常见植物物种有毒的物质,以独占生存资源。故选C项。
6.细节理解题。根据第四段“Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress. (这个地区的原生植物通常很容易生长,所以它们承受的压力较小。)”可知,在这个果园中,黑胡桃树在与当地原生植物的生存竞争中并未占据优势,原生植物长势繁荣,这并非是作者对黑胡桃树又爱又恨的原因之一。故选B项。
7.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. (我有没有想过摆脱这个小小的后院的大麻烦吗?是的,然而,要摆脱这棵50英尺高、树干只有87英寸的树几乎是不可能的。)”和最后一段“I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. (我就与这棵树相伴,所以我会倾听它的需求,给它所需的空间。)”可知,作者从这棵树身上得到了这样启示:包容接纳,而非抗拒,会让生活更美好。故选D项。
4.(浙江省嘉兴市第一中学2022-2023学年高三上学期期中检测)
I grew up in a home with a mother who believes that vaccines cause brain damage, and do not contribute to the health and safety of a society. The only shot I received was for tetanus (破伤风) when I was two months old. After that, nothing.
At the beginning of each school year, I was very anxious. Delayed term paper Mischievous (捣蛋的) behaviour Late for school None of them. I’d be pulled out of class and brought to the headmaster’s office. The school doctor would tell me I haven’t received any of the necessary shots to attend school. But the same thing occurred each time: my mom would exempt (免除) me from the shots and nothing would happen.
After doing a lot of research, I found although people who don’t vaccinate their children make up only a relatively small group, they can cause major consequences. People who, for health or age reasons, cannot receive vaccines are at a higher risk of catching a preventable disease.
Eventually, I turned 18. In Ohio, where I live, I had to wait until I became a legal adult to make the decision to receive vaccine shots. A huge factor in taking the step to ensure my health was the message board website Reddit. Last year, I asked Reddit users for advice about what vaccines to ask for and how to go about getting them from a doctor. After my post received more than 1,000 comments, I made an appointment with my family physician. Despite how strongly my mother felt, I went through with it anyway.
I did something every person should do. It wasn’t special in any way. Vaccines protect the health and safety of not only yourself but also other people. Vaccination is important because someone could die if you don’t get vaccinated. This was the biggest reason I got vaccinated despite the opposition.
24.What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1
A.He was born disabled. B.He suffered from tetanus.
C.He was hardly vaccinated. D.He was spoiled by his mother.
25.Why did the author feel nervous at the beginning of each school year
A.Because he would never behave himself.
B.Because he couldn’t go to school on time.
C.Because he often forgot to do his term paper.
D.Because he would be called to meet headmaster.
26.How might the author’s mother have felt about his appointment with the family physician
A.Grateful B.Annoyed C.Excited D.Guilty
27.What message does the author try to convey through his story
A.Obeying the old pays off. B.Keeping fit is the best policy.
C.Doing the right thing matters. D.Following advice is beneficial.
根据第一段的“The only shot I received was for tetanus (破伤风) when I was two months old. After that, nothing.(我只有两个月大的时候注射过破伤风疫苗。在那之后,什么都没有)”和第二段中“The school doctor would tell me I hadn’t received any of the necessary shots to attend school.(学校的医生会告诉我,我没有接受过任何必要的上学必须要进行的接种)”可知,作者几乎从来没有接种过疫苗。故选C。
根据第二段中“At the beginning of each school year, I was very nervous. Delayed term paper Mischievous behavior Late for school None of them. I’d be pulled out of class and brought to the headmaster’s office.(每学年开始的时候,我都很紧张。迟交了学期论文吗?淘气的行为?上学迟到吗?一个都不是。我会被拉出教室,带到校长办公室)”可知,作者将被叫到校长办公室,让作者在每学年开始时感到紧张。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Despite how strongly my mother felt, I went through with it anyway.(不管我妈妈强烈反对,我还是坚持了下来)”可推知,妈妈对于作者与家庭医生的约会感动恼怒。故选B。
根据最后一段中“I did something every person should do.(我做了每个人都应该做的事情)”和下文“Vaccines protect the health and safety of not only yourself but also other people. Vaccination is important because someone could die if you don’t get vaccinated.(疫苗不仅保护你自己的健康和安全,也保护其他人的健康和安全。接种疫苗很重要,因为如果你不接种,有人可能会死)”可推断,作者通过他的经历告诉我们做正确的事情,对己对人都有好处。故选C。
5.(浙江衢州二中2022届高三英语第一次模拟考试)
Many years ago when I first started to play tennis I was so crazy about the sport that I traveled to all four of the major grand slams–Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open and the U.S.Open in New York City.I was so very impressed with the great champion Arthur Ashe and so admired him, not only as the number one tennis player in the world for a time but just as much for how dedicated he was to improving the lives of everyone, especially the unfortunate of the world. To me, he was an incredible double champion!
I will never forget, as long as I live, that night when the last match at the U.S.Open in New York finished very late. As I walked out of the stadium to catch a cab, I was surprised to see there were only a few cabs left and tons of people heading toward them. So being quite young I sprinted to try to catch one. I barely made it to the last taxi, but as I opened the back door and jumped in, someone else was doing the same thing on the other side. As both doors slammed shut I looked over to see none other than Arthur Ashe as my seat mate! We quickly agreed to share the ride since we were both heading for mid-town Manhattan. On the ride there I picked his brains to get all the tennis and life coaching I could possible pull out of him in that 45 minutes’ ride.
What a great experience that had been and what a great man he was. He was so much more than a world champion tennis player. From a young age growing up in a segregated(种族隔离的)society, he set about to help change the world by helping people and thus making the world a better place for all of us.
When we are young, most of us are pretty self-centered and almost everything we do is directed at just helping ourselves. But as we grow older and a little wiser, we see that helping others is not only very satisfying but it can make the world a better place for everyone for many years to come.
1. What did the author mean by saying Arthur Ashe was a double champion
A. He won two championships as a tennis player.
B. He helped promote the tennis sport in the world.
C. He helped many people apart from his achievements in sports.
D. He was a successful political leader as well as a tennis player.
2. What do we learn from the ride-sharing experience
A. They didn’t talk much during the ride.
B. They agreed to do more for young people.
C. The author learned many life lessons.
D. Arthur Ashe gave some gifts to the author.
3. What did the author want to tell us in the story
A. Two heads are better than one.
B. Action speaks louder than words.
C. One good turn deserves another.
D. Selflessness is a mark of an honorable man.
根据第一段“I was so very impressed with the great champion Arthur Ashe and so admired him, not only as the number one tennis player in the world for a time but just as much for how dedicated he was to improving the lives of everyone, especially the unfortunate of the world.(伟大的网球冠军阿瑟·阿什给我留下了深刻的印象,我非常钦佩他,不仅因为他曾一度是世界头号网球选手,而且因为他致力于改善每个人的生活,尤其是世界上不幸的人的生活)”可知,Arthur Ashe不仅是一位网球冠军,也热心帮助他人,特别是黑人社区,因此对于作者而言,他就是一位“双料冠军”。
根据文中“On the ride there I picked his brains to get all the tennis and life coaching I could possible pull out of him in that 45 minutes’ ride(在去那里的路上,我向他请教了45分钟的网球和生活指导)”可知,作者从拼车经验中学到了很多人生经验。
根据文章的主要内容,并结合最后一段“When we are young, most of us are pretty self-centered and almost everything we do is directed at just helping ourselves. But as we grow older and a little wiser, we see that helping others is not only very satisfying but it can make the world a better place for everyone for many years to come.(当我们年轻的时候,我们大多数人都是以自我为中心的,我们所做的几乎每件事都是为了帮助自己。但是,随着我们年龄和智慧的增长,我们看到帮助他人不仅是非常令人满意的,而且可以让世界在未来的许多年里变得更美好)”可知,文章讲述了世界冠军阿瑟·阿什的乐于助人的优良品质,这篇文章的主题就是凸显Arthur Ashe伟大的人格。所以作者通过这个故事要告诉我们“Selflessness is a mark of an honorable man. (无私是高尚人的标志)”这样的道理。故选D。01 阅读理解 记叙文--新题速递 浙江省2022-2023学年名校试卷分类汇编
