As the effects of climate change set in, coastal cites such as the Italian city of Venice and the American city
of New Orlean are slowly sinking. So is Bangkok. Officials in the city and scientists say they do not know how
long people will be able to continue living in the Thai capital.
Thailand’s military rulers are considering action. The National Reform Council wants the government to
form a committee to deal with the warnings that Bangkok could be permanently underwater many years from
now.
The Saen canal was built in Bangkok in the late 1830s. In a neighborhood near the waterway, walkways are
breaking up. Walls on homes, small businesses and an Islamic center appear to be bending. The area is sinking
about two centimeters a year, which is two times the average rate for the rest of Bangkok.
“I don’t know what to do.” says Vijitri Puangsiri who has lived in the neighborhood for 44 years. Her home
needs to be repaired every year because of the sinking ground. The walkway in front of her century-old house
where she operates a small restaurant must also be repeatedly repaired.
“If you travel on the canal boats, you can see how this is all hollow,” Somsak Kongeeng says, “The buildings
to see him are sinking because they were not built on solid foundations,” He joked that if we come back to
see him again in 20 years, the water level will be almost as high as his head. But he is also partly serious. That
might be only a small overstatement in a city that is, on average, just two meters above sea level.
Observers say two reasons for the sinking are a rising sea level and too much pumping of groundwater.
Another reason, they say, is the decision by developers to build so many high-rises because they earn quantities of
money by doing so. This kind of development worries those who are concerned with the rising water level.
4.What do we know from the passage
A.Vijitri Puangsiri’s home needs repairing owing to the broken walkway.
B.The Saen canal was a supporting evidence of the sinking ground.
C.Somsak Kongeeng simply treats the sinking as a joke.
D.Bangkok is not suitable for people to live in any more.
5.To slow down the sinking of the city in a practical way, we suggest ________.
A.replacing the loose soil with concrete B.controlling pumping groundwater
C.forbidding the construction of high-rises D.stopping the rising of sea level
6.What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage
A.To appeal to protect the city of Bangkok. B.To explain the reasons for the sinking
C.To stress the significance of Bangkok. D.To inform us of the situation of Bangkok.
7.What is the best title of this passage
A.The Saen Canal — Cause of the Sinking B.A Warning from Bangkok
C.Bangkok — a Coastal City at Risk D.Reasons for Sinking Building

Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for two of the country’s persistent problems: garbage
and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking
a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn
them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where
Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them
open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use liners (活衬里) from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on
whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and
portable,” Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and it created 110
sleeping bags last December.
Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita
— whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago to live a better life — and her fellow
volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of saving bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them
to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty are often closely related.
As Oleita told : “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
8.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The final goal of Chip Bag Project. B.The basic rules of Chip Bag Project.
C.The main work of Chip Bag Project. D.The significance of Chip Bag Project.
9.What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project
A.It is only made of old coats. B.It is easy to carry around.
C.It has the function of heating. D.It is the same size as 150 bags.
10.Which of the following statements does Oleita probably agree with
A.Making sleeping bags is easier than buying new ones.
B.Poverty and environmental problems go hand in hand.
C.Making sleeping bags is the best way to help the homeless.
D.Environmental problems have little impact on the homeless.
11.Which of the following best describes Oleita
A.Caring and creative. B.Brave and optimistic.
C.Honest and determined. D.Talented and easy-going
D
When you picture a farm, do you think of green fields and a big red barn The farms of the future may look
very different from that. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be
above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was unused for
almost 70 years before it was turned into the world’s first underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an
ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的 ) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor
spaces.
Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic
technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows
for the perfect pest-free (无害虫的) growing environment.
These methods save 70 percent less water than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept
within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or
growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs
allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under
different light spectrums (光谱).”
Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast
enough to be economically (经济地) feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve,
you’ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four
hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they hope to be
entering the local retail markets soon.
12.What makes the underground farm possible
A.The perfect environment. B.The great demand for fruits.
C.The hydroponic technology. D.The good weather condition.
13.What is the function of the LED lighting system
A.To get rid of pests. B.To make use of solar energy.
C.To allow greens to grow rapidly. D.To provide various light spectrums.
14.What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Difficult. B.Common. C.Impossible. D.Achievable.
15.What does the company expect of the underground farm
A.It’ll benefit more customers. B.It’ll be environment-friendly.
C.It’ll keep food fresher for longer. D.It’ll introduce more advanced technologies.

Surviving Mount Rainier
Bad luck and poor timing left Kart and three climbers stuck on Mount Rainier for several long days. They
faced mountain climbing’s toughest tests. One man suffered altitude sickness; ice and rockfall rained down at
night; cold nights in a tent that got torn left them hypothermic(体温过低的). Calm confidence, skill and the
courage to continue up the route, despite illness and injury, likely saved their lives.
The climbers set out on a Friday, camping low on the route the first night because they were concerned about
rockfall after a climber had recently died in an accident at the route’s typical high camp. On Saturday, at about
10,500 feet, one of the climbers became sick from the altitude, which began to slow them down. They needed to
keep moving, so they put him in the lead so he could move at a pace he was comfortable with.
By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow.
They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during
the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around
the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a cold
night.

46.Dear Mike,
I’m afraid I cannot go to the botanical garden with you on Saturday morning. Now I’m writing to apologize
to you.
The reason why I am not available is that “Opera on campus” will be held in our school on Saturday, when
some local operas will be put on in the art center. Since I am interested in the traditional Chinese culture, I think
this is a great chance for me to learn more about Chinese opera. If you are interested, you can join me. I suggest
we go to the botanical garden next weekend. Would it be convenient for you
I hope you can forgive me. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

47.One possible version:
On Monday, they managed to call 911 but forgot to ask how to communicate with the rangers (护林员 )
before losing signal. They set up what was left of the tent as best they could and stayed where they were, praying
for the early arrival of their salvation. But for several days, they watched beyond all hope as high winds prevented
the rangers’ attempts at a helicopter rescue. Their food was running out and they shared a single bottle of snow
melt each day. Then an icefall buried their tent platform and squeezed them together. It was impossible to climb
down.
On Wednesday, they gathered everything and decided to carry on with their climb. They climbed up slowly
and carefully, resting when they were weak. It didn’t take long until the wind froze them in place. That was the
scariest moment. Their spirits began to sink and they started to doubt if they could continue. Kart thought of all
the people who loved him, and it really hit him they must be worried. As he tried to climb again and again, he just
kept yelling out to his friends, “We have to get there.”However, as they got onto the final slope to the summit, the
weather cleared. Suddenly, a helicopter appeared out of nowhere. They were rescued.
①期盼:pray for/expect/hope for
②尽最大努力做某事:try to do/spare no effort to do
③大声喊:yell out /shout out/speak in a loud voice
