Robert Jarvik, born on May 1l, 1946 in Michigan and raised in Stamford, is a medical scientist and researcher, who played an important role in the invention of the artificial heart. He was interested in medicine from a young age. He watched his father perform operations and gained a patent(专利权)for a machine applied in the medical operation before he graduated from high school.
Jarvik attended Syracuse University and considered a career in art. When his father developed heart disease suddenly, he decided then to work on a medical career. He applied to medical schools, but was not admitted to any schools in the US. Before long, he was admitted to the medical school in Italy and stayed there for two years. He returned to get a degree in medicine from New York University in 1971.
After working for a period of time, Jarvik got a job in the organ transplant(器官移植)program at the University of Utah in 1972. He worked with the director of the program, Willem Kolff, who invented the kidney dialysis(肾透析)machine.
By the time Jarvik came to the University of Utah, the organ program had already developed the primary artificial heart. He improved it by creating a diaphragm(横膈膜), which solved many issues with the heart. Eventually, he created the first artificial heart in 1981, the Jarvik-7, to be placed in a human patient, which was considered one of the most important inventions in human history.
Barney Clark, a retired dentist suffering from serious heart disease, received the Jarvik-7 transplant on December 2, 1982. He lived for 112 days after the operation, but the transplant was considered a success. Though receiving criticism for the risk referred to transplant an artificial heart, the Jarvik-7 still became very important for patients who were waiting for a heart. In 1987, Jarvik moved to New York City and formed Jarvik Research Inc. He began developing a new heart—the Jarvik 2000. This smaller machine fits inside a patient's heart rather than replacing the entire organ.

Have you ever wondered why certain pop songs just make you feel so good Researchers studying the question found that uncertainty and surprise give listeners the most pleasure. The study included 80, 000 chords(和弦)in 745 pop songs between 1958 and 1991.
Each song was stripped of its melody(旋律)and lyrics(歌词)so that only chords were left and the results couldn't be misunderstood by other imaginations of the songs that listeners might have had.
They found two things. Listeners got great pleasure from unexpected chords when they knew what would happen. However, they still found it pleasant to hear familiar chords when they did not know what would follow.
Vincent Cheung, the lead researcher, said, "Pleasant songs are likely those which keep a good balance(平衡)between knowing what is going to happen next and surprising us with something we did not expect. Understanding how music starts our pleasure system in the brain could explain why listening to music might help us feel better when we are feeling blue. "
Cheung told CNN that pleasure in music is connected to expectation. The study before had looked into the effects of surprise on pleasure, but his team's study also paid attention to the uncertainty of listeners' expectations.

A new phone app uses shaking from smartphones to warn people about earthquakes. The new app is called MyShake, which is the work of four researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.
Smartphones are equipped with accelerometers(加 速 器). MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic(地震的)activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smartphone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive several warnings from one area it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then judges the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record 5. 0 earthquakes at distances of 10 kilometers or less.
MyShake uses very little power according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network. The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface like a table.
The developers hope that MyShake can add to information collected by the US Geological Survey. That US agency has created the Earthquake Early Warning System also known as the EEW. The EEW has used sensors for measuring quakes in many areas. In places where no such equipment exists MyShake may be the only method of early quake detection(发现). The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.
The developers say they hope to add a feature that will warn people about a possible tsunami(海啸)after an earthquake.
32. What's the main idea of the first two paragraphs
A. What seismic activity is.
B. What MyShake is and how it works.
C. When accelerometers record earthquakes.

B. The smart phone can warn its owner when it senses an earthquake.
C. MyShake can quickly send seismic information to the app's developers.
D. MyShake can sense the difference between normal activities and earthquakes every time.
34. What probably will the app developers hope to do next
A. To better the EEW.
B. To combine the EEW and MyShake.
C. To add its function to warn the possible damage after an earthquake.
D. To use the information by the U. S. Geological Survey to better MyShake
35. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage

A shark at tacked a 14-year-old girl near a Florida beach on Saturday, though a surfer tried to save her. The surfer pulled the girl from bloody water and frightened the shark away with his fists (拳头).
Can sharks really smell blood in the water Yes. Sharks have a good sense of smell, and blood happens to be a very attractive smell. Sharks also use sight and hearing to discover their food. In particular, hungry sharks like to hear the sounds which are made by swimming fish. They also look for something bright. Attacks on people can sometimes be a case of mistaken recognition. Sometimes, a shark could confuse shining stones for food.
The sharks* eyes. ears, and nose are all near their mouth. But sharks also search for their food with sensory receptors (感受器). These receptors can feel any movement in the water. When a shark gets very close to a food, it can use electro receptive organs (电觉器官), which sit the wall of little holes on the shark's nose. Living things in salty seawater produce a weak electrical field (电磁场)that the shark can feel at a short distance, so it allows the shark to find out creatures that bury themselves in the sea floor. Muscle (肌肉)movements also produce little electrical fields that a shark can feel.
The surfer who tried to save the girl said he protected himself by frightening away the shark with his fists. Is that a good idea Some experts think frightening away a shark with fists should only be the last choice. It won't be wise for you to stay still in water. Swimming away rapidly seems to be a better choice. If you can't swim away right away, hit the shark on the face or nose—where it has a high concentration of sensory receptors like humans—to drive off your attacker and give you enough time to escape. When you are beside a shark's face, try sticking your finger in its eyes.

D. Sharks can't find and attack creatures hiding in the sea floor.

As more Europeans arrived in America 500 years ago, they were in such great need of the land that they and the Native American Indians battled constantly. By the end of the 19th century, most Indian tribes (部落) were moved to reservations. A lot of their children were taken away to boarding schools to learn to speak English. By the end of the 20th century, more than half of the Native Americans in the US were living in the cities. They gave up speaking their old tribal language and only used English. As a result, many Native American languages disappeared and with that their culture.
Today some American Indian languages are usually spoken by the older members of the tribes who still live on the reservations. In North America there are 150-170 languages that have at least one speaker. One ancient language spoken by the Northern Paiute tribe has over 100 speakers.
But the good news is that some of these people are keeping their culture and language alive. They are also receiving help from the National Geographic Society’s Enduring Voices project, whose aim is to help languages around the world which are dying out. The team meets these “last speakers”. The experts interview them and they are recorded with video, pictures and so on. They also tell old stories which are written down in English so people can learn more about the cultures.
Recording the language and culture is only part of the project. The next stage is to pass on the language to the next generation. The Salish tribe is an excellent example of how schools can help. The tribe lives on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. Their language is spoken by about 50 people aged over 75. So now, the local people have set up a school. It has 30 students aged two to twelve during the day and there are also courses for adults in the evening.

Rene Pierron, 51, a street cleaner at Paris City Hall, was not lucky, and said it was difficult to work outdoors under such conditions. “The buildings and roads here take the heat in during the day and act like radiators (散热器) — it's unbearable,” he said while taking a break near the Avenue des Champs-Elysees.

When British musician Paul Barton performs in Lopburi lately, his energetic listeners react wildly. Some pull his hair or jump on his piano. Others steal his music. These behaviors are normal; however, these crowds are truly wild—wild monkeys to be exact, who are Barton’s latest animal fans. Past wildlife audiences included elephants and deer living in special protected areas. He also once played to cows to please them to get more milk.
Barton plays often to the animals in Lopburi, an area known for wild macaque monkeys. The pianist hopes the music shows bring calmness to the animals, which often suffer hunger during the hard time and become aggressive(好斗的).The limited tourism means fewer people come to see the monkeys and feed them.“On the one hand, we need to make an effort to make sure that they eat correctly. On the other hand, we should try to calm these wild animals down,” said Barton, 59, a Thailand man.
Barton has played at four places in Lopburi, including an ancient Hindu temple, a store and an old movie theater. The animals quickly surround Barton when he plays music. Some of the creatures sit on his chair, while others climb up his body and touch his head. However, Barton keeps his attention on his performance, even when some animals run over his hands on the instrument and other animals take control of his music papers. Barton is happy to find they are curious about him and the piano and enjoy the music as he is playing it.

There are many idioms or sayings in English that we use when we want to describe relationships between and among friends. Here are a few to practice with your friends.
The idiom “through thick and thin” is used to describe a friend who is loyal and supportive during bad times as well as good times. It most often describes a friendship that has been strong for a long time. Here are two examples: John and Lisa have been friends through thick and thin. My best friend and I stayed together through thick and thin.
If two people are “like two peas(豌豆) in a pod”, it means that they get along very well. They are two very good friends and they are very similar to each other. I have never seen Lola and Camille argue; they are like two peas in a pod.
Some friends are especially sympathetic and easy to talk to. They are not judgmental or impatient. They are good at sharing our pain, which helps ease our pain. A friend like this is often called “a shoulder to cry on”.We can go to this person with a problem or sadness and they bring comfort to us.
“To hit it off” with someone means to immediately like or get along with someone. This usually happens the first time two people are meeting. They often share interests, goals, and beliefs. This can happen between friends who like each other at first sight. Carmen and Isabel hit it off at the party and are going to a movie together today. Mike and I did not hit it off on our first date but we are going to try once more.

In a small house in Belgrade, a teenage girl is drying her hair, while two others eat nearby. Several boys are having their temperature tested at the door. It is another busy day for Svratiste, which is Belgrade’s first center for children who live on the streets. For years, the building has provided warmth and shelter for the city’s most ignored children.
Since opening in 2007, Svratiste has welcomed hundreds of children, some as young as five years old. They come here to warm up, wash or eat. The kids that come to the center are all aged 5 to 15. What’s common for all of them is that they work in the street and live in extreme poverty. Also very few ever go to school.
Svratiste’s team of 13 social workers, psychologists and other experts have welcomed more than 1,400 children over the years. Money for the group’s operations comes from donations. Some people regularly bring in clothes and other aid. The group recently set up another center in a new part of town. Usually, the two centers are open every day. But both were sealed off because of restrictions when the COVID-19 pandemic(新型冠状病毒疫情)started in March. When Belgrade reopened in May, most of the children came back.
The Svratiste team has tried to help the children get to know their city by visiting playgrounds and theaters. An important effort has been to include them in the education system and make sure they stay. Bosko Markovic, now 18, first came to Svratiste five years ago. It can be really hard to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.
At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. Therefore you can work out some words with your knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this did not work well. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter first and at the end of that chapter, highlight the new words and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before using a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can understand merely from the context. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.
If you can find a translation of the books you have read as a child, I would strongly advise reading those if you are a complete beginner. However, if you feel a bit more confident reading in English, I would personally recommend the series of ‘Harry Potter’ books by J. K. Rowling or any of the Roald Dahl children's books.

The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City(《我在故宫修文物》)does not just focus on the stories of the past. Instead, the documentary film, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16,focuses on ordinary people—the restorers(做修复工作的人)of relics and antiquities(古董).
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
"If you choose this job,you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet," says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship(工艺)in the restorers. "Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit," China Daily commented. "looking for precision and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance (忍耐力),loneliness. All these qualities come from the‘ craftsman spirit’. "
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this a narrator says, "The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty."
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved many people’ s ideas about antique restorers wrong, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
28. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City
A. To show people how antiques are restored.
B. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers’ lives.
C. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
29. According to Wang Jin, we can learn that _____ .
A. he often gets tired of his work
B. here is no need to do restoration work fast
C. antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful
D. it takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
30. The underlined word “humdrum” probably means________.
A. unusual B. different C. relaxing D. boring
31. The bicycle-riding scene in the documentary is used to _____ .
A. break the old, dull image of antique restorers
B. show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C. encourage the young consider a career in antique restoration in the future

What an athlete eats before, during and after exercise is important for comfort and performance during exercise. While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide what is needed for the activity, it can prevent hunger during exercise. What is needed for muscles is stored in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.
Exercising on a full stomach is not a good idea. Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.
If you have an early morning race or exercise, it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal. If not, you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20-30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat. You can have a liquid (液体) meal closer to your event than a solid (固体) meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.
Because glucose (葡萄糖) is the energy source for most exercise, a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.
Planning is necessary if you are competing in an all-day event, such as track meets or other tournaments. You should plan ahead and prepare meals and snacks that you have tried before. Do not experiment with something new on the event day.
32. To prepare for the next exercise, you should ________.
A. eat soon before exercise B. eat during exercise
C. eat after exercise D. eat nothing at all
33. Fully digesting a meal before an event may ________.
A. cause stomach upset
B. give enough energy and stomach discomfort
C. give comfort and good performance during exercise
D. lead to hunger during exercise
34. What can we learn from the passage
A. You’d better have your pre-exercise meal after an early morning race.
B. Fruit and bread are high in glucose and easy to digest.
C. Planning is not necessary for track meets.
D. You can try something new for your meals on the event day.
35. What is the passage mainly talking about
A. Tips mainly for eating before exercise. B. What to eat during exercise.
C. Fully digesting a meal before exercise. D. Planning for your exercise.
