It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. It was too hot for people to do anything outside. And it was also scorching(烤焦)in our apartment. This was 1962, and I did not live in a place with an air conditioner(空调) for another ten years. My brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we go to see a movie.
Movie theaters were one of the few places where you could sit all day and - most importantly enjoy cool air produced by the air conditioner. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the boss of our local theater, Mr. Bellow, did not mind if you did that.
That day my brother and I sat through two movies twice, trying to stay away from the heat. We sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We'd already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr.Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.
We left the theater around 8. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally on the fourth day, the heat wave(热浪) broke.
Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite(背诵)half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart's dialogs from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962.

Is there a connection between music and language According to recent studies, the answer is yes:(1)Here, we look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. (2)The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
(3) Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦乐团).When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus(专注)on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses or other information normally. However, they can still sing. (4)Why does this work Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged(损坏的)parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
Music improves concentration(注意力) memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. (5)Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.
A. It can even help sick people get better. B.In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. C.Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. D.Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. E. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.

How important is music Many people stick(1) the opinion - listening to music is nice but it isn’t very important. It is often only considered to be entertainment(娱乐)and a way to relax,(2) not the first choice for education. I think such an opinion is wrong. In fact, music education is much (3)__(necessary) than people usually think. Here are some reasons.
Music tells us who we are. Music(4) (reflect) the musicians’ thoughts and ideas, and the social environment they come from. For example just as Mozart's music stands for a lifestyle, rock music stands for a lifestyle as well. George Gersh win's music is another example. He introduced jazz style into his music.
Music provides a kind of ability (5)_ (know) the world in a different way. Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music explores emotional(情绪的)meanings, such as (6)__(sad) and happiness. People need every possible way to learn about our world.
Music shows people's thoughts. Music is a special kind of language that can help us(7)/ k'spres/ our feelings, discoveries, ideas and hopes. All of these can (8)__(share) with others. When we don't let our children receive a good music education, it is (9)_____ pity that we take them away from the meanings that music expresses. As a result, our children are lacking in(缺乏)a(10) (wonder) part in their lives. So music education is necessary for all students.
