I was 8 years old then. I had little need of luggage. But something about my grandma’s old leather suitcase, which had been there beneath my bed, appealed to my imagination. The cracked handle felt firm in my grip and made me feel like I was going to places. But I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.
It was a fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist dampened the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted (冷落) me somehow, though now I have no idea what sparked my anger. I wanted to make her pay. I decided to run away.
“Goodbye, Mom.” I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase firmly in hand. “Goodbye, Mom,” I repeated twice more. At last, Mom emerged, wiping her hands on a dish towel. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it. “I’m leaving home,” I said. The plan was to let her suffer guilt and beg for a minute or two, and then I would agree to stay.
“Did you pack lunch ” Mom’s question knocked me off balance. “I said I’m leaving. I'm running away. For Ever!” I said. Instead, she smiled. “Well, would you like me to fix you something I just made chocolate chip cookies.” “Maybe a cookie.” I hesitated. “All right, I’m off.” As I stepped onto the front walk, fresh-baked chocolate chip tucked in my coat pocket, I looked back at our big yellow house.
Surely, she would follow me. I stared at the front door, waiting for it to fling open. I watched the lace curtains in the living room window for movement. But, no! Not even a flicker of a curtain! My mother didn’t care if I ran away. Had she ever loved me at all

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick, and they had no money left. They were moving to a smaller house because they could not afford to stay in the present house after paying the doctor's bills. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and there was no one to loan them the money.
When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, 'Only a miracle can save him now' , the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.
Clutching the precious piggy bank tightly, she came to the local drugstore. She took a quarter from her bank and placed it on the glass counter.
“And what do you want ” asked the pharmacist. “It's for my little brother,” the girl answered back. “He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle. ”
“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost ”
“We don't sell miracles here, child. I'm sorry,” the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl.
“Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”
In the shop, a well-dressed customer, asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need "That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro - surgery.
“I don't know," she replied with her eyes welling up, "he's really sick and my daddy can't pay for an operation, so I have brought my savings.”
“How much do you have " asked the man. “One dollar and eleven cents, but I can try and get some more," she answered bitterly.

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house, when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire! " He went to investigate. That's when he heard two women and a girl screaming for help on their porch (门廊).
“The baby's in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, immediately ran inside. "The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell's three youngest kids, then 8,10 and 12.The other two on the porch were Tiara's aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like running into a bucket of black paint. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who had a lung disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he went outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara " he asked desperately. “The second floor, " one voice shouted back. Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar structure to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath. 注意:

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently divorced(离婚), I was in my 20s, had no job and was on my way downtown to the employment offices. I had no umbrella, and I could not afford one. I sat down in the streetcar and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.
I examined the handle and saw a name. The usual procedure would have been to turn in the umbrella to the conductor, but somehow I decided to take it with me and find the owner myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.
Yes, she said in surprise, that was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present. But, she added, it had been stolen more than a year before. She was so excited and I was so happy that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, her eyes filled with tears. We talked for a while, and I must have given her my address. I didn’t remember.
The next six months were tough. My last job ended the day before Christmas and my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had only fifteen dollars. When I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment, the air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment. But there should be no Christmas for me. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless, jobless.
Peggy, my daughter, had proudly set our kitchen table for our evening meal and put out pans and three cans of food which would be our dinner. When I looked at those pans and cans, I felt broken-hearted. We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen and the coldness in my heart was colder than ice.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
When I was a baby, my parents gave me anything I wanted. I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.
That was when the real estate market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.
Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie my mom would say “I’m sorry, honey but we really can’t afford that right now.” But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn’t used to hearing “no.” So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn’t know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.
Paragraph 1:
On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked.

【答案】 And so I had no choice but to continue. I got to the sidewalk and took a right, moving slowly on. I had traveled 150 feet before I stopped. I had no idea what would come next, blank and frustrated. I took a bite of the still-moist cookie, put it back in my pocket, and decided that my mother deserved one last chance. I turned around and moved back to the house, leather suitcase swinging like a swing. A moment later, I was back at home.
“Robbie ” My mother’s trembling voice appeared from the darkened living room. I peeked in. It was my mom. “I’m happy you’re home,” she said. Her voice was gentle, like hot cocoa on a cold winter’s night. She’d been crying apparently. She managed a smile when I stepped over to her, my anger and disappointment fading away. I hugged her tightly, tears streaming down my face. Whenever the old leather suitcase came into my mind, I recalled the lesson of that misty fall morning: My mother did love me. She loved me enough to let me find home.

“Baby girl, where are you ” Surrell called out wildly. His throat and lungs burned as if he'd inhaled fire instead of the smoke and ash in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟) emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. A horrible thought crossed his mind: I'm probably gonna die up here. Finally he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. Her body was limp (跛行) and she wasn't breathing. He scooped(抱起) her into his arms and rushed out.
The next thing Surrell knew was that he was lying in the hospital. When he woke up, he found himself surrounded by flowers and delicate greeting cards. Then a lovely face came over and whispered a soft “thank you” in his ear, and he knew the beautiful angel was fine. Pictures of burning sofa and cracking wood started to flash through his mind. He remembered the heat of the flames on his cheeks and how he fought through the smoke and put Tiara down on the porch. Although the fire exacerbated Surrell’s lung condition, and he had to take extra medication that helped open his airways, he felt it his duty to save the little one from blaze and said “It’s a small price to pay and I’d do it again in a heartbeat without giving it a second thought.”
