U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the best countries for adventure, based on each country’s score across five features: fun, friendliness, climate, scenery, and charm.
Brazil
With a perfect 10 on both the “fun” and “charm” scores, the country’s wide landmass makes it easy to explore vastly varying landscapes in completely different ways. Visitors can go from surfing the Pororoca on the Amazon River to resting on a Caribbean-like beach on the islands off the eastern coast. Maybe they like exploring some of the unique places, like the white dunes (沙丘) of Lencois Maranhenses or the wild look of Ilha Grande.
Italy
While Italy might be best known for its food, art and architecture, the country has a more actively adventurous side too, ranking highest in the “scenery” score.
In Catania, Sicily, people can swim in the deepest blue sea and after few hours be on the top of the highest active volcano in Europe----Etna. From one village to the next, from valley to hilltop, the culture changes, the food varies and even the language can be different.
Spain
With its sky-high scores in “friendliness” and “fun”, adventure in Spain is always as close as the nearest street, say residents. The thing people most enjoy in Spain is the street life.
Besides, if you love winter, head for Madrid, which is surrounded by mountains and has three ski resorts within an hour’s drive, while warm weather lovers are better off in beachfront Barcelona.
Thailand
Combining high scores in both “scenery” and “fun”, Thailand attracts an eclectic(兼容并蓄的)mix of people that make for an adventurous atmosphere throughout the country. This can best be experienced on the island of Koh Phangan where the popular Full Moon Party is held each month.
People looking for more traditional exciting adventure should head for Chiang Mai to try whitewater rafting on the Mae Taeng River, or attempt waterfall abseiling(索降) at the Doi Inthanon National Park.
31. In Italy, you can________.
A. rest on a Caribbean beach
B. swim in the largest sea in the world
C. enjoy the scenery on the top of Etna
D. appreciate more friendliness than in Spain
32. Where is the eclectic spirit best shown in Thailand

I was out of work, doing nothing but passing the time when I came across an advertisement where you could apply to be a volunteer in a blood donation camp. When I was in college, I tried to donate blood for several times, but I failed because I was underweight. After that it never occurred to me to donate again, so the ad caught my attention. I dialed the number and volunteered for it.
It was fun volunteering for it. The blood donation camp was set up every three months, so I used to go out and meet new and old donors. It was a sort of picnic for me till one day a teenage girl came up to the camp.
“Hello! Um,I'm suffering from hemolytic anemia(溶血性贫血),so I just want to know if there is an arrangement in the camp for plasma (血浆) donors " she asked.
To be frank, I could not even catch what she was suffering from, but I was sure I heard"anemia". Though a layman in biology, at least I knew "anemia" had something to do with a deficiency(缺乏)of blood in a person. I recalled all the key points of my biology classes just not to make a fool of myself there but still said,"I'm sorry I didn't get your question. What are you suffering from "
"I'm suffering from hemolytic anemia. It is a disorder where the red blood cells are destroyed before their normal life span. In every 120 days, I undergo a blood transfusion," she replied.
"Oh, I'm sorry, but clearly you need blood in your body. Then why do you .…."
She smiled and interrupted me, "I just want to donate the plasma. You know, it is because of people like you that I'm able to stand here. Everything I do is a gift from people who donate blood. I'm so grateful to all of you and I also want to participate in saving lives. I want to donate plasma in case there is someone who needs a transfusion of plasma."
I was speechless. I had never taken blood donation seriously. For me, it was just a day of fun, laughing with others and eating free ice cream. Here I was standing before a person who was sick but still willing to help others. So I urge everyone to donate blood as much as they can.It saves lives! It truly does!
34. Why did the advertisement appeal to the author
A. She had never managed to donate blood before.
B. She needed to do something for a living.
C. She wanted to help more people in need.
D. She thought it interesting to do the work.
35. What does the underlined word "layman" in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Genius. B. Beginner.
C. Expert. D. Nonprofessional.
36. What was the purpose of the girl's plasma donation
A. To call on more people to donate blood.
B. To give back to society for saving her life.
C. To help those having financial difficulties.
D. To reduce the number of blood transfusions.
37. Which of the following best shows the author's emotional changes when talking with the girl
A. Worried → grateful. B. Confused → ashamed.
C. Amused → regretful. D. Annoyed → embarrassed.

File it under strange things cats do! Last month, a post made thousands of people do some rather strange behavior themselves: taping a square on the floor and seeing if their cat would sit in it. Evidently, a lot of feline (猫科的) friends ended up sitting in these pretend boxes their people made, according to the Washington Post. But why Why do cats love boxes—even outlines (轮期) of boxes
Well, why do cats do anything they do People have been trying to figure that out for the past 4,000 years. Feline behavioral scientists say that cats love boxes because seeking out confined (封闭的) spaces is the nature of the larger species from which the domesticated (被驯养的) cats evolved. Out in the wild, confined spaces allow felines to protect themselves and track their prey (捕食物) according to Live Science. A study out of Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed that hiding in boxes significantly reduces cats’ stress levels and can even make them more willing to interact with humans overall. Another study suggests that they are drawn to boxes because they are more comfortable at a higher temperature than most of us keep our homes. Thus, the box provides them with a way to stay warm.
One Reddit user guessed that the ancient Egyptians kept what we now know as the domesticated cat having a natural preference for sitting in boxes because it helped to keep their pets from wandering. “By the hundredth generation or so, even the outline of a box was enough.…. and that habit is still present in them to this day.” This needs more scientific evidence. But it could help to explain why a cat would be drawn to a tape-on-the-floor box.
38. What does the author mainly want to introduce by mentioning that post
A. Cats can easily get fooled.
B. Cats are a very strange animal.
C. Cats have a preference for boxes.
D. Cats love playing with their owners.
39. According to feline behavioral scientists, why do cats love confined spaces
A. They put their prey in confined spaces.
B. They want to interact with humans this way.
C. They get used to reducing stress in confined spaces.
D. They’ve evolved this interest from the early bigger cat family.
40. Which of the following explanations remains to be proved
A. Cats need to keep their body warm.
B. Cats feel more comfortable in the box.
C. Cats were made to keep still in the box.
D. Confined spaces bring cats a sense of security.
41. What would be the best title for the text
A. When do cats develop a taste for boxes
B. Why do cats do anything felines do
C. Why do cats have strange behavior
D. Why do cats love boxes

On August 3, 2020, a New Jersey schoolteacher named Julia Mooney put on a grey button-down dress and wore it to work. She wore it the next day and the next. In fact, she continued to wear that same dress for 100 days in a row. Mooney wanted to get people---her middle school students, in particular---thinking about fashion in a new way and how we live in what she describes as a "culture of excess", closets overflowing with clothes far more than we need.
At first, Mooney said nothing to her students about her experiment. There was no formal class discussion until several weeks later, at which point the students were responsive. Mooney said that her students could really understand the idea that we need to judge each other based on what we do and not what we wear. "As they try to define themselves the students are often identifying with brands or superficial(表面上的)things. Many seemed excited to have a reason to talk about how silly all of that really is."she said.
A quest for greater simplicity is partly what inspired Mooney in the first place. On her website, she wrote that "spending a long time thinking and worrying about what to wear in the morning will be a thing of the past". It also solved the problem of limited closet space in an old house.
If there was a tear (破洞)Mooney patched it with her sewing machine. She was careful with it so she wore an apron(围裙) to keep it clean---just like people did in years gone by.She washed the dress on weekends.
“The challenge I'm presenting is this: Let's think before we buy it, wear it, throw it away and buy again. Are we just perpetuating(使持续)a culture that defines us based on what we're wearing rather than what we're doing What if we spent our energy trying to be good, interesting humans instead of trying to look good and interesting " she said.
Mooney herself is back to wearing pants to work, but the effect of the experiment lingers. She said, "I'm expressing my interest in the health of our planet and the people who occupy it,while channeling less of my energy into my wardrobe and more into loving my children, being patient with my students and embracing my day-to-day existence."
42. Why did Julia Mooney wear the same dress continuously
A. She liked that dress most.
B. She tried to save time and money.
C. She had to follow a fast fashion trend.
D. She wanted to arouse people's reflection.
43. Which word best describes the students' attitude to the culture of judging people by their appearance
A. Opposed. B. Indifferent.
C. Uncertain. D. Optimistic.
44. What did the author mainly talk about in paragraph 4
A. The aim Mooney wanted to achieve.
B. The influence Mooney was trying to exert.
C. Efforts Mooney made to keep the plan going well.
D. Difficulties Mooney encountered in carrying out the plan.
45. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is our responsibility to protect the earth's environment.
B Mooney is putting more energy into worthwhile things.
C. Mooney doesn't care what she wears every day.
D. People should be grateful for their daily lives.

Created in the 1920s by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect who designed the red public telephone boxes, which can be seen all over the UK, are regarded as one of the most typical symbols of this country.
However, public phones have had their day despite their lovely appearance. While coin-operated and card-operated telephones are on the edge of extinction (灭绝), mobile phones are playing a significant role in people’s lives. Though they are more portable, flexible and widely used, mobile phones have their kryptonite: battery life. Instead of destroying the phone booths, a project was then promoted to recycle and reuse them. To meet the environment-friendly need, people are allowed to rent or use the red phone boxes in a new way. Therefore, they are making an unusual comeback.
When you take a walk down Tottenham Court Road in London and find your mobile phone in a low-battery condition, there happens to be a green option for you. The abandoned phone booths are being reused as free charging stations powered by solar energy.
Inside the booths, which are newly painted green, there are various adaptors (适配器) that can be connected to different brands and models of mobile phones. Just walk in, plug your phone in, and charge it up whenever it needs power. Most people would stay inside the boxes while they charge. Fully aware of this when starting the project, Solarbox can now reach a large number of people by displaying ads on solid equipment (实体设备). Its advertisers include well-known companies like Uber.
Apart from changing phone booths into solar-powered charging stations, other forms of changes can be found in and outside the UK. For example, there is medical equipment or minilibraries adapted from phone booths, while in America, thousands of phone booths have been transformed into wi-fi hot spots.

Imagine you’re standing in line to buy an after-school snack at a store. You step up to the counter (柜台) and the cashier scans your food. Next, you have to pay. But instead of scanning a QR code (二维码) with your smartphone, you just hold out your hand so the cashier can scan your fingerprint. Or, a camera scans your face, your eyes or even your ear.
Now, this type of technology might not be far away. As technology companies move away from the traditional password, biometric security (生物识别技术), which includes fingerprint, face and voice ID, is becoming increasingly popular.
But despite its popularity, experts warn that biometrics might not be as safe as we’d imagined.
When introducing the new iPhone’s Face ID feature at Apple’s Keynote Event, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president, said, “The chance that a random (随机的) person in the population could look at your iPhone X and unlock it with their face is about one in a million.”
But it’s already been done. In a video posted on community website Reddit, two brothers showed how they were each able to unlock the same iPhone X using their own face. And they aren’t even twins.
“We may expect too much from biometrics,” Anil Jain, a computer science professor, told CBS News. “No security systems are perfect.”
Earlier this year, Jain found a way to trick biometric security. Using a printed copy of a thumbprint, she was able to unlock a dead person’s smartphone for police, according to tech website Splinter.
“It’s good to see biometrics being used more,” Jain told CBS News, “because it adds another factor for security. But using multiple (多种的) security measures is the best defense (保障).”
43. What’s a major problem of the iPhone X’s Face ID system
A. It often fails to recognize its owner’s face.
B. Different faces could be used to unlock the same phone.
C. Face data could be used for other purposes.
D. It takes too long to unlock the phone.
44. What does Anil Jain think of biometric security
A. It is perfect enough.
B. It has caused much trouble for police.
C. It’s more secure than traditional measures.
D. It should be used with other security measures.
45. The author wrote this article mainly to ______.
A. describe the popularity of biometrics
B. show how biometrics has changed our lives
C. point out various problems with biometrics
D. discuss the security problems of biometrics

Driving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting yet nerve rackingI had never been to such an amazing national park before yet I wasn't the most athletic person so I knew that I couldn't stick through all the hiking up and down.It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience.
The ride there was definitely long but worth it.As I woke up from my nap,I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking with capturing views.Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts.Even though I fell a couple of times,I still had a lot of fun.The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together.
The great thing about nature is that,it's just you,the views, and the people around you. There's nothing there to bother you and it's the best way to relax and enjoy yourself.Yosemite has 5 of the world's highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible,it's formed in ways that literally take your breath away. Some of them are a deep dark color with waterfalls forming, some are formed with spots of green peeking out. It's definitely something you wouldn't want to miss. The park also has 67 mammalian species with a variety of different types of animals that roam around you.
Yosemite isn't the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It's a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature has to offer.

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, "In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence". Given that this is the case, why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit
First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.
Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fir On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.
After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution; listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.
Finally, students need f. consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start What do I really want What am I afraid off As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.
There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

C. how to analyze youth violence D. how to deal with school conflicts

A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime
B. a small conflict can lead to violence

A. To find out who to blame.
B. To get ready to buy new things.
C. To make clear what the real issue is.
D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match.
39. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ______.
A. there was a decrease in classroom violence
B. there was less student cooperation in the classroom
C. more teachers fell better about themselves in schools

Most children now chat daily online or via their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge community of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but socialise with confidence online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues, or problems at home.
Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as bullying or arguments. Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive or illegal purposes. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.
To keep children safe, your supervision as a parent must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chatrooms your children visit.
Remind children that online friends are still strangers. Reminding them of the risks will keep them alert(警惕的).
Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the interactive areas of websites, like chatrooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations(缩写)such as atb— all the best, bfn—bye for now, cul8er—see you later, gr8— great, idk—I don’t know, kit— keep in touch, paw—parents are watching, lol—laugh out loud, xlnt—excellent! It seems like another language, and it is!
41. The passage is written for the ________.
A children
B. parents
C. teachers
D. Internet bar owners
42. Which of the following will the author probably agree with
A. The chat language is strange to the adults.
B. The Internet is a good place for children.
C. The Internet is no good for children.
D. Children shouldn’t go online.
43. According to the passage, we know that the author advises ________.
A. people not to use the net language
B. children not to meet friends freely
C. teachers to have students study on computers
D. parents to protect their children from online dangers
44. In order to keep children safe online you’d better ________.
A. choose suitable websites and chatrooms for them
B. teach them to use the Internet
C. surf the Internet together with them
D. forbid them to use the Internet
45. If you stand beside your son when he is chatting about something secret online, he may use “________”.
A. bfn
B. lol
C. paw

When people who are nature lovers worldwide wish all humans to realize the importance of their natural surroundings, many Australians are turning caring for the environment into a way of life.
Julie, an Australian housewife in Brisbane is one such example. Even though autumn is approaching Australia's Brisbane in April, one can still watch colorful blooming (盛开的) flowers in Julie's little garden, as she tells that in her community,“Each of us has a beautiful yard. The whole community, from children to elderly people, takes care of the environment as if they are taking care of their own garden.”
“Gardening is the most popular club in our community,” she says. “A lot of retired people don't just regularly organize gardening lectures, but also personally visit families in the community to provide gardening training. So you can see that flowers continue to blossom(开花) in our gardens throughout the year.”
Talking about her people's sense of caring for the environment, Julie says when people in the community take along their dog, they always carry a garbage bag to deal with the dog's waste. “In our community, you will never experience the embarrassment of stepping on the dirty waste while you are walking on the grass,” says Julie with a smile. “Taking care of the dog's waste can also help to develop children's sense of responsibility!”
As to protecting water resources, the Australian government has made strict rules for families. Julie says, “We certainly would not use tap water to water the flowers!” She says almost every family in her community has a huge tank used to store rainwater, which is later used as the resource of all outdoor water use, including car washing and watering the garden. With a satisfied smile Keisha finished the last sentence of her English essay about one of her heroes, Rosa Parks, an important figure in the Civil Rights Movement.
“Keisha,” her mother shouted from downstairs. “It’s almost 4:15.”
“Don’t worry. I won’t be late. ” Keisha pulled down a storybook from her bookshelf, as she always read to the nursing home’s residents. And on an impulse(一时心血来潮), she added her English notebook as well.
As Keisha came running in the door, the manager told her, “We have a new resident this week, Mrs. Ruby Watson. She’s still adjusting to her new surroundings. You’ll find her in Room 28. And by the way, Keisha, good luck.”
Keisha walked down the hallway at a quick pace. As she entered Room 28, she met two sharp brown eyes staring at her doubtfully.
“I’m Keisha Jackson, a volunteer,” Keisha explained. “I come here to help pass the time with residents, or read to them, or, . . .” Keisha started stammering(结巴)as Mrs.
Watson continued to stare at her.
“I didn’t request anyone to keep me company,” Mrs. Watson interrupted. “I’m alone most of the time, and that’s how I prefer it.”
“I brought along some funny stories,” Keisha said hesitantly.
“I’m not in the mood for funny stories,” Mrs. Watson replied angrily. “What else do you have ”
Nervously, Keisha opened her notebook to her essay. She read the title aloud, “Rosa
Parks: A Woman of Courage and Conviction(信念).” She glanced at Mrs. Watson to see how she might react but to her surprise, Mrs. Watson’s face relaxed and her eyes shone.

“Because… you were a woman of courage and conviction too.”

Then, an OIC representative gave us some details, which somewhat interested me. Living the light life
Many of us like to dine out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty, fat-filled dishes and sugar-charged desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives dine smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fiber meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid expansion of restaurants specializing in light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report released by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients are the theme of the light meal.
“These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many young people, especially millennials (千禧一代), are into them.Diners see it as a great way to avoid bloating (变胖),” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I felt my appetite (胃口) has shrunk. I now prefer light flavors,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behavior are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.
