The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop. " someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him, The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. Jane and Tom rushed out of the door and went along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them. They called her Auntie Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajamas — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She may have run for safety like everyone else! " Tom said. However. Jane refused to give up and said, " I know Makcik is still inside. " Jane was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go! "

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a weeklong tropical cruise (热带船游). Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.
The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.
Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.

For the past two years, I have held the storytelling championship. I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be regarded as the champion again. Consequently, I became so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to present your work for the contest ” She had taught me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my lines. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous. Soon, it was my turn to talk.

Caroline’s Treats
Every Saturday, Caroline came to the Westport Animal Shelter to visit Jinks. “Can I take Jinks home with me?”Caroline asked Ms Preston, the woman in charge of the shelter. “He can’t go home with anyone quite yet,” said Ms Preston. “His leg is injured, and it will take time to heal. And you’d better ask your parents before adopting a dog, anyway!”added Ms Preston.
As soon as she got home. Caroline started talking to her mom about Jinks. “Well, I sure hope Jinks gets better soon,” said Mom. “Ms Preston told me the shelter is about to close.”“What?”asked Caroline, her voice rising with alarm. “I ran into Ms. Preston yesterday. She said the shelter can’t afford to stay open.” Mom explained. “Oh, no!” Caroline cried. “But the shelter can’t close. What will happen to all of the animals there?” Suddenly, Caroline brightened. “My friends and I will figure out how to save the shelter.”
The kids agreed to hold a Save the Shelter Fair. They met all week to plan the fair and each of them prepared something special. Caroline decided to bake some cookies to sell on the fair. “What should I call my cookies?”Caroline asked her mom, who was helping her. “How about Caroline’s Treats?”said Mom.
It was beautiful, sunny on the day of the fair. Everything was a big success—except Caroline’s bake sale!No one was buying Caroline’s Treats!
Just then, Mr. Larson came by with his dog, Bowser. Caroline threw Bowser a piece of her cookies, and in no time, Bowser finished it and was looking around for more.
“Great doggie treats!”said Mr. Larson “I’ll take a bag. No, three bags.” Mr. Larson must have told other people about the treats, because before long, more and more people with dogs were stopping by.
Paragraph 1
Soon customers were lining up to buy Caroline’s Treats for their dogs!
Paragraph 2
The next Saturday, Caroline made her usual stop at the shelter.

阅读下而材料,根据共内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One night, when I was in deep sleep, our neighbor from across the street fiercely knocked on our front door in a great hurry. She was screaming for us to open it. We ran to the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!”
Immediately we ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street with their sirens(警报器) screaming. The fire was huge! Flames(火焰) were shooting wildly out of the windows and through the roof of the hundred-year-old, three-story house next door. The flames were so tall that they were visible a few miles away. Fire engines filled our entire street, from one end to the other, and even blocked the two cross streets.
My husband raced next door to be sure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and safe... including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged on those doors to be sure the neighbors were safe, too. They were. The air was thick with smoke, and it was hard to see and breathe as he came back down our street and arrived home.
We were almost grateful for COVJD-19. Because of it, we were wearing our masks as we always did when we were outside. We sat outside watching the firefighters do the wonderful job that they did.
Our street was crowded with fire trucks, eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the street bright enough that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The medical workers and ambulances also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe house” with our next-door neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too. We made sure she had plenty of water, and she stayed in the house with our dog.

【答案】Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane's hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and of fered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane's mind. She told them Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs. And then some neighbours rushed her to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighbourhood felt relieved. Jane and Tom's joy was immense.

【答案】With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply. Stepping onto the stage and facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. All of a sudden, I found my mind went blank. I couldn’t express myself wholly. My legs began trembling and my voice stuttered every now and then. Feeling terrible and ashamed, I turned around and rushed down from the stage without even saying sorry to the judges and the students below the stage.(76)
The teacher’s words changed me and gave me the confidence to step onto the stage again. While standing there, I felt relaxed this time. Saying sorry to the judges for what I had done, I spoke in an energetic voice, which inspired the passion from my classmates supporting me all the time. They applauded and cheered as I finished the story. Though not gaining any medals, I finally understood the meaning of the saying, “Practice makes perfect.”(77)

Luckily, all family members were outside and safe including the dog. The house was not completely destroyed. Only several rooms would need to be reconstructed, while the rest of the house could be cleaned. Most of it, while smoky and damp, was repairable. Some neighbors came here to help them clean the house. The neighbor’s gratitude for the firefighters and other neighbors is overwhelming. They couldn’t stop saying “Thank you.”
Many neighbors nearby sent lots of things, such as fruits, cloches, quilts, beds and so on. This neighbor didn’t know the homeowners, even their names. She was deeply moved. After the fire, the relationships among the neighbourhood were more harmonious, and neighbors were more friendly. They are not sorrow about the fire. Instead, they know love and care make a difference. In fact, no matter what difficult things happen, only if we help each other and work hard, can we overcome them. Be together for a shared future.
