Can plants talk Modern study has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insets. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning. or a call for help: “I’m being attacked! When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will lead how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other, Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
30. What will plants do when they are attacked by insects
A. They will kill the insects by themselves.
B. They will control the wasps to kill the insects.
C. They will send out signals to ask for food.
D. They will produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help.
31. How is the wood wide web linked by fungi
A. By making noises with their roots.
B. By spreading chemicals to each other.
C. By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.
D. By leading to bad effects.
32. What is the writer’s purpose of the last paragraph
A. To give people hope for further studies.
B. To praise scientists for their great achievements.
C. To call on people to protect the plants on Earth.
D. To encourage people to grow more plants.
33. What is the best title for the passage

Travellers have known for a long time that lighter food will make their journey easier. It is no different in the space program. Travellers use rehydratable foods. Water is taken out from the foods during preparation, so travellers do not have to carry very much weight with them. Taking rehydratable foods makes it easier to travel. All weight going into space causes raising amount of fuel. It is important to reduce as much weight as possible. Because the fuel cells on the spaceship produce water as a byproduct, water is easily produced. Therefore, taking rehydratable foods along with this water is reasonable because this reduces the amount of weight in the spaceship. The rehydratable foods also take up much less space, and space is valuable when there is not much space in a spaceship or space station.
In today’s class, we are going to carry out the process of making rehydratable food. First, read the instructions about making instant puddings. Calculate the amount of dry mix material necessary for one pudding. Record the amount. Nonfat dry milk is required when making instant pudding. Remember not to use whole milk. Calculate the amount of nonfat dry milk necessary for an instant pudding. Measure the dry mix material of the pudding and the proper amount of nonfat dry milk. and place both into a zip-locking bag. Shake and stir the dry materials until completely mixed. Pour the correct amount of water. Close the zip-locking bag, and shake the package until the materials completely mixed. That’s how we prepare a simple rehydratable food for space travel.
Here is more information about rehydratable space food.
Whole milk with fat in it can not be turned into rehydratable food and has a terrible taste. So nonfat dry milk must be used in space packaging. Orange juice is also difficult to rehydrate. till some astronauts request it. During the 1960s, scientists developed an orange-flavored juice called Tang, which can be used instead of orange juice in space.
30. Why are rehydratable foods necessary for space travel
A. They are easier to cook. B. They are filled with water.
C. They help save fuel and space. D. They taste better than other foods.
31. Which shows the correct steps to make a rehydratable pudding
a. Add water and mix all the materials.
b. Mix the dry mix material and nonfat dry milk.
c. Put the dry material and nonfat dry milk into a bag.
d. Get to know how to make an instant pudding by reading an instruction.
e. Calculate the amount of the dry mix material for a pudding and nonfat dry milk.
A. d, e, c, b, a B. d, c, b, a, e C. e, d, c, a, b D. e, c, b, a, d
32. What may a spaceship probably carry during the space travel
A. Some fresh nonfat milk. B. Some fresh whole milk.
C. Fresh orange juice. D. A special juice called Tang
33. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To show students different kinds of space food.
B. To introduce a type of food made for space travel.
C. To encourage students to explore the outer space.
D. To teach students how to make an instant pudding.

Today, most people in Western cultures expect to eat meals with their own set of tableware. People use plates to hold their food and drink only from their own glasses. But Europeans didn’t always eat this way.
In the 1500s, members of the royalty and nobility(皇室与贵族)used knives to cut meat. Since they hardly had their own plates and bowls, they would eat the slice of meat off the tip of the knife. They would use shared spoons to eat soup and would dip bread or their fingers into gravy(调味汁). There were a few eating rules. For example, if you had a bone left in your hand after eating a chicken leg, you were expected to throw it politely under the table.
When some of the Europeans settled(定居)in the North America, they brought this eating style with them.
While the new settlers were sharing cups and dipping their fingers into bowls of food, royalty and nobility in Europe were starting to increase their tableware. They were also starting using a set of manners to go with their new knives, forks, spoons, plates, etc. They started to think that sharing cups or plates were unclean and even impolite. Their new manners made them feel higher than the lower classes.
By the 1700s, these new customs had spread to rich American settlers. As new landowners, they wanted to have a higher class than they would have had in Great Britain. They bought their own tableware and brought them to America.
By the late 1800s, mealtime manners had changed for everyone. As the American middle class grew, they needed more tableware to show that they were rich. There was also a new system of manners by this time. Though it was difficult to understand, it had a great effect on people’s everyday life.

A mindset is the way of thinking.Your mindset can affect almost every part of your daily life. Dr. Carol Dweck, a scientist who studies how the mind works, has discovered that people with a fixed (固定的) mindset deal with problems in a different way from those with growth mindset.
Imagine that two students, Anna and Amy, are taking a really hard math test in September. Anna has a fixed mindset, everything is easy for you. Amy has a growth mindset, which means she believes that your intelligence can grow. Not everyone can become a genius, but they can improve the skills they have and develop new ones.
So which is right It’s Amy. Believe it or not, research shows that you really can get smarter by working hard, practicing, and challenging yourself.
As you know, your brain is made up of billions of neurons (神经元). They are all connected and send messages to each other. Scientists have found that when we learn, neurons make new connections and old connections grow stronger. But if connections aren’t used, they will break down. So, learning is like exercise for your brain. The more you work it out, the stronger and smarter your network of neurons will become.
According to Dr. Carol Dweck’s studies, people with a fixed mindset worry about grades. They’re afraid of looking stupid when they make mistakes. People with a growth mindset care about learning not grades. They learn from their mistakes and try to find different ways of solving problems. They ask for help when necessary. In only two years, babies learn to walk, talk and feed themselves. They never worry about looking stupid when learning. If they make mistakes, they just try again.
Dweck’s team also discovered that, with some work, kids can choose to have a growth mindset. They can do better in school. The trick is to notice what mindset you have. If you ever think yourself stupid, it’s not true. You just have not learned how to do something yet.
29. Which of the following is TRUE about neurons
A. Learning is not always helpful to them.
B. All of them are connected to each other.
C. They only make new connections when we study.

A. I will look foolish when I make mistakes in study.
B. If you are smart enough, you can do everything easily.
C. The mindset plays the most important role in people ‘s life.
D. Everyone can get smarter by working hard and practicing more.

When things get wildly busy in the morning, some people don’t have breakfast in order to save time. But that may be a big mistake for students. Whether at home, on the way to school or at school, eating something healthy for breakfast may help a student get better grades.
Researchers looked at 5,000 9-to-11-year-olds from more than 100 primary schools in the UK. They looked at what the students ate for breakfast and then their grades. And 6 to 18 months later, they found that the students who ate a healthy breakfast were twice as likely to perform above average in educational activities. The researchers also found that unhealthy breakfasts—such as potato chips or a donut did not appear helpful to educational performance. In 2013, an organization in the United States, also looked at possible connections between breakfast and students’ success in school. They found that on average students who ate breakfast provided by their school attended 1.5 more days of school per year. These students also scored 17.5 percent higher on standardized math tests.
Health experts suggest that the best breakfast is a mix of complex carbohydrates (碳水化合物), protein and fat. This gives your body the energy it needs to think clearly and to remember what it learns. Wholegrain bread is an example. The report explains that the brain needs glucose (葡萄糖) to work well. Simply eating a breakfast rich in carbohydrates may make a student tired. So, adding protein helps to prevent fatigue (疲劳). Having a protein such as milk, yogurt, eggs or meat can help students to feel full longer. Oatmeal (燕麦片), the researchers say, is an example of a breakfast that is rich in fiber and protein. It releases energy slowly because it is a wholegrain food. So, students will feel full longer.
Health experts also suggest not eating too much for breakfast. This can also make a person feel tired and unable to think clearly. They say eating between 350 and 500 calories in the morning is a good amount of energy to start the day.
30. What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To analyze why breakfast is ignored (忽略).
B. To lead in the main topic of the text.
C. To stress the effect of eating healthily.
D. To share a common mistake among students.
31. How did the researchers carry out the researches
A. By asking about students’ living habits.
B. By providing students with free healthy breakfast.
C. By asking students to fill in varieties of forms.
D. By following and comparing students’ breakfast and grades.
32. Which is the best breakfast choice according to health experts
A. Wholegrain bread and some juice.
B. A donut, an egg and a glass of milk.
C. An egg, a glass of milk and some potato chips.
D. Wholegrain bread with beef and a bowl of oatmeal.
33. What is the text mainly about
A. The way of cooking a large breakfast.
B. The importance of having a good breakfast.
C. How to stay energetic throughout the day.
D. How much breakfast we should eat each day.

It’s been 100 years since the actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin produced the film The Kid, which many consider to be his greatest one.
Like all films at the time, The Kid was made in black and white and was silent (made without any sound, not even the characters talking). The story is about the relationship between “the Tramp”, played by Chaplin, and his adopted (领养的) child, played by Jackie Coogan. The pair develop a partnership where the six-year-old boy breaks windows and runs away, so that Chaplin’s character can offer his services as a window fixer.
Although the film is a comedy, it also has some tragedy, reflecting Chaplin’s own life. He started testing actors for the role of the Kid just a few days after his baby son had died. Chaplin was known for being hard to please, and it is said that if he could, he would have played every role in every one of his films. When Chaplin visited a theatre, a dancer brought his son, Jackie Coogan, on stage, and Chaplin knew he had his co-star (联袂主演者). Chaplin later wrote, “All children in some form have talents; the trick is to bring it out in them. With Jackie it was easy.”
Like the Kid in the film, Chaplin and his brother Sydney grew up very poor. They lived in London and were raised by their mother. When Chaplin was 10 years old, his mum became too ill to look after her sons, so they had to take care of themselves. He later wrote that the film sets in The Kid were based (基于) on the places where he and Sydney had lived with their mother as children. “Perhaps that’s why the film had some truth,” he said.
29. The second paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A. why The Kid was made B. when The Kid was on
C. how The Kid got successful D. what The Kid is about

A. A film about a dancer B. A family in London
C. A place or film-making D. A life on film

One afternoon, Sally was alone at home washing clothes. She heard shots in the distance. “Another battle. “Thank you. I’m George. Could you help my friend, please ” begged the soldier. “He got shot in the leg.”
His friend was not far away sitting against a tree with a badly bleeding leg. Sally gave him some water, and then she washed away his blood with the water, but the blood quickly covered the wound again. She saw enough to know that a bullet(子弹)was not very deep in his leg.

D. The connections among them will never break down.
30. What might a man with a growth mindset agree about
A. I will look foolish when I make mistakes in study.
B. If you are smart enough, you can do everything easily.
C. The mindset plays the most important role in people ‘s life.
D. Everyone can get smarter by working hard and practicing more.
31. The writer gives the example of babies in Paragraph 5 to show that babies ________.
A. learn new skills from mistakes
B. easily make mistakes in daily life
C. learn skills faster than older people
D. have fewer worries than older people
32. How did the writer develop his main idea
A. By listing numbers.
B. By telling true stories.
C. By comparing the differences.
D. By showing reasons and results.
【答案】29. C 30. D 31. A 32. C

广州市黄埔区2021-2022学年九年级上学期期末英语试题

广州市荔湾区2021-2022学年九年级上学期期末英语试题
A. why The Kid was made B. when The Kid was on
C. how The Kid got successful D. what The Kid is about
31. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that Jackie Coogan ________.
A. always visited the theatre alone B. was possibly talented in acting
C. knew much about Chaplin before D. played every role in Chaplin’s films
31. Which of the following is TRUE about Chaplin
A. He had a poor childhood experience. B. He was brought up by his father.
C. He looked after his mother very well D. He produced films with his brother.
32. What’s the best title for the passage
A. A film about a dancer B. A family in London
C. A place or film-making D. A life on film
【答案】29. D 30. B 31. A 32. D

One afternoon, Sally was alone at home washing clothes. She heard shots in the distance. “Another battle. More soldiers will be wounded,” thought Sally. “One day I will give mother good reasons to let me help father in the field hospital!” Then she took the clean wet clothes outside to the clothesline. She nearly jumped out of her skin when a man called to her. Then she saw a wounded soldier. Quickly, she tore a sheet and wrapped it tightly around his wound to stop the bleeding.
“Thank you.
Sally ran back home to get some of her father’s tools. She tore a bandage from the sheet, and then pulled the bullet from the soldier’s leg. Next, Sally quickly wrapped the bandage tightly around the wound. The pressure from the bandage would keep him from losing too much blood and passing out.
George watched Sally work. “You bandaged his leg as well as a doctor,” he said. “Where did you learn to do that ”
“My father is a doctor.” said Sally.
“He must be very proud of you.” said George.
Sally hoped so, but she knew her mother would be angry if she found Sally covered in blood, wrapping bandages around men’s legs. “No man wants a doctor for a wife.” Mother always said.
Sally was so focused on her work that she did not hear her father and brother as they came up behind her.
“You did a good job, Sally.” said her father.

“It looks like we have another doctor in the family,” explained Sally’s father. “Maybe she can help me at the hospital.”

“Mother,” Sally said seriously, “I have been secretly watching father work for years. I know what to do and what would be expected of me. I have dreamed of being a doctor. Please let me help father.”
Sally watched as emotions ran across both her parents’ faces—fear, anger at having been fooled, and even a bit of pride.
