The Secret of
the Gas Giant
Secrets of the Gas Giant
The cassini-Huygens space probe, which reached Saturn last week, has sent back amazing photographs of the planet’s famous rings viewed in ultraviolet light. The pictures showed them in shades of blue, green and red. The different colour show exactly what the rings are made of: the red means the ring contains tiny pieces of rock and the blue and green are likely to be a mixture of water and frozen gases. Saturn itself is made of gases. It is so light that it can float on water-after a big enough ocean could be found! The probe is a international project to explore the planet and their rings and moons. It was launched in 1997 and its mission was to explore the “gas giant” planet where is the furthest planet to be seen from the Earth without a telescope. The probe has sent back pictures of some of Saturn's moons, including tiny Phoebe, which has a strange shape-like other planets and their moons, it is not perfectly round- and Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan, which is believed to be the only body in the solar system rather than the Earth with liquid on the surface.

3 a school scientific textbook
4 a collection of photographs
P65-3 Choose the best summary for the passage.
1)Using the Cassini-Huygens space probe, an international space project has proved that Saturn is light enough to float on water, and that one of its moons, Titan, has liquid on the surface like the Earth.
2)Titan and Phoebe are two of Saturn’s moons, and are made of a mixture of tiny pieces of rock water and frozen gases. They look very much like the Earth and our Moon. The photos taken by the space probe are so clear that it is easy to forget how far they come.
3)The Cassini-Huygens space probe, which was launched in 1997 to explore Saturn has sent back photos of the planet and its moons from a distance of one-and-a-half-billion kilometers.
Read the passage and answer the questions:
What does the “gas giant” in the title refer to
It refers to Saturn, because it is made of gases.
2. What is the purpose of the Cassini-Huygens space probe
To explore Saturn, its rings and moons.
3. How do the photographs show Saturn’s different rings
They’re in the shades of blue, green and red.
4. What has Titan got in common with the Earth
They both have liquid on the surface.
5. What is amazing about the images that the probe has sent back?
They are so clear even though they are from a distance of one-and-a-half-billion kilometers.
1.The cassini-Huygens space probe, which reached Saturn last week, has sent back amazing photographs of the planet’s famous rings viewed in ultraviolet light.
2. The different colours show exactly what the rings are made of:the red means the ring contains tiny pieces of rock and the blue and green is likely to be a mixture of water and frozen gases.
3. The probe is an international project to explore the planet and its rings and moons.
4. The probe has also sent back pictures of some of Saturn’s moons, including tiny Phoebe, which has a strange shape----unlike other planets and their moons, it is not perfectly round.
