Mr. Beal’s Egg Drop Challenge was an institution (习俗) at my school. The goal of the Challenge was simple—you had to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.
“Bring your container to class on Friday,” Mr. Beal said. “This year we’re going to try something different. You can work alone or with a partner.”
My best friend, Cassie, and I grinned at each other. We always worked on projects together. We’re the perfect combination. I made my favorite sandwich that afternoon while waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container. Spreading the fluffy marshmallow cream (蓬松棉花糖奶油) gave me an idea. When Cassie arrived, I told her my brilliant idea—use marshmallow cream to absorb the shock of the impact.
“You must be kidding,” Cassie responded. “Why not put the egg in a basket with a parachute (降落伞) attached It will simply float to safety.” “It’s too easy for something to go wrong. It will never work!” I argued. “And marshmallow cream will ” Cassie rolled her eyes. “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”
I couldn’t believe it. Of course we’d had our little fights in the past, but this was different. She’d never called any of my ideas “stupid” before.
“Then I’ll build mine and you build yours, and we’ll just see whose is better.” “Fine!” Cassie grabbed her backpack and stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was smashed (粉碎). Like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.
Friday finally rolled around. All the kids carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. If the egg broke, you were out. If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke. By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.
“OK,” Mr. Beal yelled. “Let them go on the count of three.”
The class called, “One, two, three!” I let go of my container first and then Cassie.

A Son’s Love
Our church congregation in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the recipient feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the recipient on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only reason our children knew was because we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a very substantial amount of money, enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then we discovered that his savings account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time job into the bank towards his education. From the time he was nine years old he had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, and he had worked very hard for his small earnings.

“Look at the little dog!” a girl screamed from across the street. “She’s got rain boots!” I smiled and waved. Yes Velma had her own rain boots, her own raincoat both of which matched the leash(拴绳) I was holding and the bow in her hair. I would never have put clothes on any animal I owned, but Velma wasn’t my dog. I’d just offered to walk her this morning when my neighbor Arlene suffered from her seasonal muscle pain.
Velma was adorable. A real sweetie. A shih tzu(西施犬) who weighed no more than five pounds, she looked like a tiny mop running down the street. When Arlene had asked me to walk Velma, I’d been happy to volunteer. I was less pleased when Arlene made me spend 20 minutes dressing her up.
Once outside, I’d expected to walk Velma around the block quickly. But with all the people stopping me every few minutes to comment on the little dog and her clothing, it was taking me forever. It was a relief to get her back home. I had done my good deed and could finally go off to work before I was late.
“Thank you so much,” Arlene said at the door. I turned to go. “So I’ll see you again at noon.”
“Wait, what ”
“That’s when Velma gets her next walk,” Arlene said, as if I’d somehow agreed to a whole daily schedule.
“I’m sorry, but I have to be at work.”
“Oh, I guess we’ll see you at six then.”
“Great.” I said, making my escape. I was a quarter block away before it dawned on me that I’d just agreed to walk her dog again at six! How had I let that happen Was I that much of a people-pleaser that I automatically did things I really didn’t want to do
That day was just the beginning. All the next week, Arlene “reminded” me to walk Velma at various times throughout the day. I tried to tell her no, but eventually I’d just get tongue-tied and give in.

Kenji and I had been playmates for years. We were always together when we were free after school. One day, Kenji and I were on the beach of a lake in the woods. Suddenly, Kenji leapt up and called, “Hi, Rough Lock.”
Rough Lock was an Indian man who Kenji knew well. He said hello to us and went back to his house. Kenji and I watched him till he disappeared briefly, then reappeared in front of the house. We could see him rocking in his rocking chair there.
Kenji ran into the water, pushing his log raft (木筏) out. He urged me to get on and pushed a pole into the sandy lake bottom to steady the raft. I stood there, hesitant. But Kenji promised he would not go far, pushing the raft close to shore. It sank and touched bottom, moving unsteadily, as I climbed on. I got down on my knees behind him.
Slowly, he pushed the raft out over the surface. The water was clear. I put my hand in it. As we pushed deeper, there was a sudden change in the temperature of the water. When I looked up, the shoreline was farther away than I had ever seen. The water around us was sharply dark and the bottom could no longer be seen. So I thought it was enough and suggested going back. Kenji gave me an approving nod but tried the last push. One hard push, and-splash (哗啦)!-the pole jumped out of his hands as Kenji suddenly fell sideways. He fell into the water. In the sound of waves, Kenji’s head reappeared. He swam to the beach. Closer to shore, he stood up in the water, turning to face me.
“Jump!” he shouted.
“I can’t! I can’t swim!” I responded.
Then slowly he stepped backward till he was out of the water.
I stared down into the deep water and back to where Kenji was standing. He signaled to me to jump again. I hesitated. Unexpectedly, he turned suddenly and fled down the beach as quickly as he could.

Sunlight flooded through the window when Tomas was sitting at the kitchen table, struggling with a literary classic. Streamers of clouds drifted by high above in the sky. Not far away, the huge new tower blocks lined the road. The faint sound of cars was dimly heard.
His mother was chopping tomatoes for their dinner as usual. Suddenly she said, ”You know, the thing I miss most is cooking a really hot salsa (辣番茄酱), with fresh peppers straight from the garden.” She sighed. “That’s what I miss most about Merida.”
Tomas looked up from his book in surprise. His mother had never talked like this about their old life before. He studied her now. She looked a little sad, but then she smiled at him and swept the pile of chopped tomatoes into the cooking pot.
“But I’ve already learned a lot about this new country, Tomas,“ she said. ”For a start, I’ve learned that there’s more than one way to make a salsa!" She waved a packet of chili spice powder at him, and they both laughed.
Watching his mother busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, Tomas thought about the insight his mother had given him into her feelings, and he realized that he felt the same way about leaving.
Sure, it had been great for his father to get this good job, but it had also been hard. Tomas missed his old home-especially the sun and the beach. And his mother missed Merida, too. She had loved working in her market garden, selling the fresh vegetables that she had grown herself and then coming home to cook up huge, tasty meals for her family. Tomas’s stomach rumbled at the memories.
He thought about how different things were for them now, living in this large, gray apartment block where there was no garden and no friends dropping by to share their delicious meals.
He sighed. At least they were still able to speak regularly every night after dinner with his grandmother back in Mexico over the computer-Grandmother! Abuela!

Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way. It was just an ordinary Thursday afternoon.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years, I had gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an old lady, living alone and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people.
To be honest, there wasn’t much excitement on a local postal route like mine. Except a sudden rainstorm or a holiday, every day was pretty much the same. But I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world——they could all make someone’s day.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman’s mail——the Home Shopping Network package. She would be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk.
Mrs. Dorman wasn’t at the door today, but I heard the TV going inside, so I knew she was home. Probably watching her shopping shows, I thought. I bent down to put her package by the door.
I froze. What was that Something like a weak cry. I leaned closer to the door. Maybe the sound came from the TV “Mrs. Dorman ” I called. No answer. And then the same weak cry. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. So I pressed my ear against it.

Ms. Johnson will never forget Chelsea, a wounded soul. Over the years Chelsea had always struggled, both academically and with self-confidence. Additionally, her mother had died after a heroic battle with a terminal illness when Chelsea was a fifth grader. As she began her sixth grade, Chelsea was still hurting. Ms. Johnson worried about her with good reason.
Each fall, Ms. Johnson takes the students for a five-day adventure at Wolf Ridge, an environmental learning center in the woods of Northern Minnesota overlooking Lake Superior. The week is filled with learning, team building, and overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. They go in October, and the turning leaves of trees come to symbolize the changes happening to the students over the week. The steps and growth students make at Wolf Ridge become a metaphor Ms. Johnson uses throughout the year as her students face challenges in the classroom.
The most difficult activity is the High Adventure Ropes Course, which stretches from tower to tower high amongest the treetops forty feet above the ground. Ms. Johnson knew this experience would be particularly difficult for Chelsea.
When it was time for her to fasten the harness (安全带), Chelsea was already trembling. The harness offers physical protection, but not much mental comfort when nothing but a slippery board or an unsteady wire is between your feet and the ground far below. Chelsea stepped hesitantly onto the Swinging Wood Bridge, and only after the instructor’s encouragement, slowly made her way across its shaky boards up to the first tower. With the support of a chaperone (监护人) stationed there, she began her way across the Burma Bridge, made of merely three wires and straps. Her trembling body added to its shaking. From down below, her ground partners shouted up supportively, “Come on, Chelsea, you’re doing great!”
Chelsea finally reached the second tower and eventually stepped out onto the next challenge and slowly inched her way across.

When my husband Randy died in late fall, deciding what to do with his garden was way down on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months, I cried with our daughters, planned a memorial, cried with my family, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having bought Christmas presents.
As the calendar turned to a new year, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow. I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally.
Then the daffodils bloomed (开花) in the garden.
Years before, Randy had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as a reminder of hope, a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at those dauffodils, I thought about how Randy had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully choosing plants so we’d see new blooms every month.
Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect (疏于打理) showed, for Randy’s illness had lasted a couple of years, a time when he didn’t have energy for yard work the way he had before.
Faced with the neglected garden, I felt overwhelmed in the beginning. My daughters suggested I hire a service to clean everything up. I didn’t respond.
Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. Many days Randy came home from work, changed into old clothes, and headed out the door to mow or prune (修剪). Orange dragonflies followed him around the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle breezes carried the sweet smell of dirt. No matter how cold or wet it was, the fresh air and physical activity made him energized and refreshed. For Randy, the work was quiet and comforting, which was a relief, as well as a pleasure.

Counting the votes took about five minutes, but it seemed like hours. At last, after three long years, the “PCHS” letters on my uniform would soon be edged with gold cording (金线), identifying me as the important Captain of Polk County High School cheerleaders (啦啦队员), which was quite an accomplishment before I ended my school days in a blaze of glory.
“Girls,” she began, “it is my pleasure to announce that Terry Shaw has been elected Captain of Polk County High School cheerleading team.” A resounding cheer was heard throughout the gym. How could this be I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.
Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne (宝座). She had stolen my thunder and swept my dream right out from under me. Finally, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.” I didn’t reply her with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that.
All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed the front door, stomped up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of sobs and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep.
The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived, Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well.

I’m smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.
I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could. My posture was perfect, straight as an arrow. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my arms and legs. I even ate all my vegetables. Every day I measured myself, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating!
“Don’t worry,” Mom always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really I could never notice any.”
One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition (试演), when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf (小精灵)! You’re just the right size for the costume.” I even never got a chance to deliver the practiced lines. Back home I grumbled (咕哝) to mum that I was made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals (排练), though I only had two lines.
Mia got the lead role-a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best.
The night of the show, my first line came early, “Let’s ask the Fairy Queen!” Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince.

参考答案
1.“Oh, no!” I heard someone say and raced down. Had my egg broken I tried to get to the bottom of the steps as soon as possible. So did Cassie. The side walk was already dotted with egg shells from previous failed drops. I finally found my brave little egg. I didn’t even have to open the container to see the result. Yolk and egg white mixed with marshmallow cream seeped from the container. “That looks like egg drop soup,” Cassie said. She was holding her egg container. My heart raced with nervous. Had she won I looked at her basket. Empty.
“My egg bounced out,” Cassie sighed, frowning. I saw the broken shell in the grass and said: “I guess your egg had an ejection seat.” Cassie looked at me, and her glare softened. I could see it in the corners of her eyes. She was trying not to smile. I grinned. She giggled. “A tie,” Mr. Beal said, shaking his head. But Cassie and I knew that we had won something more important than the Egg Drop Challenge. Some friendships aren’t like eggs after all. They can survive a little bouncing.

2.Anxious, I asked him to tell us where the money had gone. Hesitant and wordless, he didn’t dare to look directly into my eyes, but lowered his head, almost to his chest, with hands tightly clasped and face blushing. The scene that he kept so silent like a statue brought more anxiety to my already burning heart. Countless doubts and speculations roared in my messy mind, every nerve in my body yelling at me to hound him for the answer. “Tell the truth!” I urged, determined to find out where the money had gone. Then, over his face came a torn look.
Finally, in tears, and with great reluctance, my son told us the truth. “I sent it to the offering box with your names,” he murmured, the salty water pooling in his eyes. His words suddenly hit me like lightning. I was glued to the spot, speechless, with a lump in my throat—it had taken my son years to save that money. He had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done. The following moment witnessed me drawing my son into my arms, sobbing and apologizing. Never in my life had I been aware of my son’s love, silent but pure and deep, which had saved our family and now warmed my life like sunshine.

3. After that terrible week as Velma’s “permanent” dog walker, I couldn’t take it any more. My work and life had become a mess, and I had to think about making time for it every day. I was bored. I think I had to refuse her. I sincerely put forward to Arlene, “I’m afraid I can’t walk your dog anymore. You see, my work needs to be punctual, and I have to do a lot of housework when I am at home. Although I like it very much, isn’t it more enjoyable for you to walk it yourself Maybe if you get some exercise while walking it, your seasonal muscle pain will get better.”
“I really appreciate all you did for us,” Arlene said. “Thank you, Linda.” Arlene’s thanks made me regret not having refused earlier. I really appreciated her understanding. After I refused her, I felt very relieved. In life, we should learn to refuse, which is a symbol of a person’s true maturity, a kind of wisdom, and more importantly, a kind of self-protection. Learning to refuse will make life easier, happier and more beautiful.

Much more terrified, I couldn’t do anything but hopelessly struggle. Just then I vaguely saw someone swimming towards me. But I was exhausted and sinking owing to gravity.
When I opened my eyes at last, it was to a red-and-blue shirt. “You’re awake!” said an unfamiliar voice. It was Rough Lock, and I understood it was he who had saved me. “Thank you, Rough Lock!” I said, tears in my eyes. Kenji stuck his head out from behind Rough Lock and mumbled, “I’m sorry that I played a prank on you. I promise I will never do that again. We’re still friends, aren’t we ” I nodded, forcing a weak smile.

Taking a deep breath, I kept pushing against the door without the slightest hesitation until the latch finally broke. Forcing the door open, I was startled to find Mrs. Dorman lying under the cupboard, moaning in pain. The moment Mrs. Dorman noticed my approach, her pale face lit up, as if seizing a glimmer of hope. Then the next few minutes saw me move the cupboard with all my might, cautiously help her sit on the sofa and call the ambulance promptly. A while later, the doctors arrived, rushing Mrs. Dorman to the hospital for a complete check-up.
“What had happened that day ” I asked Mrs. Dorman after she came back home from the hospital. Mrs. Dorman explained that she was watching TV when she suddenly lost her balance. At that critical moment, she managed to grab the cupboard, but unfortunately, it came down on top of her. Much to my relief, Mrs. Dorman was fine except a pain in her shoulder. However, thoughts flashing back to that horrible moment, I felt my heart was still fluttering with fear, “Do you know what I was thinking when I was lying under the cupboard ” Mrs. Dorman asked me. I shook my head. “I didn’t get into a panic. I knew you would come just like you do every day. That’s what gave me comfort,” she uttered, her eyes twinkling with grateful tears and a smile spreading across her wrinkled face.
