My Experience on the Tomb Sweeping Festival
The Tomb Sweeping Day, also called Qingming Festival, usually takes places between April 4 and April 6. It is one of the most important Chinese holidays. Everybody gets the day off for it. This year, my parents and I joined my uncle’s family for a tomb sweeping day in the mountain. It was an enjoyabe and exciting experience for me.
The festival is held to honor the dead or to satisfy the ancestors. A family must visit the tombs of them and make sure they are in proper order. So we had some flowers, wine and some food prepared and took some tools, like a pickaxe.
When visiting the tombs, we first swept away the dirt and got rid of weeds. Then adults offered varieties of food, wine and flowers in front of the tombs. After that, they lighted incense and all of us prayed for the ancestors. I saw my parents looking serious and sincere.
Qingming, which means “clear and bright” in Chinese, marks the beginning of the planting season and outdoor activities. The day is also common in Chinese nations. All family members went on spring outing. It was great fun. We enjoyed green rice balls and tasted tea together.
A popular activity was kite-flying. So, in a way, on this day both life and death are respected. It is really amazing.
I’m now back home, tired but still excited. It’s really worthwhile to experience the unique charm of Chinese traditional culture.

The Tomb-Sweeping Day, or the Qingming Festival, usually falls/ takes place between April 4 and April 6. People celebrate it in memory of their ancestors. When the day comes, family members gather and go to the family graves to ensure they are in proper order by cleaning the graves and removing weeds, and show their respect for the dead by offering food, flowers in front of tombs. Finally, we light incense and pray for the ancestors seriously and sincerely. Meanwhile, the festival, which means “clear and bright” in Chinese,
marks the beginning of the planting season and outdoor activities. So it is also an occasion for a spring outing and getting close to nature. It’s really a meaningful and relaxing experience.

The festival falling on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month is a traditional Chinese festival. As is known to us, to warn the king, Qu Yuan, a famous poet and politician, sacrificed his life by jumping into the Miluo River. People admired him for his touching behavior and set the day he died as a fesstival to show honour to him. On that day, we often eat rice-dumplings(zongzi) and drink a special wine. Besides, what is amazing is the dragon boat racing, which is very interesting and exciting. Peopl gather on both sides of the river to watch the competitors spare no effort to make for the finishing line.
The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. Would you like to join us Looking forward to your coming.
