“I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel,” said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram’s mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could re out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps. With the money he earned by selling them he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a “bank” almost full of what he called his “shrimp money.”
The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.
But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated, and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one a tag marked $4.75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.
He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his “bank” and counted its contents. “Three dollars and twenty-two cents!” he cried. “I’ll have that ring before another week.” Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

Marathons are not for the faint of heart, nor the faint of lungs. You might think you’re up for it, but then your lungs will remind you halfway through that this might be too much. I have a ton of respect for people who do compete in them. Make sure you stretch a lot before you do one! This story though, is about someone who could have finished the race sooner but chose not to.
There are people who are well in-shape to run a marathon, and marines (海军陆战队士兵) are definitely some of those people. Military training is some of the toughest out there. They’ll make you do push up (俯卧撑) after push up, course after course, and they’ll make you do it regularly. A marine is thus well-prepared to run something like a marathon race.
Myles Kerr was a 19-year-old marine who joined in a 5-kilometre marathon. As the name implies, a 5-kilometre marathon is 5 kilometers of running you have to do. And 5 kilometers is a lot to run on foot. It is definitely not a distance you should attempt without a lot of preparation and training. Myles, thanks to his training, was even able to wear boots while he ran.
While Myles and the other marines with him could handle this just fine, one other runner couldn’t. It was 9-year-old Brandon Fuchs. The boy joined in the race as part of a group. However, he got separated from the group as the race progressed. He was now quite far behind and struggling to finish the race.
Brandon is just 9 years old, but he is fond of sports. He always sits in front of TV watching matches of all kinds of sports, especially matches concerning running. He ever participated in some kinds of running races, which made him even more interested in sports. When he knew a short-distanced marathon was to be held in his city, he signed up for it without hesitation.

Kate double—checked the words on her spelling test. Ms. Cormack said that whoever won in her class’s Spelling Challenge today, they’d win a brand new dictionary. Plus, the teacher had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N—i—c—e—l—y. Q—u—i—c—k—ly. H—o—n—e—s—t—y. Wait! She’d spelled “honesty”, not “honestly”. She hurriedly erased the t—y and wrote l—y before handing in her paper.
Ms. Cormack graded the test papers at break. Meanwhile, Kate sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. Cormack walked to the front of the class and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. Cormack did a perfect handstand.
“Congratulations, Kate! You did it!” she announced while standing on her hands.
The whole class broke into applause! Ms. Cormack righted herself and presented Kate with her prize. Kate smiled as she read the label on the box:
To Kate Carter, for her perfect score in the Spelling Challenge.
“Is everything OK ” Mom asked as Kate rushed through the front door after school. Kate didn’t answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Kate took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Suddenly, her hands stopped in mid—air. She just couldn’t believe her eyes. “Honesly”
YES! H—O—N—E—S—L—Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Kate put the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Kate kept walking in her bedroom, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize and that Ms. Cormack did the handstand for nothing

That day, David didn’t go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another man. He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time. Having lost his job, he had no idea what to do.

Mason followed his mother to the market as usual. It was a thing he enjoyed because the market was such an exciting place. There was always something interesting to see.
That day, Mason caught sight of a middle-aged man with untidy hair and old clothes. He was a beggar. He held out a wooden bowl and passers-by dropped in coins. Mason’s mother put a small coin into the bowl as she passed him by. His eyes followed the mother and son as they set off for home.
As Mason and his mother turned into the narrow path that led to their house, he suddenly realized that the beggar was following them. Mason told his mother about it. Alarmed, she quickened her steps and as soon as they got inside their house, she locked it. Mason peered out the window and saw the beggar sitting on the ground near the gate. Why did the beggar follow them Mason wished he knew.
After a couple of hours, Mason’s mother became concerned for the poor beggar. He had not moved from his spot. She gathered up her courage and went to ask the beggar to leave. But the beggar merely looked at her with a gentle smile. Worried that he would fall ill with no food and water, she sent Mason to give him a bowl of rice and vegetables and some tea. The beggar ate and drank. Then he lay down under a tree to sleep.
Mason’s mother was at a loss as to what else to do. She was just a poor woman with a young son. Since the beggar refused to leave, she and Mason built a little shelter for him. He seemed content with whatever they gave him.
A week passed and one day, Mason found the beggar gone. Mason and his mother searched for him but he was nowhere to be found. They didn’t know what had happened to him.

Jenny was 18 and she thought she would be strong enough to face going away to college2,000 miles away from home. But by the second day, she was crying on the phone, telling her mom she wanted to come home. It could be because she was the baby of a family of six and the only girl, or her family was particularly close and loving.
Unfortunately, her roommate, Zara, heard her crying. As soon as Jenny hung up the call, Zara started making fun of her. “Oh my! Does baby miss her mommy in Phoenix ” Jenny wiped her tears and asked whether she missed her parents and longed to go home. Zara replied coldly that she had put away such childish things and warned that she shouldn’t behave like a cry baby. Soon everyone in the dorm was calling Jenny “Cry Baby”. The idea of quitting college and running home constantly occurred to Jenny. But somehow, she made it through.
One day, her dad called and asked her to come home for a long weekend. In the end, her father added that she could bring her roommate Zara home and he would soon send two return tickets. Jenny had never told her parents that Zara was far from friendly or supportive. She’d been too ashamed and eager to hide her complete misery(痛苦) from her family.
That evening, Jenny told Zara about her family’s invitation. Zara stared at Jenny, her mouth open. “A ticket for me Why ” she asked. “I told them you were nice to me…So they wanted to be nice to you...” Jenny explained awkwardly. After a while, Zara said, “I’m coming!”

My mom only had one eye. I hated her! She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family. There was one day during elementary school when my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.
The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!” I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die ” My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger, totally unaware of her feelings.
I wanted to get out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied real hard, and finally got a chance to go abroad for further study. Then, I got married with a local man. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.
Years passed, and I didn’t hear from my mom ever since I had left home. Sometimes I would think of her but every time thinking of the embarrassment brought by her embarrassingly one-eyed look, I still hoped that life would stay the same way and she would never appear in my life again.
Then one day, my mom came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children was scared to cry and ran to me. I calmed them down and asked my husband to lead them into the house.
I turned to her, looking at her weary face with more wrinkles and her gray hair. Obviously she was older and life surely didn’t treat her well. However, the uninvited visit still made me angry.

Early in my teaching career, I heard countless excuses — most of them made up, many of them amusing — for why students didn’t have their homework. And, yes, “the dog ate it” was one of them. As time passed, I grew tired of hearing “I don’t have my homework because...”. So I quit accepting any excuse.
When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school, I took my no-nonsense attitude with me. “No excuses, no extensions!” I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head in dramatic disgust and with the student looking on — recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted.
Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk to you a minute ” he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. “I know you don’t accept any explanation, but I don't want you to think I’m a slacker because I come to school without mine so often.”
Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was quivering. “It’s just that...well, my dad moved out, and my mom waits tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot, and it makes it hard to concentrate.”
I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder. “Why are you just now telling me.. ” I stopped in mid-sentence. I knew why. So I changed the question. “Would it help if you stay here after school and work on it before you go home ”
He swallowed hard and nodded.

I never knew how important life was until I almost lost my little brother. It all started when my brother got sick. I was nine, and he was just nine months. At that time, he kept touching his ear. The first doctor my mother took him to told her that it was an ear disease.
After a week, he was still touching his ear continually. My mother took him to a different doctor. The doctor ran blood tests on him and thought he should be in the hospital as soon as possible. At first, the doctors did not know what was wrong with him. A couple of days later, they found out he had a type of bone marrow (骨髓) cancer.
The doctors tried one round of treatment. It helped, but my brother lost his hair. Then he needed a bone marrow transplant (移植). They needed to find a bone marrow donor (捐赠者), so the doctors tested my family first.
I was so afraid to get a shot. My sisters and I were all crying. We got it over with quickly, and it did not hurt as much as I thought it would. A couple of weeks later, we found out that one of my sisters and I were both matches. My parents had to choose which one of us should be the donor. After thinking about it for a long time, they made their decision one Sunday.
That day, after having our lunch, my parents put me on the sofa. With tears filling their eyes, they told me that they wanted me to be the bone marrow donor because I was older. They asked me whether I’d like to be the donor. Hearing it, I was excited and nervous.

参考答案
1. At the end of the week he had the sum he desired. Hurrying to the shop where he had seen the ring, before going inside he gave one swift, almost frightened look into the window. Could it be gone No, there it was flashing and shining as before. That evening, he placed it on his mother’s finger. She looked at it in surprise. “It is yours, Mother,” he cried, proudly. “I bought it with my shrimp money.” “My dear boy,” said his mother, while something as bright as the shining stone flashed in her eyes, “not one of those ladies can value their rings as I shall value mine.”
Years afterwards Hiram learned that what he had thought was a diamond was only a bit of glass. “Did you know it then, Mother ” he asked. His mother nodded. “And you never told me.” “It was brighter to me than any real diamond,” she said. “The brightness I saw flashing in it was the unselfish love of my boy.” Indeed, nothing in the world is more precious than a sincere heart.

8.One possible version
I asked her why she showed up at our front door uninvited. A disappointed and bitter smile flashing through her face, she finally gathered her strength and courage to tell me the reason for her appearance. “I’ve been sorry for the embarrassment I have brought to you because of my one-eye look.” she said, “But even with one eye, I still see no one but you as the whole world to me.” Somehow, a sense of guilty began to rise in my heart. She continued, “I came today because I got cancer. With the remaining time, I’d like to know my grandchildren and, more importantly, my daughter is doing well.”
I was saddened by the news she just shared, but what truly astonished me was what she told me next about her eve. She paused for a while so as to catch her breath. Then she revealed the secret of that lost eye. “When you were two years old, an accident happened and you lost the eyesight of your one eye. Unable to bear the fact that my baby would be living in a half-dark world, I volunteered to donate my one eye to you.” I was totally petrified on hearing the truth, tears of regret pouring down my face. “Don’t cry my baby, because you will see this beautiful world for me even when I am no longer there”. Rushing to her, I hugged her so tightly that I told myself I would never leave her again.

9.Paragraph 1:
The next day, I made an announcement to all my students. I told them that I’d be offering an after-school study hall. Anthony was the first to show up. Several days later, Terrell joined him, followed by twins Sandy and Randy. Before long, I had a room full of eighth graders to work on their lessons. I never asked why any of them were there, but I soon had a large collection of “I don’t have my homework because...” stories. All were very real. None were amusing.
Paragraph 2:
Having read their stories, I learned more about these kids. The things I learned that year weren’t taught in the education classes. I discovered not all kids come from homes that are safe and warm. Not all kids have a quiet bedroom with a desk and study light. Some don’t have a home where a parent is even around. And some kids do go to bed hungrily. Most importantly, I learned that “I’ll listen” works better than “No excuses”.

I wondered whether to agree it or not. Knowing I might save my brother’s life, I soon agreed. My brother was then moved to another hospital. About two weeks later, I went to the hospital to do the transplant. When I woke up after the transplant, I went to see my brother. He was asleep, and my father was holding him. All of the bone marrow that I had donated had gone into him. Everybody hoped that it would work.
About 45 days later, my brother’s health improved a lot. And soon he came out of hospital. He was doing fine. We prepared good meals for him daily. After he got much better, we encouraged him to do exercise for a while almost every day to help him build up his body. Now, many years have passed. He’s doing great! We feel happy and excited. This experience has shown me that we have to believe the best will happen. Also, be strong whatever happens.
