Ⅰ.阅读理解
For the first time, a causal link has been established between climate change and the timing of a natural event — the appearance of the common brown butterfly.
Although there have been strong connections between global warming and changes in the timing of events such as animal migration and flowering, it has been hard to show a cause-and-effect link. This is what Michael Kearney and Natalie Briscoe of the University of Melbourne, Australia, have now done.
The researchers compared temperature changes in Melbourne — where the butterfly is common — with recorded observations of the first brown butterfly to be seen in the spring since the 1940s.With each of the past ten years, the butterflies appeared 1.6 days earlier and Melbourne heated by 0.14℃. Overall, the butterfly now appears on average 10.4 days before it did in the 1940s.
The pair are confident in the relationship for two reasons. First, they placed eggs of the butterfly, in special boxes where temperature could be controlled and found that each larval stage had a different response to warmer?than?normal conditions. The egg, which is laid in late summer, and the first larval stage do well at high temperatures, says Kearney. The second to the fifth stages occur in winter and can't survive high temperatures. The_knock-on_effect is that the larval pupates earlier and the butterfly appears sooner. Second, they made a mathematical model combining these physiological effects of temperature on development with climate data. The model precisely matched the observed changes in butterfly emergence date.
The researchers used several climate models to find out what is likely to have caused the rise in Melbourne's temperature, and ruled out the possibility that natural weather events could account for the warming.

AI has been applied widely in a national park in northwestern China to track snow leopards (雪豹).
The AI-aided digital toolbox can tell snow leopards in Gansu Province's Qilian Mountains National Park from other wildlife, using images captured by infrared (红外线的) cameras.
Located around 3, 500 meters above sea level, the Qilian Mountains, with a large area of bare rocks sticking out from the grass, provide a favorable habitat for snow leopards. Though more than 200 cameras have been fixed in the area, sorting out relevant (有关的)information has not been easy for researchers. “To conduct further studies on the population, distribution and activities of the snow leopards, the cameras capture hundreds of thousands of videos and photos every quarter,” said Ma Duifang, who works for the Administration Bureau of Qilian Mountains National Park. “Even a slight movement in the environment, such as a pleasant wind blowing over the grass, can trigger (启动) the cameras. Sometimes, curious wildlife knock into the device, triggering the cameras, which take pictures of mere clouds.”Ma and his workmates had to go through each video, and information about the animals that appeared in the images also required human efforts. So it often took them several weeks to complete these tasks.
Thanks to AI technology, researchers in the Qilian Mountains National Park no longer need to rack their brains in search of snow leopards hiding in the wild. “The forest keepers can now locate a snow leopard from 1,000 pictures in only about 20 minutes, much faster than before,” said Huang Xiangqi, one of the technology's developers. “We hope we can combine monitoring data with field investigations to help researchers identify the snow leopards so as to draw up a more specific plan for their protection.”

Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become “Neighborhood Angels (天使)”.
Several days later, my mother said, “Get ready, and we will go.” “Where are we going?” I asked my mother. “I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.”, she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, “I'll see you outside in the car.” She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, “Is this for someone?”, as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real “Neighborhood Angel”.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.

Paragraph 2:
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph's front door to open and finally it opened.

Paragraph 1:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper. In the package, my mother included a New Year's card, on which she wrote “Happy New Year to Ralph. From someone who cares about you”. Then we got dressed and headed for his house in the car. On the way, she asked how the idea occurred to me and I told her about Ralph. She was actually amazed at my idea. Soon, we stopped at Ralph's house and knocked on the door.
Paragraph 2:
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph's front door to open and finally it opened. Ralph was surprised to see us at the door. My mother explained, “We are ‘Neighborhood Angels’, and we are here to give out New Year's presents.” Meanwhile, I handed the jacket to him and wished him a Happy New Year. His face lit up and he thanked us over and over again. Seeing the big smile on his face, I made up my mind to be a New Year Angel in the years ahead. As you know, angels are actually in everyone's heart.UNIT 5 课时跟踪检测(一) 阅读理解专项练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Many animals need to move across large distances. Often they do this as part of their natural migration. Sometimes animals need to move to a new area when food gets low or conditions get worse. However, humans have taken over huge areas of the planet. Roads and highways cut up the remaining natural areas into many small sections, making it dangerous for animals to move.
Many people are working to help animals by creating “wildlife corridors”, trying to reconnect smaller natural areas so that animals can move over larger areas. One important step in creating these corridors is building wildlife bridges and tunnels to give animals a way to safely cross dangerous roads. These changes don't just help animals, but they also save human lives by avoiding accidents.
On China's Hainan Island, scientists created a bridge for gibbons, an animal that lives in southern Asia. But in 2014, natural accidents caused huge gaps in the forest, forcing them to make dangerous jumps. Scientists created a simple and cheap bridge, which solved the problem. In 2018, the experts in Utah, America built a wildlife bridge over the busy highway. A 4.8-kilometer fence was created to help guide animals to the bridge. Normally, animals take a long time to discover and begin using wildlife bridges, so experts didn't expect the bridge to get much traffic for several years. However, to their surprise, many different kinds of animals have already used the bridge.
Now people in other countries are looking to try similar ideas. In Brazil, scientists want to create bridges to help animals cross the hundreds of miles of highway that cuts through the Amazon rainforest. In Uttarakhand, India, an eco-bridge made from all-natural materials has been built. Though it's high in the trees, it's expected to help smaller animals on the ground by reminding drivers that they're in an important natural area with lots of wildlife. Already, the bridge has got a lot of attention, with many people taking selfies in front of it.

Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says, “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation (开垦) because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion.”
The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don't have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn't exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.
The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die.
One scientist who is not connected with the report tells LosAngelesTimes that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.
He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.

Should We Create More National Parks
to Save Endangered Animals
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct __1__ And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
__2__ If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits — many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. __3__
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. __4__ They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. __5__ As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect these animals' natural environment.
F.They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.
