UNIT 3 课时跟踪检测(二) 语言运用综合练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
One day when I was 5, my mother scolded (责骂) me for not finishing eating my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my rice. When angrily opening the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no remorse,_for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.
Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. They never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defence against unwanted insects.
For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly make me think about my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing (嗡嗡) in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

The last evening of our vacation, however, we all heard strange footsteps following closely behind us as we were walking up to our room in the holiday centre. We turned around and noticed a fairly young man moving very rapidly across the beach and getting closer to us.He was tall and wore a baseball cap.We couldn't see his face and he was approaching us very rapidly. The man's actions made my dad very anxious.Dad warned us that we'd better try to make it to our hotel room as quickly as possible.I didn't like my dad's voice.I could hear anxiety in it.It was late and we were all alone. We didn't have any cell phones on us.I never saw Dad as anxious as he was then and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The sense of fear started to overwhelm Mom and me.We had had such a good time in town. Now, the night was rapidly turning into a dangerous situation.

Last year at Christmas time my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps” and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and frustrated, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman's table.
“Merry Christmas,” he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. “How much are they?”
“Two francs, sir.”
The sailor put a twenty franc-note in the woman's hand.
“I don't have change, sir,” she said. “I'll get some from the waiter.”
“No, ma'am,” said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek.“This is my Christmas present for you.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand.

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand. He picked out a red flower and placed it on our table. “Merry Christmas!”he greeted us in a cheerful voice. Before we could say “Thank you”, he went to other tables. In an instant, everyone in the room was presented with flowers, including the waiter and the piano player. In the bright light, the flowers were glowing in full bloom. These magical flowers melted our frustrated hearts and blew away all the unpleasant moods.
Paragraph 2:
The piano player came alive and pleasant music filled the whole room. A festival atmosphere drowned all of us. We merrily danced to the joyful music, singing, laughing and wishing each other good luck. The old flower woman also joined us, unable to conceal her excitement and gratitude. The spirit of Christmas came back to us again. It brought all of us together in this small restaurant on a foreign land. All this was due to a young American sailor, who, through his kindness and generosity, brightened our paths.UNIT 3 课时跟踪检测(一) 阅读理解专项练

With graduation days being celebrated all over the country, a student who has to use a wheelchair honored his mother on his graduation day in a special way. Easley High School graduate, Alex Mays surprised people present when he got up and walked across the stage at Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum.
“I was really happy — it made me feel good,” Alex said.
Alex was not given a chance to live right from his birth. He was born at 25 weeks and weighed just 1 pound, 10 ounces at birth. When he was very young, he had a disease and lost the ability to walk. After his mother's death in 2013, Alex had several other difficult life changes until he came to live with his grandparents, Dousay and her husband, Dewayne. Dousay said that when Alex came to live with them, they decided to bring him up in the best possible way they could.
Last fall, Alex said that he would walk across the stage to get his diploma to honor his late mother. He practiced hard and worked with a physical therapist for 9 months to complete his plan.
The only help Alex got was from his mom's best friend, Tonya Johnson, who pushed his wheelchair to the stage wearing one of his mother's favorite shirts. “I had support from my family. I couldn't have done it without them,” Alex said.
“Alex made everyone in the building feel encouraged that day,” Pickens County School District public information specialist John Eby said. “The school teachers knew he was going to get up to get his diploma, but the distance he walked was a surprise, even to them,” Eby said.
“Some of life's most important tests aren't given in a classroom; Alex tested himself and passed with flying colors,” Eby added.

In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I taught in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said, “then we'll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. “Flowers!” Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.
“You can't eat flowers.”— It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.
“But Mrs Sherlock,” came the begging voice, “we want flowers.”
Defeated finally, I put a pot of “funny” purple mums in the cart full of foods. “She'll like this one,” the children agreed.
An organisation had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying “Thanks.” — much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen themselves the power they have to make another's life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.
