When I was in middle school, I met my English literature teacher, who was new to teaching. She was only 22 but she always did her best to make learning fun. She would give us a personalized mini notebook for every student's birthday. I had this simple small notebook. She had filled the first couple pages telling me how much she loved having me as a student, how far she knew I would go, and other affirmations. It seemed small but for a 13-year-old child who had a hard home life, it made all the difference.
In my junior year of high school, in one English class, we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a point. The teacher said Carl was wrong without thinking much. The next day, the teacher said he was wrong to respond to what Carl said so quickly. “Let’s take a look at that again.” After the discussion, it became clear that Carl’s point was indeed unreasonable, but I was impressed the teacher publicly owned his mistake and did what he should.
When I was in grade one, my mother gave me one really awful haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids picked on me horribly, so I ran out and hid. The headmaster found me and took me back. He asked me to wait outside for a minute while he talked to the class. The next day, we had an assembly with the entire school and he walked up on the stage, his head shaved completely bald--without a single hair and criticized the bad-mannered behavior.
Twenty years later, I ran into him at the local college. I thought he didn’t remember me, but he said my name and the event. The man was and is a hero in my eyes.
24. What does the underlined word "affirmations" in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Instructions B. Suggestions. C. Encouragements D. Descriptions.

D. Carl's point wasn't paid much attention by the teacher at first.
26. Which of the following best describes the headmaster
A. Loyal and brave. B. Patient and organized.
C. Funny and strict. D. Kind and respectable.
27. Where can you probably read this passage
A. Life column. B. Science fiction.

What kind of people can become scientists When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth- and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.” Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I’m not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at the University of Washington designed an intervention (干预) to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual (智力 的) struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while solving a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their after-intervention science performance, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists. By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize with the scientists during their own struggles.
28. Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists
A. They are short of confidence. B. They lack interest in science.
C. They don’t have inborn talent. D. They have no ability to study science.
29. What’s the purpose of the intervention
A. To introduce some inspirational stories to students.
B. To expose students to scientists’ great achievements.
C. To ensure students will become scientists in the future.
D. To clear students’ misunderstandings of scientific work.
30. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Important. B. Noticeable. C. Strange. D. Long-lasting.
31. What can we learn from the research
A. Science ability has nothing to do with efforts.
B. Students are more motivated by achievement stories.
C. Scientists’ struggle stories can influence readers’ beliefs.
D. Low-performing students tend to feel connected to scientists.
D
Have you ever noticed there is some difference between city trees and forest trees A new study finds city trees grow faster but die younger than trees in rural forest.
As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without carbon dioxide(二氧化碳). However, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning of fossil fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases into the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe.
Studies had shown forests readily absorb(吸收) carbon dioxide but there hadn’t been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb carbon dioxide at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out.
To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree’s diameter increases as it grows, just as a person’s waist size increases as he/she gains weight. The research has shown about half the weight of a tree is carbon, while most of the rest is water. Over the nine years’ tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon dioxide from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die young. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more carbon dioxide.
City trees grew faster because they have less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮) in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak.
32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about .
A. The greenhouse gas does harm to the earth.
B. Carbon dioxide plays a part in keeping the earth’s temperature.
C. Carbon dioxide can heat the earth.
D. Only human activities make the temperature rise.
33. What information can a tree diameter to tell
A. How a tree is grown. B. How long a tree is.
C. How old a tree is. D. How much water a tree nee
34. How do city trees differ from forest trees over the lifetime
A. They could live twice longer than forest trees.
B. They took in less carbon dioxide than forest trees.
C. They could absorb more carbon dioxide than forest trees.
D. They weighed heavier than forest trees.
35. What advantage do city trees have
A. They have no competition. B. They grow closer together.
C. They get more nutrition, like nitrogen. D. They have less access to rainwater.

Dear Alex,
Due to my slow progress in English learning, I’m anxiously in urgent need of your guidance.
What bothers/troubles me most is my inefficiency and lack of motivation in memorizing words.Due to the limited vocabulary, I always find myself stumped by the choice of idiomatic and accurate expressions in writing. Additionally, when I do listening exercise, the unfamiliar words add to my difficulty following the dialogues, thus making it impossible for me to get an ideal result in the exams.
I would appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions.
Yours,
Li Hua
