Why Are Plane Seats Always Blue
Planes are an engineering masterpiece. Since they were invented, they have made the world a better place. Like never before, we can travel to almost every corner of the world within hours.
____11____ The only time they land is when they need to get passengers on board or go through regular checks. This means the crew doesn’t have much time to clean up the plane. ____12____ Airlines are likely to go with dark blue fabric (布料)—it’s much more of a bother to clear up a red wine spill on white fabric than on blue.
Blue is also a color that can make passengers less anxious. If you are an 18-year-old teenager, you are probably not afraid of flying. But the aviation (航空) industry isn’t that old. ____13____ In fact, even today in the 21st century, 5% of the world’s population has ever flown on an airplane, which is extremely low. But that also means, most people are afraid of flying. Some statistics show that around 80 percent of people are scared to fly. ____14____ Compared to other means of transport such as cars, it’s a much safer option.
Anyway, people are afraid of heights. That’s why planes are purposefully designed in such a way to make you feel safe. For example, the color red is associated with objects to remind people of danger or to warn people that they need to stop. Green is used to make people aware of the presence of an emergency exit. ____15____
A.The airline business is expensive.
B.Unlike cars, planes are made to fly all the time.
C.Many airlines redesign or change their seats often.
D.Of course, it doesn’t make sense to be afraid of boarding a plane.
E.As recent as the 2000s, not many people had the opportunity to fly.
F.That’s why the seats must be designed in a way to look clean all the time.
G.But blue is a calm color associated with the positive qualities of trust and peace.
Most of us, at some point in our lives, have looked in the mirror and decided we need a thorough image transformation. ____16____ But is there a way to set realistic, useful fitness goals that will keep you motivated in a workout Follow the steps below.
____17____ Keep in mind that exercise alone won’t change your body shape. If you are looking for major fat loss, you will have to look at diet, too. “People underestimate the amount of effort physical transformations take,” says Helen Davis, sports psychologist. She advises focusing on positive fitness goals instead rather than aesthetic (美学的) goals that require extreme lifestyle changes.
Next, start small and build up. According to Davis, something straightforward, such as a press-up, is a better bet than aiming for a triathlon right off the bat. ____18____ When you have mastered a perfect press-up, set a new goal of five press-ups in a row, then 10, then 20. “Focusing just on that end goal can be problematic.” she added.
Choose something you enjoy. If you don’t like something, you won’t give 100%, ____19____ Keeping score can also be a good idea. “When I set goals with athletes, I look at three types of goals,” says Davis. Outcome goals are big-ticket achievements. A performance goal helps you assess whether you are on your way. Progress goals are day-to-day activities. ____20____
Always reward yourself for achieving your goals, however small. “Even if just walking through the door of your gym is your first goal, you’ve achieved it - so well done,” says Davis.
A.Think about the goals not to make.
B.Consider what is important to you.
C.She also suggests having a series of goals.
D.Monitor these goals you’ve set to keep on track day to day.
E.The main reason people fail is that they just focus on the final they want.
F.Training with a good friend can keep you on track, when the motivation slips.
G.If we don’t achieve a desired six-pack stomach in weeks, we fall off the intended track.
Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home ____21____ Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks.
Puzzles come in a huge range of sizes and difficulty levels. For beginners, a 100-piece puzzle is usually a good starting point.____22____ Try grouping pieces with the same colours or design because they will probably go in the same area once the puzzle takes shape.
____23____ Those pieces are easier to find because they have a straight side. Stay patient as you search through and try to make it fit together. You may not find any connecting pieces for ages but then several may suddenly appear.
For a real test, puzzles that have 1,000 pieces or more are a tough task and it’s best to complete them with friends or family if you can. Choosing a scene that interests you, such as a favourite film, sport or location, can help keep you interested and determined to work to the final piece. You can get fun educational puzzles, too. ____24____
Some of the best places to pick up puzzles are charity shops. They’re often on sale for less than ?5. Once you have completed a puzzle it’s nice to exchange it with a friend. ____25____ You just upload an image, such as a family scene, and they will make a puzzle from it and post it to you. It makes lovely and unusual present.
A.So others can have a go.
B.You can’t beat a good puzzle.

G.For example, you may try a map of the world, historical timelines or the periodic table.
Would it surprise you to learn that the vast majority of adults—around 75 per cent—tell up to two lies every day ____26____
Why people lie
Over 20 % of lies are told in a bid to avoid other people; 20 % are jokes or pranks; 14 %are told in self-protection; 13 % are attempts to make a good impression; 11 % are told to protect others; and 9% are for personal gain.
How to spot a liar
So, are there any body language giveaways that can help “out” someone who’s lying Back in 2015, University of Michigan researchers identified some common behaviours among liars, including grimacing(作怪相), looking directly at the questioner in order to appear trustworthy, or looking to the right, and overcompensating by gesturing with both hands. ____27____.
____28____
Vocal factors can offer a good clue, too. People who are being deliberately dishonest—or who lack certainty in what they’re saying— tend to speak slower and place less emphasis on the middle of words, according to a previous study.Interestingly, the researchers also found that listeners automatically registered these voice changes as a sign of dishonesty, even when they weren’t being asked to do so.
It’s important to remember though that none of these pointers offer undeniable evidence that you’re dealing with a liar. ____29____
How to cope with a liar
Instead of accusing someone outright of lying, try “fact-checking” what they’re saying by asking lots of questions. Deceptive people generally can’t provide specifics and their tales start to unravel(解体). Catch someone out in this way, which at least kickstarts a more honest conversation.
____30____If a friend fakes a headache because they’re afraid you’re going to be angry with them for cancelling a night out, it probably requires a heart-to-heart, rather than an argument. Or ask yourself if you’ve ever done a similar thing to them, and if you have, let it go.
A.What liars sound like
B.What liars would say
C.After all, some people just grimace more or speak slower than others.
D.Examine the motive for the lie and remember it pays to pick your battles.
E.But if you’re dealing with a repeat offender, it’s time to rethink the relationship.
F.That's according to a recent US study where 630 participants were asked to keep a “daily deception(欺骗) journal” for three months.
G.A more recent study found that liars may unconsciously imitate the body language of those around them while their brains are otherwise engaged in telling lies.
Being a student can be overwhelming. Hours of homework, studying for tests and writing papers can leave you feeling fatigued. So the best thing to do is get out of your current headspace for a little while and shake out all the anxiety. ____31____.

Try meditation (冥想) or mindfulness (正念减压法) practices, which have been found to ease anxiety and mental stress by making you focus on your breathing. ____32____ and take yourself away from your work for a little while. A power nap might also be the answer to your stress.
____33____
Whether it’s a quick walk across campus or an online workout in your living room, it will increase your energy, sharpen your focus, enhance your mood and improve your memory.
Challenge yourself
If you’re feeling overworked, try using a different part of your brain to spark some creativity. ____34____, do a puzzle or play a board game with friends to stimulate your brain in a new and different way. Lighting up different pathways in the brain makes you smarter by forming new connections and focusing your mental power on something that isn’t your homework can make you feel accomplished, but not burned out.

They love having the flexibility to work from home and to work in the hours they want to work. ____36____ They find working from home difficult and they learn better from in-person instruction. A number of students fall in between. Whichever you prefer, you can always find ways to do better. Read on for some tips for acting online classes.
Read the syllabus (大纲).
When you need to know something, do not blindly go through your online education portal clicking tabs or go ahead and email your professor. Wait until you have looked through the syllabus for your answers. The syllabus is supposed to be your guide for the entire semester.
____37____ It should tell you basically everything that you need to know for the class. Anytime you have a question about your schedule, check the syllabus.
Note the deadlines.
In an online class, it is incredibly easy to let deadlines creep upon you or even pass you by before you even know it. So make sure that you note the deadlines. However you need to do that or find doing that to be most effective, do it. Find writing things down in your planner most effective Do it. Making reminders on your phone Do it. Filling it out in your online calendar Do it. ____38____
Ask questions.
While strategy number one told you that you should not immediately email your professor with a question, that was in regards to asking questions that could be answered by the syllabus.
____39____ Professors do not actively want their students to fail, so if they can reasonably help you out, they will.
____40____ But knowing that and preparing for it is half the battle. Using these tips and strategies will help you navigate the world of online learning and keep your GPA and morale up even when the rest of the events of the world might be bringing you down.
A.Online classes can be tough.
B.It is fun to attend online classes.
C.They think they can save much time and energy.
D.Other students really struggle with online classes.
E.It tells you what you are doing, when, why, and how.
F.You do not want to fail a class because you never turned anything in.
G.However, you shouldn’t be afraid to message your professor with thoughtful questions.
A Simple Guide to a Healthy Diet
Here are the healthy foods you should eat more and the unhealthy ones you should eat less.
Eat more nuts and seeds. They have an incredibly powerful mixture of healthy fats, fiber and other important nutrients (营养). ___41___. For example, they have a wide range of beneficial effects on your livers and on your brain functions as you age. Regularly eating a proper amount of nuts and seeds can also help you stop weight gain.
Eat more fruits and vegetables. It should come as no surprise. And they don’t have to be fresh to be healthy. ___42___. If you can get canned fruits or vegetables that don’t have a lot of salt or sugar, that’s fine, too.
___43___. There’s about 400% more salt in processed meat than in unprocessed one. The most obvious problem with too much salt is that it raises your blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks. But if you really love it, you can wash it off with tap water to get rid of the extra salt before it is cooked.
Stay away from sugary drinks. ___44___. In particular, such sweet drinks are linked to a much higher risk of obesity (肥胖症) and heart attacks.
In short, healthy eating can be easy if you follow this simple rule: ___45___.
A.Shy away from salty bacon and sandwich.
B.Reduce the consumption of processed meat.
C.If they don’t have a lot of sugar, it would be fine.
D.Such nutrients are very important for your health.
E.If you can get frozen fruits or vegetables, that’s great.
F.Stick to eating fresh and green while avoiding too much salt and sugar.
G.Liquid sugar from soda and energy drinks is the worst way to consume sugar.
Why Are Tigers Orange
The colors of an animal serve lots of different purposes — for instance, to help them hide into surroundings and escape from being noticed by preys (猎物). For tigers, their ability to be invisible will just decide whether they catch dinner or go hungry. ____46____
As for humans, orange is a color used for items that need to stand out, like traffic lights and safety vests. That’s because we have what’s called trichromatic color vision, which differentiate three types of color: blue, green and red. ____47____ But most other mammals, including dogs, horses and deer, have dichromatic (二色的) color vision for only two colors: blue and green. Humans who get information only of blue and green are considered color-blind, and can’t distinguish between red and green colors. ____48____
Mammals like deer are the tiger’s main prey, and their dichromatic vision means they don’t see tigers as orange — they see them as green. That makes the tiger much harder to spot as it’s prowling behind a bush or crouching in the grass. Although green tigers would probably be even harder to spot, evolution (进化) just doesn’t work with the ingredients necessary to make green fur. ____49____ The only recognizably green mammal is a sloth, and its fur isn’t green in fact. That’s an alga that grows in its fur.
____50____ There seems to be no evolutionary pressure, particularly for deer, which are the main prey of the tiger, to become trichromatic. That’s probably because the tiger doesn’t know it’s orange either. So, the evolutionary race really doesn’t exist for that color. It’s just that the tiger has evolved over the sweep of evolution to have a coloring, a hiding system, which protects it very well in its jungle setting.
A.Actually, there are no green furry animals.
B.Orange fur makes tigers relatively easy to spot.
C.The same is likely true for dichromatic animals.
D.Then, why don’t deer evolve the ability to see orange
E.So, of all the colors they could be, why are tigers orange
F.Colors of humans’ eyes are quite similar to many other mammals’.
G.We share this style of vision with some mammals like apes and certain monkeys.
With the weather getting colder and the days becoming shorter, some people are noticing they have less energy and aren’t feeling as positive as they usually do.___51___This type of depression is known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Researchers aren’t yet clear on what causes SAD, but it's likely to be complex. Some research suggests it could be due to a malfunctioning hypothalamus (下丘脑功能不全) or producing too much melatonin (a hormone which controls our sleep-wake cycle). Some researchers theorize it could also be due to having a disrupted circadian rhythm(昼夜节奏混乱).___52___For example, some research has indicated that women may be more likely to experience SAD — though, due to a lack of specific research, it’s uncertain whether these gender differences really exist and if so, why.
Some people notice that their symptoms start to improve when the seasons begin to change and spring approaches.___53___For people with SAD, the main recommended treatments include psychological treatments or taking medicine. Research shows that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for SAD.___54___Given it's still an emerging therapy, research on it remains inconsistent with other treatments.
Aside from seeking professional help, there are a couple of other things that people can do to help them cope with SAD during their day. ___55___The researchers of the study had participants either go for a daily one-hour outdoor walk or use a low-dose artificial light box for 30 minutes per day for a period of one week. The participants who went for a daily walk showed significant improvements in all depressive symptoms, compared to those exposed to artificial light.
A.Colder weather and less daylight may have you feeling a bit more down lately.
B.Research also shows that lifestyle factors can play an important role in both causing and managing depression.
C.According to one study, getting more natural light during the day may help improve symptoms.
D.Of course, there may be other factors at play too.
E.But this doesn’t mean that there aren't many things people can do during the winter months to help them cope with their symptoms.
F.While these feelings may be temporary for some, around one in three people consistently struggle through the autumn and winter months.
G.Light therapy is also currently being investigated as a treatment for SAD.
Parents can play a vital role in helping teens succeed in school by being informed and lending a little support. Even though teens are seeking independence, parental involvement is an important ingredient for academic success. ___56___
Attend back-to-school night and parent-teacher conferences. Attending your school's back-to-school night is effective to get to know your teen's teachers and their expectations. School administrators may discuss policies that parents and guardians of teenagers need to know about. ___57___ Although in high school, staff usually set these up only when parental involvement is needed to address issues like behavior problems and poor academic performance.
Support homework expectations. During the high school years, homework gets more intense and grades become critical for college plans. Many teens are learning how to balance academics with extracurricular activities and social lives. ___58___ It means no phone, TV, or websites other than homework-related resources. Be sure to check in from time to time to make sure that your teen is attention-focusing.
___59___ A nutritious breakfast fuels up teens and gets them ready for the day. In general, teens who eat breakfast have more energy and do better in school. You can help boost your teen's attention span, concentration, and memory by providing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein, as well as low in added sugar.
Make time to talk about school. Many teens spend so much of the day outside the home: at school, extracurricular activities, or with peers. ___60___ Still, you should make efforts to talk with your teen every day and he or she will know their parents are interested in their academic lives, and they’ll take school seriously as well and the challenges of high school can be easier to face.
A.Send your teen to school ready to learn.
B.Ensure your teen to have good living habits.
C.Attending parent-teacher conferences is another way to stay informed.
D.Here are several ways to keep your teen on track to succeed in high school.
E.But parents are still their anchors for providing love, guidance, and support.
F.So staying connected with them can be challenging for parents and guardians.
G.One way to help is to ensure your teen has a quiet, distraction-free place to study.
Remember your first day of school How nervous did you feel when entering the class room Or what about the first time you rode a bike with all of the excitement coursing through your body ___61___ These are known as episodic (片段) memories.
A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has shown that certain cells called time cells, make this type of memory possible. ___62___ As memories are being formed, these time cells put a stamp on the memories. Later, this stamp helps us recount the exact sequence of events and experiences.
The 27 participants in the study had electrodes (电极) placed in their brains, which allowed scientists to measure cell activity in the hippocampus (海马体) and another area involved in the perception of time. ___63___ Then they were asked to recall the words. During this time, the scientists looked at the activity of different brain cells. They found specific cells that fired signals during each sequence of words.
Gyorgy Buzsaki, a professor at New York University, said the study is important, as it can explain memory problems found in people who suffered damage to their hippocampus. In one experiment, scientists compared the memories of people who had just taken a tour of a college campus. ___64___ However, those who had suffered damage to this area of the brain were unable to recall the proper sequence of events.
___65___ As of September 2019 , around 50 million people worldwide were suffering from dementia (痴呆) and the number will triple by 2050 , according to the World Health Organization. Such studies will help scientists develop better therapeutic interventions (医疗干预) for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, the cause of 60 to 70 percent of dementia cases.
A.These cells help us form clear memories in a time order.
B.With these cells, we will be suffering from blurry memories.
C.Those without damage to their hippocampus had similar stories.
D.The number of people suffering from memory disorders is increasing.
E.Some memories stick with us and we can recall them like scenes in a movie.
F.The treatment of diseases like dementia (痴呆) has make a breakthrough recently.
G.They were shown sequences of 12 to 15 words on a computer screen in a period of about 30 seconds.
Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. ____66____ It can case your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive(认知的)tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. ____67____
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a l5-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. ____68____ On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
____69____ In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image(the same ones from the first experiment).
Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. ____70____ Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.
A.Nature influences us in many ways.
B.The second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
C.A walk through nature does the opposite, though.
D.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
E.After each participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
F.The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.
G.The study includes two experiments with two different approaches.
Shakespeare once wrote: “Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend”. It’s often paraphrased and used as a warming about the dangers of lending, and how you could risk a friendship through it.____71____
If our friend or family member comes to us for hard cash, it can be very difficult to turn them away. You feel under pressure to help. ____72____ So how can we, as the lender, avoid these complications (纠纷)? According to Bradley T. Klontz, an expert in financial psychology, there are some steps you can take.
Understanding why there is an unavoidable risk to lending anything to a friend is the first thing.____73____ This is because, psychologically speaking, the action of lending has changed the balance of power. The lender becomes superior, while the borrower may feel awkward with the new arrangement. Likewise, if you try to advise them on what to do with the money, it might make things difficult between you two.
____74____ Saying ‘no’ is hard when a friend comes asking, but if you need that money, denying them is probably the safest course of action. If you still feel the need to lend, making a legally binding (具有法律约束力的) agreement and putting things down in writing could guarantee deadlines.____75____
Finally, for some, it’s best to just see the money as a gift and be pleasantly surprised if something comes back. And if you do want to preserve your friendship, perhaps a bank is a better option.
A.And if you can’t afford to lend something, don’t.
B.But why can lending money be so harmful to our friendships
C.If you do decide you want to lend money, be sure to write up an agreement.
D.And if that money doesn’t come back, it can lead to fights or even legal battles.
E.It’s not just the risk of losing the money, but the friendship could also be in danger.
F.Even if you’re sure that the borrower will pay you back, it’s hard to know if you should continue.
G.But, some friends may not like the idea of being asked to make it official-seeing it as a lack of trust.
Hope for Solving Our Seas’ Problems
The world’ oceans, more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, are filled with problems: Overfishing, warming and acidifying (酸化的) waters, plastic pollution, a loss of abundance and diversity. ____76____ But it's of great importance. To care about the ocean in the 21st century is to feel conflicted: despairing what's been lost, optimistic about what we can save.
David Doubilet is a photographer who has already spent more than 27,000 hours underwater. ____77____ There is an image where Doubilet holds a photo he's made on the same reef, in the same spot, in 2009 — and what that reef looked like nine years later. The decline has been completely discouraging.
____78____ He talks about places where the coral's still healthy and is even being used to develop new species of more resilient (可迅速恢复的) coral. And he believes his work documenting all of this — the good and the bad — can inform and inspire.
“The time in the sea has given me a priceless perspective,” he says. “I can make pictures that bear witness. Pictures have this power to educate. But he is careful not to show only pictures that make people feel bad —“____79____”
That’s the message of this issue: ____80____ As Doubilet puts it; “With hope, there's always the ability to change. Whether we choose to drive a hybrid car or not, whether we choose to turn down the temperature, whether we use sustainable energy. Above all, there is hope.”
A.We need pictures that also show hope and resilience.
B.There is reason for hope and a lot that each of us can do.
C.It was like a bunch of corals, and I went back to a boneyard.
D.He has photographed the story about the changes to coral reefs.
E.Yet Doubilet remains hopeful that we can turn a lot of this around.
F.Finding solutions, or even reasons for optimism, can seem a demanding task.
G.There you'll find ideas for addressing the problems and being part of the solutions.
On her first day of school, a six-year-old girl stands outside, fearfully clinging to her mother’s leg. ____81____ As the girl learns she will be separated from her parents to enter a new building filled with new people, she begins to cry. During the first couple of weeks in her new classroom, the girl does not volunteer to speak when her teacher asks the class questions. At break, she stands by a wall, watching the other children running around the playground. ____82____ She can be heard laughing and chatting, louder and braver than at school. As the school environment becomes more familiar, her behaviours there will more closely resemble her behaviours at home. This first-grader is shy.
____83____ Although definitions vary, shyness is most often characterised by cautiousness or fear in new social situations. In many places, especially in North America, sociability and liveliness are positively valued, and children are encouraged to speak up in different contexts, connect with their peers and trust their teachers.
It’s been estimated however, that as many as 10 to 15 percent of children consistently exhibit shyness, and we know that the tendency to display fear and avoidance in the presence of unfamiliarity is found across species, across cultures and across generations. The ubiquity (无处不在) of shyness suggests that it likely possesses some adaptive functions. ____84____
Shy children might be more likely to detect social threats in their environment compared with non-shy children. ____85____ For example, a shy child might more readily notice an unkind peer or bully. She might not immediately offer personal information about herself and engage in careful decision-making about whether to become friends with the person. These factors might help shield shy children from social conflict and negative social evaluations.
A.They tend to look before they leap.
B.When she gets home, though, her behaviour is different.
C.Childhood shyness is often regarded as a negative quality.
D.Her teacher works with her parents to get the child into the school.
E.She stops crying only when she notices that others are watching her.

New parents often spend a long time debating what to call their newborn. Should they name them after a relative, a famous person or just pick a name at random ____86____ But it's our children who need to live with our choice. So, how important is the name you choose
Names usually stay with us for a lifetime, unless we decide to change them. ____87____ Quite often we hear stories of celebrating giving their children unusual names, while other people give their children names which have special meanings, for example, the name Sarah comes from a Hebrew word meaning ‘princess'. Sadly, though, our parents don't always get it right.
____88____ A study led by psychologist Jean Twenge found that a person who hates the moniker given to them is more likely to have greater psychological adjustment issues – possibly due to low self-esteem (自尊). This is because our title becomes a symbol of our self, and if we hate our name, our confidence may be affected.
And what if your name is no longer popular While names like Ethel and Gladys were once in fashion, they now sound a bit out of date, which can be embarrassing. ____89____ Studies have shown that people with old-fashioned names are more likely to be rejected on dating apps.
However, if you choose an unusual name, it's not all bad news. According to a study conducted by Professor David Zhu, people with uncommon names can develop a sense of uniqueness and can often become more creative and open-minded.
So, when choosing your offspring's name, there are a fair few things to consider ____90____.
A.They become part of our identity.
B.So, what if you don't like your given name
C.For many of us it can be a difficult and tiring task.
D.Have you experienced something unpleasant due to your names
E.And when it comes to unpopular names, they may even affect our love lives.
F.However, many children say they dislike the name their parents have chosen for them.
G.But going for something too common or too old-fashioned may not be a great choice

We may “friend” more people on Facebook, but we have fewer real friends-the kind who would help us out in tough times, listen sympathetically no matter what, lend us money, or keep a secret if we shared one.
_96_ He is a Cornell University sociologist who surveyed more than 2,000 adults and found that from 1985 to 2010, the number of truly close friends has dropped even though we're socializing as much as ever. On average, participants listed 2. 03 close friends in his survey. _97_ “These are the people you think of as your real friends, your go-to people if you need something," Brashears said.
Brashears asked people online from a database called TESS-Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences-to list the names of people with whom they had discussed "important matters" over the previous six months. 48 percent of participants listed one close friend when asked, 28 percent listed two and 19 percent listed more. _98_ He reports the results in the journal Social Networks.
_99_ Brashears said his survey can't tell us conclusively (确定地), but his guess is that while we meet just as many people as we used to, we sort them differently.
Does that suggest we're more isolated in these times when we seem to meet more people online than in person Social scientists say Facebook may actually be healthy for us. Keith Hampton from the University of Pennsylvania wrote a report. “Internet, or Facebook users have more close relationships than other people. They get more overall social support than other people. _100_” wrote Hampton in his blog post.
But online contact and personal contact are different. While Hampton reports we know more people because of Face-book, Brashears reports there are fewer whom we choose to trust with our most intimate worries.

We share this style of vision with some mammals like apes and certain monkeys.(我们和一些哺乳动物,比如猿和猴子,有着相同的视觉风格。)符合语境。故选G。
48.根据上文“Humans who get information only of blue and green are considered color-blind, and can’t distinguish between red and green colors.(只获得蓝色和绿色信息的人被认为是色盲,不能区分红色和绿色。)”可知,空处表示只有双色视觉的动物和人类的色盲是一样的。C项:The same is likely true for dichromatic animals.(同样的道理也适用于双色动物。)符合语境。故选C。
49.根据下文“The only recognizably green mammal is a sloth, and its fur isn’t green in fact. (唯一能被认出的绿色哺乳动物是树懒,而且它的皮毛实际上不是绿色的。)”可知,空处表明没有绿色的毛茸茸的动物。A项中的“no green furry animals ”和下文的“its fur isn’t green”对应。A项:Actually, there are no green furry animals.(事实上,没有绿色的毛茸茸的动物。)符合语境。故选A。
50.根据下文“There seems to be no evolutionary pressure, particularly for deer, which are the main prey of the tiger, to become trichromatic. (似乎没有进化的压力,尤其是鹿,它是老虎的主要猎物,变成三原色视觉。)”可知,此处在解释鹿没有进化成三原色视觉的原因,空处询问为什么鹿没有进化出看到橙色的能力。D项:Then, why don’t deer evolve the ability to see orange (那么,为什么鹿没有进化出看到橙色的能力呢?)符合语境。故选D。

【分析】这是一篇说明文。通过一项研究, 介绍了人们随着秋冬季节的到来,身体产生的一些症状的原因以及应对措施。
51.上文“With the weather getting colder and the days becoming shorter, some people are noticing they have less energy and aren’t feeling as positive as they usually do. (随着天气越来越冷,白天越来越短,一些人发现自己的精力越来越少,感觉也不如平时那么积极了。)”说明随着季节天气的变化,一些人出现了某些不积极的健康现象,选项F“虽然对有些人来说,这些感觉可能是暂时的,但大约三分之一的人会一直挣扎着度过秋冬季节。”承接上文,继续介绍这一现象。选项中through the autumn and winter months和上文中With the weather getting colder and the days becoming shorter语义相关。故选F项。
52.上文“Some research suggests it could be due to a malfunctioning hypothalamus (下丘脑功能不全) or producing too much melatonin (a hormone which controls our sleep-wake cycle). Some researchers theorize it could also be due to having a disrupted circadian rhythm(昼夜节奏混乱). (一些研究表明,这可能是由于下丘脑功能失调或产生过多的褪黑激素(一种控制我们睡眠觉醒周期的激素)。一些研究人员推测,这也可能是由于昼夜节律紊乱。)”介绍了一些研究结果,造成这些症状的因素,选项D“当然,也可能有其他因素在起作用。”承接上文,提出症状产生还有其他的因素,引出下文“For example, some research has indicated that women may be more likely to experience SAD — though, due to a lack of specific research, it’s uncertain whether these gender differences really exist and if so, why. (例如,一些研究表明,女性可能更容易患上SAD——尽管由于缺乏具体的研究,尚不确定这些性别差异是否真的存在,如果存在,原因是什么。)”举例说明其他因素的存在。语义通顺,逻辑合理。故选D项。
53.上文“Some people notice that their symptoms start to improve when the seasons begin to change and spring approaches. (有些
