The most creative libraries around the world
Some libraries use unique appearance to encourage visitors to explore among the shelves. No matter how
they achieve it, these libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Seikei University Library (Tokyo, Japan)
Libraries are usually known for their quiet environment, but this one encourages conversation. Pritzker
Prize-winner Shigeru Ban designed the library with free-standing soundproof pods(隔音吊舱)to meet the needs
of those who want to focus their attention on study, while also being good for other methods of learning. They
serve as perfect spots for study groups and lively discussions.

throughout the building. At the same time, the large children s reading area on the ground floor invites interaction
(互动)while making sure that other readers will not be affected by noises.

Some people like modern art, while others say that it is rubbish. But a cleaner who works in the Tate Britain
Gallery in London isn t able to tell the difference. The woman, whose name isn t known, mistook a work of art by
the German painter Gustav Metzger for a bag of rubbish, and threw it out with other bags. The plastic bag, which
contained pieces of paper and cardboard, was later recovered outside the gallery, but the artist thought that it was
too badly damaged to be put on show again, and so he found another bag. 78-year-old Mr. Metzger explained that
the exhibit, which he said was a copy of a similar work he had created in 1960, was meant to show that all art is
temporary(暂时的).
Embarrassed officials at the museum said that they had had to call a meeting with cleaners to explain which
things should not be touched. They would not say whether Mr. Metzger would be paid for the incident. However,
to make absolutely sure the same thing would not happen again, they decided to cover Mr. Metzger s work every
evening with a colored cloth. In this way cleaners arriving after the gallery had closed to the general public would
realize that they should not touch it.
This is not the first time that museum cleaners have had trouble distinguishing exhibits from rubbish. In 2001,
in another London gallery, a cleaner threw away a work by the well-known British artist Damien Hirst. It was an
arrangement of empty beer bottles, coffee cups, and ashtrays(烟灰缸), which were meant to show the disorder in
the life of an artist.
However, cleaners don t always throw things away—sometimes they clean them! This was the case with a
3
dirty bath, which was on show in a gallery in Germany. Without asking what the ban was doing in the gallery, the
cleaner simply cleaned it.
24.The woman cleaner threw away the plastic bag because____________.
A. the plastic bag was badly damaged B. The exhibit on show was taken the place of by another bag

A. Mr. Metzger would be paid some money for the incident.
B. Tate British Gallery will be closed to avoid the same mistake.
C. Artists often use rubbish to show how content they feel with life.
D. More than one cleaner threw away works of art in galleries.
27.What might be the best title for the passage
A. Damaged Modern Art Works B. Good Cleaners Make Mistakes
C. Cleaner Mistakes Modern Art for Rubbish D. Dangerous Galleries and Cleaners

Enjoying dinner with a show
A spoonful of pickles (榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste way better. Recently, a new type of pickle is
being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It refers to the videos people watch while eating that make their
food more appetizing.
The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people participated in the
discussion. Instead of being accompanied by friends and family during a meal, many young people in China are
kept company by TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the “digital pickles”.
Can this habit affect your diet According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more
unconsciously. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating patterns on four
different days. The patterns included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without
distraction. After analyzing their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric
ingestion (卡路里摄入) by about 15 percent.
To explore the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to an audio
clip (音频) about another person eating and the other listened to a clip that helped them imagine themselves eating.
The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When eating with
the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
This works not only for eating meals but other demanding tasks as well. A research project led by the
University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which require lots of attention trick many participants into
overeating. The team invited 120 participants to do various tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks.
“Our study suggests that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a highly engaging task,
you’re less likely to be able to tell how full you feel,” one of the authors Martin Yeomans explained.
28.. What do “digital pickles” refer to
4
A. A new type of vegetables. B. Electronic products popular online.
C. Videos people watch while eating. D. Digital games suitable for families.
29.. What does the underlined word “unconsciously” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Accidentally. B. Suddenly. C. Unwillingly. D. Unknowingly.
30. Why do people eat more with “digital pickles”, according to the text
A. They are more focused on their meals. B. They are distracted by “digital pickles”.
C. The food tastes better with “digital pickles”. D. The “digital pickles” make them feel hungrier.
31. Why does the author mention a different study in the last paragraph
A. To give another case that causes overeating. B. To describe the effects of “digital pickles”.
C. To explain how to judge you are full. D. To present how to avoid being distracted.
D
Beautiful coral reefs(珊瑚礁) in Thai seas have been gradually worsening due to global warming that
causes coral bleaching, in addition to certain human activities without proper control and environmental
consciousness. Recently, researchers from Thai university Chulalongkorn have created 3D-printed coral reefs
modeled on the nature of real corals called Innovareef to accelerate the recovery of the coral reef ecosystem.
Innovareef corals are coated with calcium and phosphate nutrients(钙磷营养物)that corals need to thrive
and consist of flat surfaces. The reefs’ holes serve as habitats and hiding places for many sea animals. Artificial
reefs also make use of hydrodynamics (流体力学 ) technology to enhance their resistance to tidal forces and
ensure that they stay in place. Finally, the pH (level of acidity) of the selected type of cement used for the reefs is
close to that of seawater, and the design concept is that of Lego, easily assembled(组装)and disassembled
blocks that are easy to transport and fix.
“The Innovareef is not too large. It’s light-weighted and can be carried by anyone thus saving transportation
costs. You can simply put it at any desired location in the sea and then dive down to put all the units together to
complete the Innovareef. Not even five minutes afterward, fish and several ocean creatures start to come in to
survey and make it their new habitat, leading to biodiversity around the Innovareef. More importantly, the
research data indicates that the settlement and growth rates of planula (浮浪幼体) on the Innovareef are better
than those on other artificial reefs,” said Associate Professor Dr. Nantarika Chansue at Chulalongkorn
University.
Innovareef is the hope for the effective recovery of natural coral reefs. Now the team is focused on adding
more details so that the new structures look more like natural reefs. For the future generations of Innovareef, the
team will develop a more specific design for each sea species in the area.
32. What function is expected of the Innovareef
A. To extend the life of corals. B. To monitor the growth of corals.
C. To help restore natural coral reefs. D. To protect coral reefs from human destruction.
33. What do we know about the Innovareef from paragraph 2
A. It is highly resistant to heat. B. It has low manufacturing costs.
C. It provides rich nutrients for fish. D. It is portable and easy to assemble.
5
34. What are Dr. Nantarika Chansue’s words mainly about
A. The advantages of the Innovareef. B. The inspiration for the Innovareef.
C. The methods of improving ocean habitats. D. The importance of protecting biodiversity.
35. What will researchers probably do in the future
A. Apply the Innovareef on a large scale. B. Carry out more tests on the Innovareef.
C. Make a specific design of the Innovareef. D. Conduct further research on natural coral reefs.

Do you Douyin Got a moment—or, perhaps, 15 seconds In the age of fragmented(碎片化的) time, Douyin,
which is 61 massive hit in China right now, can perfectly fill in the gaps when people have nothing 62 (good)
to do between two events; its daily plays have spread over one billion in the past few years. The Vine-like app
