I have been playing basketball since I’ve been in 6th grade.I first started out in the summer before 6th grade when I played for the Park District Travelling Basketball Team. This is where I first learned how to play basketball and found out I wasn’t very good at it.This is the main reason why I liked football more than basketball, because I was naturally good at football and didn’t have to work as hard. But because of the way I was brought up—always being encouraged to never give up, I kept at it and kept working on my basketball skills so I could be good enough to play for my high school basketball team.I played for my high school basketball team during my junior and senior years of high school.
During those years in high school, I really began to practise hard on improving my basketball skills. My main goal was to get an athletic scholarship to college and get a free education.I indeed achieved this goal and was awarded a two-year basketball scholarship at Parkland Junior College. There in my two years I was truly better than I was when I first started out playing basketball, which I know was because of the hard work I put into improving my skills all throughout my life.
After having two good seasons at Parkland on and off the court (球场), I graduated. The final step I had in mind was to come to Northern Illinois University and make the basketball team. Many doubted me and said I wasn’t good enough to make the team, but instead of listening to them, giving up or stopping working hard like I’ve been doing all my life, I worked the hardest and I’ve worked over the summer. And all the hard work paid off, and I am now a member of the Northern Illinois University Basketball Team.

A good training partner can be a great asset (有用的人) to your training, but if you get stuck with a bad one, it could lead you down the road to frustration.Be selective when choosing a training partner.1.
Dependable. Choose someone who you are sure will show up for every scheduled workout or who will call you if they can’t make it.It is a drain (消耗)on your valuable energy especially before training to have to constantly remind your partner.
Attitude. Get a partner with a positive attitude. This is very important.
If they constantly say that something is impossible or that they can’t or you can’t do something, you may end up believing them. 2.
Open mind. Get a partner with an open mind.3. In every partnership, one person will tend to be the leader. The leader should take into account the needs and feelings of the other partner not totally ignoring them.
Spotting. Get someone you feel comfortable with spotting you.One of the main roles of a training partner is spotting and if you don’t trust them, there’s not much point in having them around to help.
4. If you are a beginner, try to find someone who knows what you are doing. You will get more out of your training than if you train with another beginner.

It’s no secret that your personal characteristics directly affect how you interact with the world—but you might be surprised at just how deep it goes.Experts think that your personality can even affect how you exercise and influence what sports are suitable for you.
Highly Sensitive
“Highly sensitive people may be more uncomfortable with group exercise classes or team sports where they feel their every move is being observed.
Additionally, they may feel more upset about an ineffective or a poor workout,” says researcher Elaine Aron.
For such people, individual or non-competitive activities like biking,
running and hiking are ideal.
Type A Personality
Type A individuals often have an “all or nothing approach” to exercise. This personality type is known for sticking closely to their plan, not to mention being super competitive. However, this can cause them to stick too closely to a fitness routine, which means they might try to push past an injury.
To get better exercise results,Type A people need to be aware that following an exercise plan too strictly may limit their progress. They should be more flexible and listen to their body, especially when they are in pain.
Type B Personality
This laid-back group may get too lazy about their exercise plan, which prevents them from seeing results. They are often less willing to devote enough time and energy to their fitness goals especially if exercise is something that makes them anxious.
Type B individuals succeed in creative and cooperative environments,
so team sports and group gym classes may be perfect.
Remember, there are plenty of ways you can adapt a fitness plan to suit your needs, regardless of your characteristics.Just keep in mind what you like.

In a new study, researchers analysed information from more than 18,000 people who provided blood samples.Participants reported whether they exercised regularly, and if so,what type of exercises they typically did.The researchers then scanned participants’ blood, looking for genes(基因) that are tied to an increased risk of obesity(肥胖).Next, the researchers examined whether certain exercises seemed to balance this risk.
Overall, people who reported doing any type of regular exercises tended to have a lower BMI(体重指数) than those who didn’t.This was true even among people who were genetically easy to become overweight. But one exercise stood out as the one with the strongest anti-obesity effect:jogging.Participants with obesity genes who jogged tended to have a lower BMI than people with similar genetic risk who did not jog.
But for those who loathe jogging, fear not:Five other types of exercises were also tied to a lower BMI among individuals at risk for obesity. These included mountain climbing, ballroom dancing and walking.
The benefits of these exercises were the biggest among those with the greatest genetic risk of obesity.
Interestingly, several other types of exercises failed to counteract the genetic risk of obesity. These included cycling, stretching exercises and swimming. The findings don’t mean that these latter exercises can’t help with weight control. It’s just that they didn’t seem to counteract the genetic tendency to gain weight.
There could be several reasons for this. The researchers noted that,
for the average Joe or Jane, cycling and stretching exercises tend to require less energy than the exercises that were tied to a lower obesity risk.In addition, exercising in water,as happens with swimming, may increase appetite.
4.What does the underlined word “loathe” in the third paragraph mean
A.Dislike. B.Display.
C.Disturb. D.Discourage.
故选A。
5.Which exercise has the least effect on balancing obesity genes
A.Mountain climbing.
B.Ballroom dancing.
C.Running slowly.
D.Riding a bicycle.

It’s no secret that your personal characteristics directly affect how you interact with the world—but you might be surprised at just how deep it goes.Experts think that your personality can even affect how you exercise and influence what sports are suitable for you.
Highly Sensitive
“Highly sensitive people may be more uncomfortable with group exercise classes or team sports where they feel their every move is being observed.Additionally, they may feel more upset about an ineffective or a poor workout,” says researcher Elaine Aron.
For such people, individual or non-competitive activities like biking, running and hiking are ideal.
Type B individuals succeed in creative and cooperative environments,so team sports and group gym classes may be perfect.
Remember, there are plenty of ways you can adapt a fitness plan to suit your needs, regardless of your characteristics.Just keep in mind what you like.
1.Why might highly sensitive people be unwilling to take part in group sports
A.They will feel like they are being evaluated.
B.They don’t like socialising with other people.
C.They don’t consider themselves to be athletic.
D.They fear they’ll be let down by their teammates.
2.Type A people can be best described as .
A.committed B.flexible
C.independent D.sensitive
3.What is the purpose of the text
A.To help people understand what personality type they are.
B.To explain how personal characteristics affect exercise habits.
C.To identify the dangers of doing the wrong type of exercise.
D.To describe different types of workouts that are available today.
由题干关键词 “Type A people” 定位至 “Type A Personality” 部分,根据该部分中的“This personality type is known for sticking closely to their plan, not to mention being super competitive.”

The researchers noted that, for the average Joe or Jane, cycling and stretching exercises tend to require less energy than the exercises that were tied to a lower obesity risk.In addition, exercising in water,as happens with swimming, may increase appetite.
4.What does the underlined word “loathe” in the third paragraph mean
A.Dislike. B.Display.
C.Disturb. D.Discourage.
5.Which exercise has the least effect on balancing obesity genes
A.Mountain climbing.
B.Ballroom dancing.
C.Running slowly.
D.Riding a bicycle.
6.What does the author indicate in the last paragraph
A.Swimming doesn’t help one lose weight.
B.Diving may make a person eat more food.
C.Average people put less energy into exercises.
D.Stretching exercises will become popular.
7.Which of the following is the best title
A.Jogging Less Leads to Genetic Obesity
B.Regular Exercises Tend to Lower BMI
C.Whether Exercises Balance Risks of Obesity Genes
D.Genes Are Very Important for People’s Weight Control
故选A。
根据第一段的“the researchers examined whether certain exercises seemed to balance this risk.”

Dangerous as they are, extreme sports remain appealing among many Australian young people!Camp Xtreme is the perfect test of your heart.
Kite Surfing
It’s the exciting mixture of kites, boards and waves. The idea of using a kite to accelerate speed seems like a new challenge:Yet the art of kite flying dates back to the 13th-century China when it was a kind of folk activity.
Catch a wind and you’re moving—up,down and across the surf.“It’s always exciting. You’d jump 5 feet or 35 feet. You never know if you’re going to go up in the air,and your heart is just going boom, boom, boom.”
Coasteering
It is by far the best activity and the event that everyone is still talking about. This is exploring the coastline without worrying about a coastal path or finding a rocky bay blocking your route. You climb, dive and swim from one place to another. With coasteering, you don’t have to be able to swim as the wet suit and buoyancy(浮力) aid will keep you floating when you are in the water.
Sky Diving
Traditional parachuting(跳伞)doesn’t sound risky enough. So now sky diving is the name for jumping from a plane and listening to your heart beating heavily as you move fast towards earth before you open your parachute at the last moment.
Mountain Biking
It’s been around so long that bikers are no longer satisfied with just going up and down a mountain.Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road,often over rough land, using specially adapted mountain bikes.Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but include features designed to improve strength and performance in rough areas.

Growing up in Conway, South Carolina, I was always athletic and competitive. One afternoon, my brother grabbed me in the yard, and I felt some kind of pop.About an hour later, I couldn’t get up from a chair.Over the weekend, my joints (关节) swelled up.My mother took me to the hospital. It took nearly six months to check what was wrong with me.Then I was put on treatment. But I had so much joint damage that I
couldn’t run like I used to.
My dad was a serious golfer. One day he said, “Let’s try golf.” He carried me onto the course.Seeing him hit those good shots made me want to do it too.
It wasn’t easy at first, because I had a lot of pain in my hands.I’d played golf, but it had never really caught my interest—it was too quiet for me.But I was happy to be outside, to have a chance of competing again, and I fell in love with it.
Later I made the high school team, but I got frustrated when I didn’t win, so I worked harder.Golf was the most challenging game I’d ever played.
I got a golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina and turned professional after I graduated.I still take medication, and I’m stiff and in pain sometimes. But I’ve got used to that.
I probably wouldn’t be a professional athlete if I hadn’t got sick. The experience taught me patience, and I learned to take nothing for granted.I know how happy I am to do what I do.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging.Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes.Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout.Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place.Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives.Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children.
Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticism to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport.Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances.Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome.Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism.Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain,in rats at least.
“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important—not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive (认知的) development during ageing,” says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto,Canada.“In humans, it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病),possibly to the point of preventing it.”
Wojtowicz’s team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks.Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.
Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations:exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room.
The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.
“The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we’re young,at least for rats, has influence on the brain and cognitive health—in the form of better memories—when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that,in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.

All parents know exercise is important for children:It can lower heart risks, control weight, and help kids do better in school.Plus, outdoor activities at an early age can go a long way toward helping children form healthy habits for life.In other words, exercise is needed for healthy development. But don’t expect kids to understand those things. Some kids just aren’t into exercise, but that
shouldn’t mean they have to be addicted to the TV.So parents could do something to help inactive son or daughter fall in love with physical activities.
If parents sit in front of the TV every night, a bag of chips in hand, kids
aren’t likely to respect restrictions(限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own viewing behaviour, and serve as a role model by putting physical activities into your everyday life. When you can, walk instead of driving.Regularly participate in activities that you enjoy and let your kids see—and hear about—how much you enjoy them.In this way, they may “do as the Romans do”.Make sure that children’s fitness is included in the family schedule in the same way that school, work, shopping, and family gatherings find their way onto the calendar. You and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise plan if you incorporate it into your life on a routine basis. And your children will begin to expect and accept that Sunday morning usually means a hike ride, and a couple of nights after dinner the family takes a light walk through the neighbourhood.
Children who aren’t naturally good at physical activities may be self-conscious about their lack of physical skills and even fear public failure. These kids need all the support and encouragement from parents.Negative comments don’t work and will only serve to make your child feel bad.Remember, acknowledge the effort—choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill—rather than the outcome.
