A
A well-dressed man entered a famous jewelry shop.He explained that he wished to buy a pearl(珍珠) for his wife’s birthday. The price didn’t matter, since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a nice black one that cost $5,000,he paid for the pearl in cash, shook hands with the jeweler and left.
A few days later the man returned and said that his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like this.It had to be exactly the same size and quality,as she wanted a pair of earrings made.“Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl ” said the man.The jeweler regretfully replied “I would say it’s absolutely impossible to find one exactly like that pearl.”
The rich man insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspapers, offering $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the advertisement but nobody had a pearl that was just right.
Just when the jeweler had given up hope,a little old lady came into his store. To his great surprise, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse.“I don’t like to part with it”,she said sadly,“I got it from my mother, and my mother got it from hers. But I really need the money.”
The jeweler was quick to pay her before she changed her mind. Then he called the rich man’s hotel to tell him the good news. The man however was nowhere to be found.

The health benefits of sleep are both varied and well known. We all need to have enough sleep so as to be able to function well on both mental and physical tasks.Sleep is probably the best beauty treatment available to a person, allowing you to look younger overnight. This is probably the most superficial(表面的) benefit of sleep. The other benefits are incredibly important.
The amount of sleep that is required varies from one person to another and in many cases one person is at risk of not getting enough sleep. It is all too easy to settle into a habit that doesn’t really suit you when your family requires less sleep than you. They may well try to get up quietly and leave you resting a little longer. If they are successful in slipping(溜) out of the room and you remain in the same state of sleep then you are very lucky. Many people find themselves being disturbed by either sound or movement and then it can be difficult to return to sleep.
The fact is that whatever your reasons are for settling for less sleep than what is ideal for you,it is important to deal with your situation.Sleep is very important.Failing to get enough sleep is very costly to your health.
Many people have trouble getting to sleep.Their minds run on overtime or they become overtired.Perhaps you have simply gotten out of the habit of sleeping well.If this is the case then meditation(冥想) or hypnosis(催眠状态) can be very helpful.
Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation and is in fact the state between being awake and asleep. When learning to use hypnosis you can also teach yourself how to relax, let go of bad thoughts and prepare yourself naturally for sleep. It is natural and easy.Simply by listening to hypnotic songs you can train your mind to expect to sleep and return to your natural sleep patterns.
24.What will happen if you have enough high quality sleep
A.You can never fail to perform your tasks.
B.You can become more beautiful than others.
C.You can be joyful and full of energy.
D.You can deal with others in an easy way.

Some colours people see late at night could cause signs of clinical(临床的) depression. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.Doctors use the words “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression.Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.
In the new study American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠) to different colours. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night.
The animals were divided into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period.Another group was placed in front of a blue light,a third group slept in front of a white light while a fourth was put in front of a red light.
After four weeks the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.
Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed.“What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱) red light they did not.”
He notes that photosensitive(感光) cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle.
He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.
28.Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because .
A.they are similar to humans in dealing with colours
B.they are easy to observe and study
C.they are sensitive to colours like human beings
D.they are active at night and sleep during the day
答案D
解析细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night.”可知,研究者使用仓鼠,是因为它们在白天睡觉,晚上却出来活动。故选D项。
29.What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed
A.Their energy level becomes low.
B.They don’t sleep well.
C.Their eyesight becomes worse.
D.They drink less sugary water.
答案D

30. tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.
A.Dim light B.Blue light
C.Red light D.Darkness
答案B
解析细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.(这就解释了为什么看到蓝光和白光的仓鼠比看到红光或黑暗的仓鼠显得更抑郁。)”可知,在蓝光中的仓鼠比在黑暗里的仓鼠更加压抑。故选B项。
31.What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed
A.Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.
B.Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.
C.Living or working in low levels of light overnight.
D.Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.
答案A
解析推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness”可知,在红光或黑暗中,仓鼠的压抑感表现得比蓝光或白光中的仓鼠少。由此可知,为那些工作到深夜的人的电脑屏幕配备更多的红色灯光能帮助他们避免抑郁。故选A项。
D
Body language is a broad term for several forms of communication using body movements or gestures, instead of,or as a complement to,sounds, verbal language,or other forms of communication. In turn,it is one category of paralanguage, which describes all forms of human communication that are not language.
Paralanguage including body language has been extensively studied in social psychology. In everyday speech and popular psychology, the term is most often applied to body language that is thought to be involuntary, but in fact the distinction between voluntary and involuntary body language is often blurred:a smile or a wave may be given either voluntarily or involuntarily, for example.
Voluntary Body Language is less commonly discussed because it seems unproblematic. It refers to movement, gestures and poses intentionally made by the person:smiling, hands, imitating actions, and generally making movements with full or partial intention of making them and a realization of what they communicate.
The relation of body language to animal communication has often been discussed.Human paralanguage may represent a continuation of forms of communication that our non-linguistic ancestors already used,or it may be that it has been changed by co-existing language. Some species of animals are especially skilled at detecting human body language, both voluntary and involuntary:this was the reason for trying to teach the chimpanzee Washoe American Sign Language rather than speech and perhaps the reason why the Washoe project was more successful than some previous efforts to teach apes how to dance.
Body language is a product of both genetic and environmental influences.Blind children will smile and laugh even though they have never seen a smile. The ethnologist(文化人类学者) Irenaus Eibl-Eibesfeldt claimed that a number of basic elements of body language were universal across cultures and must therefore be fixed action patterns under instinctive(本能的) control. Some forms of human body language show continuities with communicative gestures of other apes, though often with changes in meaning.More refined gestures, which vary between cultures (for example the gestures to indicate “yes” and “no”),must obviously be learned or modified through learning, usually by unconscious observation of the environment.
32.Which of the following diagrams shows the right relationship
①=language ②=paralanguage
③=body language ④=verbal language
答案B
解析推理判断题。根据第二段第一句“Paralanguage including body language has been extensively studied in social psychology(包括肢体语言在内的副语言在社会心理学中得到了广泛的研究。)”可知,肢体语言属于副语言;再根据第一段第一句“Body language is a broad term for several forms of communication using body movements or gestures, instead of,or as a complement to,sounds, verbal language,or other forms of communication.(肢体语言是一个广泛的术语,指的是使用肢体动作或手势进行的多种形式的交流,而不是作为声音、口语或其他形式的交流的补充。)”可推理得知,肢体语言及其所属的副语言都不是口语的补充,口头语言单独为一种类别;而肢体语言、副语言和口头语言都属于语言的类别。故选B项。
33.According to the passage, the reason why the Washoe project was a success may be that .
A.the chimpanzee Washoe can be taught speech
B.apes can be taught how to dance
C.Washoe can understand body language well
D.numbers of basic elements of body language are the same in different cultures
答案C
解析细节理解题。根据倒数第二段最后一句“Some species of animals are especially skilled at detecting human body language, both voluntary and involuntary:this was the reason for trying to teach the chimpanzee Washoe American Sign Language rather than speech and perhaps the reason why the Washoe project was more successful than some previous efforts to teach apes how to dance.(有些种类的动物特别擅长探测人类的肢体语言,包括自愿的和非自愿的:这就是为什么要尝试教黑猩猩Washoe美国手语而不是语言,或许也是为什么Washoe项目比之前教猿跳舞更成功的原因。)”可知,Washoe项目成功的原因是Washoe能够很好地理解肢体语言。故选C项。
34.Why does the author take the gestures to indicate “yes” and “no” for an example
A.To give us the meaning of the two gestures.
B.To tell us continuities of some fixed action patterns.
C.To show environmental influences of sign language.
D.To indicate genetic effects of body language.
答案C
解析细节理解题。根据文章最后一句“More refined gestures, which vary between cultures (for example the gestures to indicate ‘yes’ and ‘no’),must obviously be learned or modified through learning, usually by unconscious observation of the environment.”“更精细的手势,在不同的文化中是不同的,例如表示‘是’和‘不是’的手势,显然必须通过学习来学习或修改,通常是通过对环境的无意识观察。”可知,作者以表示“是”和“不是”的手势为例,展示了手语的环境影响。故选C项。
35.The last two paragraphs mainly talk about .
A.origins of body language
B.cultural influences
C.what body language is
D.relationships between body language and animal communication
答案A
解析主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段第二句“Human paralanguage may represent a continuation of forms of communication that our non-linguistic ancestors already used,or it may be that it has been changed by co-existing language.(人类副语言可能是我们的非语言祖先已经使用的交流形式的延续,也可能是共存的语言改变了它。)”以及最后一段第一句“Body language is a product of both genetic and environmental influences.(肢体语言是遗传和环境影响的产物。)”可知,最后两段主要是在探讨肢体语言的起源。故选A项。

At noon that day,I drove back to my house after the performance.Just as I entered the living room,I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favourite violin.
“Thief!”
I dashed upstairs.Sure enough,as expected,a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance,I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then,I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile.I asked,“Are you Mr Ram’s nephew,Michael I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago,I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come.It must be you. You’re really like him!”
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said,“Has my uncle gone out I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin,“Do you like to play the violin so much ”
“Yes,but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it.” the boy replied.
“Then,I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin.Going out to the living room,he suddenly saw on the wall a huge colour photo of me playing the violin in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate(装饰) the living room with the housekeeper’s photo.

Paragraph 2:
After the competition,“Michael” ran to me,holding a violin box.
参考范文
Paragraph 1:
A few years later,I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students. Fascinated by the gentle sound of one participant,I was whole-heartedly impressed by his wonderful performance and solid strength. As I flicked my eyes up to glance at the performer,I was so astonished to see a thin face,so familiar, yet now lit up with joy and confidence. The “thief”!For an instant,I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy’s misconduct would made such a big difference!
Paragraph 2:
After the competition,“Michael” ran to me,holding a violin box.He asked with a tremble in his voice, with his thin face reddening with excitement,“Sir,do you recognise me The nephew! It’s your kindness that enlightens my life,so does your violin.Today,I can give back this violin to you without regret.” Tears rolled up in my eyes.Never had I expected that a tiny white lie would inject such great power into others and change their life.

①=language ②=paralanguage
③=body language ④=verbal language
33.According to the passage, the reason why the Washoe project was a success may be that .
A.the chimpanzee Washoe can be taught speech
B.apes can be taught how to dance
C.Washoe can understand body language well
D.numbers of basic elements of body language are the same in different cultures
34.Why does the author take the gestures to indicate “yes” and “no” for an example

C.To show environmental influences of sign language.
D.To indicate genetic effects of body language.
35.The last two paragraphs mainly talk about .
