Of the total US population of 378 million, people over 65 years old now make up 20% for the first time. The senior ratio was only 4.1% by the year 1900,and 12.4% 30 years ago.The number of people above 65 compared to those of what is considered working ages, between 15 and 64,is currently 33.7%.This is up from 18.5% in the year 2005,which means that for every retired person there are now two workers, compared to four workers 30 years ago.The number of people above the age of 80 has grown to 23.8 million, making them 6.3% of the total population compared to 3.6% in 2005.

Due to climate changes,Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing. This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they have begun to frequent(常去) beaches, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The shrinking(减少) ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short distances between ice sheets. But as the ice has shrunk, polar bears have been forced to swim longer and longer distances in the open ocean. This poses a severe danger during rough weather, and an increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay,the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago.Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast(禁食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt.Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier.Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg.This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has dropped by 15 percent.Unless the bears can learn to survive these climate changes, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.

B.Their diet is changing.
C.Their health is improving.
D.Their families are growing.
答案B
解析细节理解题。根据第二段可以看出北极熊正常情况下吃在冰面上可以捕捉到的海豹,但现在由于冰的减少,它们只能以当地猎人捕捉的鲸的残余物为食了。
26.What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay
A.They are having fewer young now.
B.They suffer from various sicknesses.
C.They don’t need stronger protection.
D.They can’t find enough good males.
答案A

My mother,a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, worked at night so that she could come home in time to send me to school. She’d sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨).No matter how tired she was,she always had enough energy to be my mum.
She often had to work on Christmas,Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve,and sometimes Thanksgiving, which made me upset. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She’d also have cookies baking in the oven,a holiday-themed movie in the VCR,and music playing throughout our house for us.But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate.“Why do you have to work on this day of all days ” I’d ask sadly.“They need me,too, dear son,” she’d respond, compassion (同情) in her tone.
For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers.Recently,as my grandmother became ill,I found myself spending more time in hospitals. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked heart, blood and oxygen levels to make sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom.Beyond their duties, the nurses displayed consideration for each patient.
What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation.I was filled with more admiration for my mother.
28.Why did the author’s mother work in the evening
A.To take him to school.
B.To enjoy a movie.
C.To decorate their house.

A.The mother loved her patients more than her kids.
B.Nurses are paid double salary working on holidays.
C.The author wished his mother could stay at home on holidays.
D.Only people with mercy on patients will make good nurses.
答案C
解析推理判断题。第二段中的“She often had to work on Christmas,Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve,and sometimes Thanksgiving, which made me upset.”和“But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate.‘Why do you have to work on this day of all days ’I’d ask sadly.‘They need me,too, dear son,’she’d respond, compassion in her tone.”描述了作者的妈妈在假期或节日要上班,这让作者很难过。可知,作者想让妈妈在假期待在家里陪他,故选C项。
30.The author really understood his mother’s work when .
A.he asked his mother to stay with him during holidays
B.he looked after his sick grandma in hospital
C.he saw how tired his mother was after work
D.he helped patients to the bathroom
答案B
解析推理判断题。根据最后两段中的“For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers.Recently,as my grandmother became ill,I found myself spending more time in hospitals...”以及“What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation.”可知,当作者的祖母生病时他在医院的所见所闻,才让他理解了自己的妈妈。故选B项。
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Children of nurses are often dissatisfied with their mothers.
B.Nurses are particularly busy at work during holidays.
C.The author gained a new appreciation of his mother.
D.The author’s mother liked doing housework.
本文的主旨在最后一段“I was filled with more admiration for my mother.”。故选C项。
D
Walk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now,no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to solve global warming.Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year:equal to the total amount of CO2 given off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to the future climate change If it gets drier, will it survive and continue to draw down CO2 Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.
Unfortunately, collecting information is incredibly difficult. To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilised pollen(花粉) kept in lake mud.Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediments (沉淀物),which requires specialised equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths,or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes.Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样).So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon forest reacts to climate change.
32.How do scientists study the past climate change
A.By predicting the climate change in the future.
B.By drilling down deep into land sediments.
C.By taking samples from rivers in the Amazon.
D.By analysing fossilised pollen in lake mud.
答案D
解析细节理解题。根据文中第三段中的“To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilised pollen kept in lake mud.”可知,为了研究过去的气候,科学家们需要看保存在湖泥中的花粉化石。故选D项。
33.What is needed for drilling down into lake sediments
A.The latest helicopter.
B.The special equipment.
C.The light machinery.
D.The narrow path.
答案B
解析细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediments, which requires specialised equipment and heavy machinery.”可知,回到上一个冰河时代意味着下钻到湖泊沉淀物,这需要专门的设备和重型机械。C项错在light。故选B项。
34.What is the purpose of writing the passage
A.To attract more people’s attention to CO2.
B.To call on people to protect rainforests.
C.To inform people of how scientists work on rainforests.
D.To warn people to stay away from the danger of rainforests.
35.The best title for the text may be .
A.Mystery of the Rainforest
B.Climates of the Amazon
C.The History of the Rainforest
D.Changes of the Rainforest
答案A
解析标题归纳题。根据第一段中的“But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now,no one has reached a satisfying answer.” 故选A项。

Gift of Love
It had been a year since Safiya,thirty-four,became blind due to a medical misdiagnosis. She was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity.Although she had great self-respect and was a little stubborn, all she had to cling to was her husband Meraj.
Meraj was an Air Force officer and he loved Safiya with all his heart.Meraj’s military background had trained him well to deal with sensitive situations, and yet he knew this was the most difficult battle he would ever face.“How could I help Safiya challenge the situation ”Meraj was lost in thought.
The day came finally when Safiya felt ready to return to her job,but how would she get there She used to take the bus,but was now too frightened to get around the city by herself. At this moment,Meraj volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
Soon, however,Meraj realised that this arrangement was not working—it was hectic, and costly. And he found Safiya became more dependent on him,but each time he would like to talk about it,Safiya avoided it because she was horrified at the idea of taking the bus and crossing the streets alone again. She even thought it was a good choice for her husband to take her office and protect her forever. So,Meraj promised Safiya that each morning and evening he would take the bus with her,for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.And that was exactly what happened. Finally,Safiya decided that she was ready to try the trip on her own.But she was still worried.Meraj held on to her arm and encouraged her:“Believe in yourself! You can do it!”
Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday...Each day on her own went perfectly and Safiya had never felt better.Safiya was doing it! She was going to work all by herself! She was full of joy and confidence.
Paragraph 1:
On Friday morning,as Safiya was paying for her fare, the driver said,“Lady,I sure envy you.”
Paragraph 2:
After Safiya knew the truth, tears poured down her cheeks.

Paragraph 1:
On Friday morning,as Safiya was paying for her fare, the driver said,“Lady,I sure envy you.”“Envy me ” Safiya paused and said confusedly.“Yes,you must feel so good to be taken care of and protected by your lover.”The driver responded. He told her that actually, every morning for the past week,a good-looking gentleman in a military uniform had been standing across the corner watching Safiya getting off the bus, crossing the street safely and entering the office building. Then he blew her a kiss, gave her a little salute and walked away.
Paragraph 2:
After Safiya knew the truth, tears poured down her cheeks. On that night, the moment Meraj went back home,Safiya came up to him and said in a shaky voice,“I must thank you.It is your protection and love that make me brave and confident.I am so lucky for you have given me a gift more powerful than sight,a gift I do not need to see to believe.” Then she stood still and gave Meraj a formal salute. With tears in their eyes, they hugged tightly. From then on,their world was full of brightness and love.

Although introduced in the market only five years ago,10% of all hydrogen fuel now sold in the US is of the environmentally friendly Re-Hydro label, produced through electrolysis(电解) based on a source of 100% renewable energy.Several producers have turned to producing Re-Hydro,mainly because of lower tax, which also keeps the price of Re-Hydro on the same level as regular hydrogen. Most analysts believe that Re-Hydro will be the dominating fuel in the future.

24.What is Arctic ice doing earlier each year
A.It’s freezing. B.It’s hardening.
C.It’s melting. D.It’s expanding.
25.What is true of polar bears that are spending more time on land in Alaska

33.What is needed for drilling down into lake sediments
A.The latest helicopter.
B.The special equipment.
C.The light machinery.
D.The narrow path.
