In a country where many girls are still discouraged from going to school,Sushma Verma is having anything but a typical childhood.
The 13-year-old girl from a poor family in north India has enrolled in (入学登记) a master’s degree in microbiology, after her father sold his land to pay for some of his daughter’s tuition to help her to be part of India’s growing middle class.
Verma finished high school at 7 and earned an undergraduate degree at age 13 with the encouragement of her uneducated and poor parents.“They allowed me to do what I wanted to do,” Verma said,“I hope that other parents don’t make their children accept their choices.”
Sushma lives with her family in a crowded single-room apartment in Lucknow.Their only income is her father’s daily wage of up to 200 rupees (less than $3.50) for laboring on construction sites.Their most precious possessions include a study table and a second-hand computer. It is not a great atmosphere for studying, she admitted. But having no television and little else at home has advantages, she said,“There is nothing to do but study.”
Her first choice was to become a doctor, but she cannot take the test to qualify for medical school until she is 18.“So I chose the master’s of science and then I will do a doctor’s degree,” she said.
In another family,Sushma might not have been able to receive higher education.Millions of Indian children are still not enrolled in grade school, and many of them are girls whose parents choose to hold them back in favour of advancing their sons. Some from conservative village cultures are expected only to get married.“The girl is an inspiration for students who are born with everything”,said Dr.Bindeshwar Pathak of Sulabh International, who decided to help after seeing a local television programme on Sushma. She is also receiving financial aid from well-wishing civilians and other charities.

Have you ever made your life look a little more attractive than it actually is by posting truths on social media If so,you may be damaging your mental health.
The posts we make on social media platforms allow us to look back and see what we did on a given day.But what happens when,in an effort to impress our online friends, photos and videos we post become beautified versions of the things we did
A young girl named Sophia went out to a romantic anniversary dinner with her boyfriend, had a near relationship-ending fight during dessert, then came home and posted,“Had the best time out with the love of my life!”—even with a photo of the meal.No surprise, but according to a new study,Sophia was by no means unique.Two-thirds of users admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.
By beautifying our online stories,we are harming our memories. We start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really happened.Soon, the real experience is lost and all that remains is the beautified version of history.
Scientists fear that these edited stories will end up changing our memories. It’s well confirmed through research that our own memories are often unreliable and can be easily controlled.Writing down one’s life in the form of a journal,or even on social media can help us keep our memories undamaged, but only if we tell the truth. So recording our experiences through whatever medium,to later recall lessons we learned,is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back at our own past—however embarrassing or uncomfortable—is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.
28.Why did Sophia post her story with a photo of the meal

答案:B
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段的“If so,you may be damaging your mental health.”和第四段的“By beautifying our online stories,we are harming our memories.”以及最后一段的“but only if we tell the truth”可知作者对美化我们的网络故事持批判的观点,故而文章的笔调是批判性的,故选B项。
30.The last paragraph implies that many people don’t realise .
A.recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable
B.writing down our life on social media is no good to us
C.recording experiences through media is unacceptable
D.recording our experiences through media is beneficial

解析:推理判断题。根据本段的最后一句“In fact, looking back at our own past—however embarrassing or uncomfortable—is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.”可知,作者强调回忆不愉快的过往也可能是令人愉悦的,暗示了人们大多没有意识到这一点,故选A项。
31.What a lesson can be drawn from the text
A.Leaving others a good impression is desirable.
B.Editting our online stories weakens our memory.
C.Posting our experiences on social media is risky.
D.Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.
答案:D
解析:主旨大意题。全文主要是说明在社交媒体上美化自己的故事会损害我们的健康,因为这样做无异于在撒谎,欺骗别人就是欺骗自己,最终自己免不了受伤,故选D项。

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting.A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviours of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognise politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship.Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
32.According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by .
A.road conditions
B.the speed of modern life
C.the behaviour of the drivers
D.the large number of cars
答案:C

A.drivers should avoid traffic jams

C.unskillful drivers should be punished
D.drivers should show road politeness properly
答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段的 “Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.” 和第三段的“ However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.”可知,依作者的观点,司机应该正确展现道路行车礼仪。故选D项。
34.The underlined word “give-and-take” in the last paragraph means “ ”.
A.politeness and impoliteness
B.good manners and bad manners
C.offering help to others as much as possible
D.willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes
答案:D

35.What is the best title of the passage
A.Road Politeness
B.Traffic Problems
C.Bad Manners on the Road
D.Good Drivers and Bad Drivers
答案:A
解析:主旨大意题。根据第一段的“...but manners on the road are becoming horrible.”及第二段的“Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.”可知,本文围绕道路礼节介绍了一些不恰当的做法,最后提出文明行车势在必行,故选A项。

When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday,a particular picture especially touched me.A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home.A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast.Holding her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest,I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves.I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins,Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said.“We’ll share what we have with them.”
I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favourite things.Meghan watched seriously,as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.
Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh,Honey,” I said.“You don’t have to give Lucy.You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously,“Lucy makes me happy,Mommy.Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”
The boys had watched,open-mouthed,when their sister

I watched my children for a long moment.

参考范文
The boys had watched,open-mouthed,when their sister placed her favourite doll in the box.Without a word, the boys rose and went to their rooms and came back carrying their favourite toys to the living room.Surprised,I realised that the boys had also recognised what little Meghan’s action meant.I think all of them want to make these poor people who have nothing happy like them.Holding back my tears,I pulled all three of them into my arms.
I watched my children for a long moment.I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes, too.I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week.I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. What Meghan did taught me a lesson that the true spirit of donating is to give with your heart.

A.To make her post attractive.
B.To show her photography skill.
C.To convince others of her story.
D.To show how enjoyable the meal was.
29.In what kind of tone did the writer write the text
A.Encouraging. B.Critical.
C.Humorous. D.Enthusiastic.
30.The last paragraph implies that many people don’t realise .
A.recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable
B.writing down our life on social media is no good to us
C.recording experiences through media is unacceptable
D.recording our experiences through media is beneficial
31.What a lesson can be drawn from the text
A.Leaving others a good impression is desirable.
B.Editting our online stories weakens our memory.
C.Posting our experiences on social media is risky.
D.Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.
D
33.In the writer’s opinion, .
A.drivers should avoid traffic jams
B.strict traffic rules are badly needed
C.unskillful drivers should be punished
D.drivers should show road politeness properly
34.The underlined word “give-and-take” in the last paragraph means “ ”.
A.politeness and impoliteness
B.good manners and bad manners
C.offering help to others as much as possible
D.willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes
35.What is the best title of the passage
A.Road Politeness
B.Traffic Problems
C.Bad Manners on the Road
D.Good Drivers and Bad Drivers

A simple life means getting rid of many of the things you do so that you can spend more time with people you love and do the things you love. 36 It’s often a journey of two steps forward and one backward.
Evaluate your time. 37 What things do you do from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep Make a list, and evaluate whether they’re in line with your priorities. If not, remove them and focus on what’s important.Redesign your day.
Limit your communications. Our lives these days are filled with a vast flow of communications:emails, cell phones, forums, and more. 38 Instead, set a limit on your communications:only deal with emails at certain times of the day.Limit phone calls to certain times too.It is the same with other communications.Set a schedule and stick to it.
Try living without a car.OK,this isn’t something I’ve done, but many others have. 39 Walk, bike,or take public transportation. It reduces expenses and gives you time to think.A car is also very complicated, needing not only car payments, but insurance, maintenance, repairs, gas and more.
40 If you rid your home of stuff, you might find you don’t need so much space.I’m not saying you should live on a boat (although I know some people who happily do so),but if you can be comfortable in a smaller home,it will not only be less expensive, but easier to maintain, and greatly simplify your life.
A.Have a place for everything.
B.How do you spend your day
C.It’s something I would do if I didn’t have kids.
D.They can take up your whole day if you let them be.
E.However, getting to simplicity isn’t always a simple process.
F.Most people don’t know what “enough” is,and thus they keep buying more.
G.Consider a smaller home.
