It has been 52 years since Earth Day started in 1970. Held on April 22 every year . Earth Day is one of the world’s largest environmental movements .
Earth Day was created by an American called Gaylord Nelson . He wanted to give a voice to people who were hoping for greater environmental protection efforts . His idea was so successful that more than 20 million people went to Earth Day events on April 22, 1970. At that time , it helped to bring clean air and water laws to the US.
Now the global movement is still making more people realize environmental problems . Many young people and their non-government organizations (NGOs) have begun to make active changes . One of these is the Ocean Clean-Up . It is run by 25-year-old Boyan Slat from the Netherlands . The organization’s purpose is to collect waste from our oceans and rivers . Most of it is plastic . As we know , over 100 million sea animals such as sea turtles , dolphins , and seabirds die each year because of the plastic.
However , it is not just our oceans that are affected . Every year , over 15 billion trees are cut down around the world to make room for raising animals , growing crops , and humans . A Chinese NGO- the China Green Foundation -is working to change this by planting millions of trees.
Welfare Togo is also making changes . Togo is a developing country in Africa . It faces many environmental problems -for example , air and water pollution and desertification (荒漠化). To help , Welfar Togo has opened 31 schools , teaching sustainable (可持续的)development . It hopes to use education to create positive environmental changes in Togo .
Not all of us make such large contributions . However , through small everyday changes , such as recycling our waste , we can bring about plenty of changes to our world .
