一、用于指人以外的一切生物、无生命的东西和事情
1．代替前文提到过的东西或事情，用作人称代词。
2．代替指示代词，起着this或that的作用。
3．指时间、距离、自然现象(天气，气候，明暗)、量度、价值等。

二、用于指代人
1．指代说话者心目中不太清楚的那个人，常在打电话或敲门时用。
2．指代性别不详的婴幼儿或在不计较性别时，也可用it来指人。

（二）引导词it
(1)代替动词不定式作句子的形式主语。
(2)代替动名词作形式主语。
(3)代替从句作形式主语。
it作形式主语的用法
it作形式主语时没有具体意义，只是把真正的主语移至句子后面，以避免头重脚轻。移至句子后面的主语可以是不定式、动名词或从句。
此种情况主要用于“It’s no use (no good，useless，senseless，dangerous，enjoyable，worthwhile，a waste，fun，etc.)＋动名词”结构中。
①It’s a pity (a shame，a fact，an honor，a wonder，one’s duty，etc.) that...
②It is important (necessary，right，strange，natural，clear，possible，etc.) that...
③It is said (decided，expected，reported，believed，hoped，announced，known，suggested，etc.) that...

1．动词＋it＋形容词/名词＋(for sb.＋) to do 或 动词＋it＋that从句。其中，常用动词有：think，believe，suppose，consider，feel，make，keep等。
2．动词＋it＋to sb.＋that...，常用句型有：

take it for granted that 把……想当然

（三）特殊句型中的it
基本结构为：It is/was＋被强调部分＋that/who＋其他成分
一般疑问句：Is/Was it＋被强调部分＋that/who＋其他成分？
特殊疑问句：特殊疑问词＋is/was it＋that＋其他成分？
“not...until...”结构的强调句型为“It is/was＋not until...＋that＋其他成分”
