When we talk about positive thinking, we often use terms concerning our hearts—open heart, pure heart or joyful heart. But new research from Duke University is making a closer connection, finding that a positive attitude may be helpful to people who have angina(心绞痛), a common heart condition.
Symptoms of this condition include chest pain or pressure because the heart is not receiving sufficient oxygen. Patients who displayed optimistic thought patterns, including having positive expectations of recovery, were 40 per cent less likely to be hospitalised or require surgery than those who were not optimistic, according to the study. The researchers collected data from 2,400 patients who had been diagnosed with angina.
An interesting additional finding from the patients' questionnaires was that the most optimistic patients were a also the least likely to have histories of heart attacks, heart failure or other heart diseases.
The researchers did not declare a causal relationship between positive thinking and better heart disease outcomes, however. There are multiple possible reasons for the results of the study, including the idea that patients who are healthier in the beginning are more likely to expect to recover and regain good health.
But the study does represent a new way of looking at the situation. Now, in addition to a body of research that examines the relationship between depression and heart health, there is a new way of enquiry that asks whether positive thinking could be used as a strategy to improve the outcomes.
Lead researcher Alexander Fanaroff, a fellow in the Division of Cardiology(心脏病学) at Duke University Medical Center, told Duke Chronicle that his next research will find ways to improve attitudes among heart patients.
Perhaps his subjects could reflect on the words of the writer Anthony J.D'Angelo: "Smile, it is the key that fits the lock of everybody's heart."
1.How can people with angina get better according to the study
A.By expecting more. B.By thinking positively.
C.By getting timely surgery. D.By taking more exercise.
2.What may be the aim of Alexander Fanaroff's next research
A.To explore how to improve patients' attitudes. B.To find out the ways to treat heart patients.
C.To learn the causes of heart diseases. D.To test if positive attitudes help with health.
3.What can we learn from the text
A.Optimistic people hardly have a heart attack.
B.People's attitudes affect their overall health.
C.How positive thinking benefits heart health is unclear.
D.The reason why patients recover well is that they have no depression.
4.What may be the best title for the text
A.Keep Positive to Get Rid of Illnesse B.Angina, a Kind of Serious Condition
C.Depression, a Key Cause of the Heart Attack D.Positive Thinking Makes Hearts Healthier

一、阅读理解
A culture's values can be mirrored by its humour. Humour has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humour, and thought laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others. He thought humour to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists that humour allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious. I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humour is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humour as a way to express their feelings, how would Americans be willing to support the election Television shows like The Daily Show have become important parts of American culture. They are affecting the masses by unconsciously inputting politics into their minds. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humour. Social humour helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group The Pussycat Dolls, describing their hit song Don't Cha as a negative representation of women. He points out the obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University Maryland has shown that humour is one determining factor in selecting a partner. Among other things, people look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humour is not always used for good purposes. Humour can be linked to vulgarity(粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has the potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connections with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles(皱纹) to know that there is comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn't aware of. With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity.
1.What did Hobbes think of humour
A.It resulted in the narrow-mindedness of human beings.
B.It was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better.
C.It had the power to mirror personal glory and national values.
D.It made people view the world from another angle.
2.What is the author's attitude towards political humour
A.Worried. B.Disappointed. C.Curious. D.Appreciative.
3.How is the fourth paragraph mainly developed
A.By describing the process. B.By giving an example.
C.By comparing. D.By classifying.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Chaplin wasn't aware of being laughed at.
B.The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C.Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D.The author is determined to face life with a sense of humour.

一、阅读理解
The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的) outside." Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situations or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen in their everyday life such as when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.
Mr Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries around the world because people do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
1.Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes
A.The British often enlarge the fact.
B.British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
C.The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.
D.British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
2.How does the author explain understatement
A.By using examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By following time order. D.By describing a process.
3.How does Mr Bean make people laugh
A.By telling funny stories.
B.By making jokes about others' accents.
C.By copying how others behave.
D.By using his body movements and facial expressions.
4.What can be the best title for the text
A.British Humour in Comedy B.Humour in Different Cultures
C.Developing Your Sense of Humour D.Understanding British Humour

Long ago, there lived two brothers who were very poor. They lived in small houses at opposite sides of their wheat field. Each year the brothers divided the grain they had grown into two equal parts. Although they worked hard from sunup to sundown, they hardly had enough to eat. In spite of this, they were happy because of their great love for each other.
But one year, Simon, the younger brother felt a great sadness. He was worried about his older brother, Ruben. Ruben was alone in the world, with neither wife nor children. "Who will care for him when he gets old and can no longer work If only he had some money to save for his old age! It isn't fair that we share the harvest equally. But he will not accept gifts from me. What shall I do " he thought.
At the same time, Ruben was sitting under a tree, thinking deeply. He thought his brother, Simon, needed to support a family. "I have no family. It isn't fair that we share the harvest equally. Surely he deserves more than I! I must think of a plan to help him."
That midnight, Ruben went quietly to his barn(粮仓) where he filled a sack(麻袋)with wheat and put it on his shoulder. Then he crossed the field to his brother's house and secretly placed his wheat with Simon's.

The next morning Ruben was very surprised. How could this be Their piles were equal, yet each knew he had secretly given wheat to his brother. He thought that something must have gone wrong. So Ruben again filled a sack with wheat and intended to put it on Simon's pile at midnight. "I'm fully awake now and I must make sure I put it on his pile this time," Ruben thought. "Tomorrow my pile will be smaller and his pile will be larger, as it should be." Ruben still felt proud of his plan.
But this time unexpectedly they chose the same moment to carry their sacks. Halfway across the field they met. "Ruben! What are you doing out " cried Simon in shock and tried to hide his own sack. Surprised, Ruben dropped his sack. Then he saw Simon's sack and they both began to laugh. When they finished laughing, they hugged each other tightly. Their hearts were full of love for each other.
