Why China still needs Silicon Valley
https://n.com/2018/12/16/tech/china-tech-silicon-valley/index.html
China may be in the middle of a tech battle with the United States, but that hasn't stopped some of its biggest companies from expanding their presence in Silicon Valley.
Here's a look at what some of China's largest internet companies are doing in the heart of the US tech industry.
Alibaba
China's biggest e-commerce company employs about 350 people across three offices in Silicon Valley. It opened its first one in Santa Clara in 2000.
That office is focused on persuading American businesses to sell goods on Alibaba's various online shopping platforms, and on investment in US companies.
This year, Alibaba extended its footprint in the Bay Area with a new lab focusing on chip technology and artificial intelligence in Sunnyvale, the home of Yahoo.
Baidu
The company behind China's leading search engine is heavily invested in artificial intelligence. Baidu opened its first office in Sunnyvale in 2011 and added a major research and development center there last year.
The company employs about 200 people in Silicon Valley, working on artificial intelligence applications like simultaneous translation, robotics and autonomous driving.
Didi Chuxing
Didi Chuxing is China's dominant ride-hailing company.
The Chinese company's Silicon Valley team works on product development and safety technology for its operations in Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Japan, according to a company spokeswoman.
Like Baidu, Didi also has a permit to test self-driving cars in California, which it received in May.
Tencent
Gaming and social media giant Tencent was among the first Chinese internet companies to make a move in Silicon Valley, setting up shop there in 2007.
The company's Palo Alto office is close to the headquarters of Facebook, the US tech company to which it's often compared.

Huawei: We're still leading the world on 5G
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/12/18/tech/huawei-china-us-5g/index.html
Dongguan, China (CNN Business)Huawei is firing back against the US-led campaign to push it out of major markets, insisting it's still on track to lead the world in the introduction of 5G technology.
"Despite efforts in markets creating fear about Huawei, using politics to interfere with growth, customers continue to trust us and continue to work with us and build networks with our technologies," Deputy Chairman Ken Hu told reporters in the Chinese city of Dongguan on Tuesday.
Hu was speaking during a turbulent period for the Chinese company, one of the world's biggest makers of smartphones and telecommunications equipment. Its chief financial officer is under arrest in Canada, facing possible extradition to the United States, and its products are coming under increasing scrutiny from businesses and governments over security concerns.
Despite decisions this year by Australia and New Zealand to block wireless operators from using Huawei to build their 5G networks, Hu expressed confidence that the company's technology is "significantly more advanced" than that of its rivals, giving it a head start of 12 to 18 months and the ability to attract new customers.
"It's like a running race," he said during a rare media briefing on one of the company's campuses in southern China. "We are leading." The company is on track to hit its target of more than $100 billion in revenue this year, he confirmed, up from around $92 billion in 2017.
Even the arrest in Canada of CFO Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder, on allegations she helped the company dodge US sanctions on Iran hasn't shaken its resolve. Business operations remain normal and senior executives are sticking to their international travel plans, according to Hu.
"I was on the plane just yesterday," he said.
He declined to comment on Meng's case, but expressed confidence in Huawei's trade compliance system and in "the judicial independence and fairness" of the Canadian and US legal systems. "We look forward to a just conclusion," he added.
Irresponsible decisions'
Hu just arrived back in China from Europe, one of the regions where the company has faced renewed questions over the security of its products.
Orange (ORAN), the largest telecoms operator in France, on Friday ruled out using Huawei equipment in its core 5G network in the country. Germany's Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY) said it was taking the discussion about the security of network elements from Chinese manufacturers "very seriously."
Hu said he understands the concerns from customers and authorities, but insisted there is no example of Huawei equipment "posing security threats" in the past 30 years.
The company has risen rapidly in recent decades to become the world's biggest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment. Its competitors include Sweden's Ericsson (ERIC), Finland's Nokia (NOK) and another Chinese firm, ZTE (ZTCOF), which fell foul of US authorities earlier this year.
The US government has long been wary of Huawei and has stepped up efforts this year to limit the use of its products in the United States. American officials have alleged that the Chinese government could use Huawei products for espionage — claims the company denies.
The US government has even been urging its allies to stop using Huawei equipment, according to a report last month by The Wall Street Journal.

The Peanuts gang is ready for some new adventures.
https://n.com/2018/12/14/entertainment/snoopy-peanuts-apple/index.html
Apple has struck a deal with DHX Media to produce new series, specials and shorts based on the beloved characters from the animated world created by Charles M. Schulz, a source familiar with the deal tells CNN.
Apple has yet to announce the name of its official television service, the cost of its content or details on how it will be accessed, even as it builds a trove of upcoming projects.
As part of the deal, DHX, which co-owns the world of Peanuts along with Sony Music Entertainment and the Schulz family, will create short-form STEM-related content for Apple. (Think astronaut Snoopy.)
In November 2017, Peanuts Worldwide and NASA announced plans to collaborate in hopes of encouraging the next generation to enter the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
The Peanuts comics were first published in 1950. Over the past more than 60 years, the beloved beagle Snoopy and the entire cast of characters have become pop culture icons, and the television specials hallmarks of the holidays.
The deal with DHX is a major get for Apple in the children-geared programming space.
Competitor Amazon has seen success in investing in kids programming in recent years, with some Emmy-winners on its roster. In 2015, HBO put a "Sesame Street"-shaped feather in its hat with a five-year deal that gave the premium cable network not only new episodes but 150 archived episodes.
The deal, while criticized by some, was a financial lifeline to the Sesame Workshop.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Apple starts a new program
B. Apple and DHX Media collaborate to recreate the Peanuts gang.
C. Amazon has a new idea of the Peanuts gang.
D. The deal with DHX for Apple is a big success.

3. What can we infer from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5
A. Comic will be completely innovated.
B. DHX will operate new programs independently.
C. The content of Peanuts will have no change.
D. The new Peanuts will innovate on the basis of the original.
4. What is the relationship of Amazon and Apple
A. They compete with each other. B. They cooperate with each other in their work.
C. Amazon is an affiliate of Apple. D. Amazon has invested in apple.
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/30/health/live-longer-biological-age-intl/index.html
"In my lab, we work on a lot of different types of aging measures," Levine said. "One of the most recent ones is based on blood measures you get at your normal doctor's appointment. We basically take those and combine them using different algorithms to get what we call someone's phenotypic age or biological age."
Essentially, everyone has two ages: a chronological age, how old the calendar says you are, and a phenotypic or biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.
"People of the same chronological age aren't all at the same risk for developing cardiovascular disease or cancer or even dying," Levine said. "What the biological age does is actually give us a better idea of where someone stands for their age."
"Chronological age isn't how old we really are. It's a superficial number," said professor David Sinclair, co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School. "We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise and what environmental toxins we are exposed to. Biological age is what determines our health and ultimately our lifespan. Biological age is number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our cake than the previous one."
People with a biological age lower than their chronological age have a lower mortality risk, while those aging older from a biological standpoint have a higher mortality risk and are potentially more prone to developing the diseases associated with the higher age range.
But perhaps what's most important here -- unlike results from genetic testing -- is that these are measures that can be changed. Doctors can take this information and empower patients to make changes to lifestyle, diet, exercise and sleep habits, and hopefully take steps to lower the risk and improve their biological age.
1. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Levine works out different types of aging measures.
B. People have two ages, phenotypic age and biological age.
C. Doctors judge your age based on blood measures
D. People have two ages, chronological and biological.
2. Which of the followings is TRUE according to the passage
A. Biological age refers to how old the calendar says you are.
B. Chronological age is how old we really are.
C. Biological age determines our health and lifespan.
D. We may have more candles with advances in our ability to control biological age.
3. What does the underlined phrase “mortality” mean in the fifth paragraph
A. disease B. death rate C. lifespan D. health
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. People can change their Chronological age.
B. Doctors can change people’s lifestyle.
C. Doctors may increase the mortality risk.
D. Doctors may help people improve their Biological age.

(CNN)Women play starring roles in a flurry of films that will carry through the holiday season. But when it comes to the status of women in Hollywood, as Thursday's Golden Globe nominations suggested, it often feels like there's a step back -- or at least a pause -- for every step forward.
A shortage of quality roles for women -- especially older women -- has been a longstanding concern in the movie business, prompting many actresses to migrate to television.
Still, this year's roster of year-end films -- many chasing awards consideration -- has yielded what feels like an unusually strong crop of female-driven vehicles, although that enthusiasm has been tempered by the lack of recognition for women behind the scenes.
Notably, Roberts and Kidman have recently found lower roles in premium TV, in the series "Homecoming" and "Big Little Lies," respectively.
In addition to "Mary Poppins Returns" -- with Emily Blunt in the title role, expected to rank alongside "Aquaman" as one of the season's big moneymakers -- the lineup of holiday offerings includes "On the Basis of Sex," with Felicity Jones as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, recounting a landmark sex-discrimination case from her days as a lawyer.
Yet despite this series of actress-led projects, female directors were overlooked by the Golden Globes in that category, and none of the 10 nominated movies -- drama, or musical/comedy -- were directed by women. There was a similar shut-out this week when the American Film Institute announced its annual list of honorees.
The question of entire progress for women in Hollywood has lingered. The most recent edition of the annual "Movies Ceiling" report by San Diego State University's Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film -- released in January -- found "under-employment of women behind the scenes," and scant gains in 2017 compared to recent years, despite the obvious success of "Wonder Woman."
The challenge in focusing on projects that feature women -- including high-profile ones like Marvel's first solo female superhero vehicle, "Captain Marvel," which premieres in March starring Brie Larson -- is that emphasizing individual titles can obscure the larger picture.
After HBO's Emmy-winning "Big Little Lies" premiered in 2017, Kidman (who will also be seen this month as Aquaman's mom) noted that she and her fellow producer/co-star Reese Witherspoon "were frustrated because we weren't being offered the sort of roles we wanted in terms of complexity," developing the limited series "out of a desire to create an opportunity for ourselves."
In all, the aforementioned movies -- several of which were also directed by women -- look like the latest cracks in that "Movies Ceiling," and there's clearly heightened awareness of the issue. But after years of talk, it's going to take more than symbolic blows to break through it.
1. What’s the main idea of the passage
A.A step back for every step forward

3. What does the underlined phrase “"Movies Ceiling"” mean in the 7th paragraph
A. Limit in movies B. Latest cracks
C. Beautiful ceiling in movies D. An opportunity for women

The Peanuts gang is ready for some new adventures.

The deal, while criticized by some, was a financial lifeline to the Sesame Workshop.

https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/30/health/live-longer-biological-age-intl/index.html
