Almost all calligraphy(书法) lovers agree that writing characters with a brush and ink on straw paper offers a way to communicate with not only history and culture, but also oneself. But now Chinese character handwriting is under threat from computers and mobile phones.
A college graduate looking for a job was reportedly turned down by a company because he wrote 24 characters incorrectly in a 400-character handwritten resume. A survey by HorizonKey, covering people from 12 major cities in China, found that nearly one third of those interviewed often experience “character amnesia(遗忘)”, with 94 percent saying this is a problem for them.
The main reason is that most Chinese rely too much on the pinyin-based Chinese language input method, which is replacing the tradition of writing characters stroke(笔画) by stroke. The software will conveniently choose the right characters according to the context or word frequency, as there are dozens of characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.
Education is another problem. In college, most homework and papers are printed out, instead of handwritten. And few teachers use chalk and blackboards, with Microsoft’s PowerPoint the most-often used software to teach knowledge to students.
The number of electronic devices in the classroom is thought to be another reason why students are easily satisfied with just a poor knowledge of the Chinese language and characters. It is quicker to look up a character in an electronic dictionary, but traditional printed dictionaries offer more detailed information on the usage and meaning of the characters. Students pay more attention to remembering a character’s pronunciation, but not the other knowledge related to it, which e-dictionaries rarely provide.
Another worry is the “pollution” of Chinese characters by Internet language. Young people regard using Internet language as cool and fashionable. After they learn to use these expressions, they automatically include them in their writing.
4.With the example of a college graduate, the author shows ________.
A. that practicing can improve writing
B. why certain people are poor writers
C. that there are differences in students’ writing
D. why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
5.By saying “...those interviewed often experience ‘character amnesia’ ”, the writer means those interviewed ________.
A. are not good at handwriting B. can’t write characters accurately
C. show no interest in handwriting D. find jobs much more difficultly
6.What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5
A. Dependence on electronic devices.
B. Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C. Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
D. Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
7.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the Internet language
A. Favorable. B. Uncaring. C. Disapproving. D. Friendly.

Many travelers are familiar with the UNESCO's World Heritage List(世界遗产名录)However, less is known about the organization's List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of "serious and specific dangers" due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration(退化)of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.
For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and Neo Mam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have started a project, creating a series of GIFs to repair World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been protected.
Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually(虚拟的). It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.
In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally repaired to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls. Time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Thanks to these technologies, we can travel virtually, without leaving home, to those places that, whatever their future may be, will always be part of the collective memory.
8.Why did the team develop the project GIFs

D. Young people may miss the chance to visit some World Heritage sites.
9.What kind of endangered World Heritage sites could be chosen for this project
A. Natural sites that had standing elements. B. Man-made sites that had standing elements.
C. Natural sites that were destroyed completely. D. Man-made sites that were destroyed completely.
10.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. More sites on the list will be repaired.
B. The World Heritage sites will be in danger.
C. Technologies make virtually travelling more convenient.
D. Technologies help people visit World Heritage sites virtually.
11.What is the passage mainly about
A. An insurance company saving World Heritage Sites.

Normally giving food to wild animals is not allowed, but the situation in Florida with over 1,000 manatees (海牛) dying from hunger leads officials to consider a plan to feed them. “We’ve never done such a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered,” said Patrick Rose, the Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club. “This is a necessary but temporary measure. But I believe the impact is lasting.”
The emerging plan would involve feeding manatees at a Florida Power & Light plant in Cape Canaveral where manatees stay in cold winter months because of the warm water discharge there. It would be an experiment involving greens delivered in a controlled manner such as by a conveyor belt. “People will not be authorized to simply start throwing food. It’s illegal, and remains so.”
Manatees have long struggled to survive with humans, whose activities bring many harmful effects. Hundreds of the slow-moving animals are struck by boats every year. The accidents have led to no-wake manatee zones throughout Florida with violations (违反) punishable by significant fines. However, they are just responsible for a small part of the loss of manatees. The hunger threat has led to a record of 1,017 manatee deaths as of Nov. 19, 2021.
This has been caused mainly by runoff from farms, urban areas and waste that promotes algal blooms (藻华). Climate change worsening algal blooms is also a factor. And it’s not just manatees. People’s health can also be affected by the blooms along with the health of a range of sea creatures. Besides, there’s an economic loss for boat captains and sightseeing tour organizers.
“Actually, saving manatees is part of saving the ecosystem. If we take care, manatees will grow well. If we don’t, they won’t,” Rose said. “We’re in the most critical position.” Manatees were listed as endangered when the government started to protect them in 1967. Increased protections helped manatee numbers increase from around 1,000 to 8,000 by 2017 enough to have their position to be downgraded from “endangered” to “threatened”.
12.What can be learned about the plan to feed manatees
A.It is a long-term strategy.
B.It is carried out across Florida.
C.It is the first of its kind.
D.It is aimed at saving the ecosystem.
13.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 3
A.Human activities. B.Boat accidents.
C.No-wake manatee zones. D.Significant fines.
14.Why does the author mention the figures in the last paragraph
A.To prove manatees’ value in the ecosystem.
B.To explain challenges faced by manatees.
C.To encourage people to feed manatees actively.
D.To show the necessity of humans’ protections.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Wide-ranging effects of manatees’ deaths.
B.A special feeding plan for Florida manatees.
C.Growing food shortage faced by manatees.
D.Ecological crises caused by human activities.

She quickly packed a suitcase with a few items of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not return.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma. Nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
"I'm sorry. Do I know you " Eliza asked.
"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf.
