Each year there are at least five million people around the world who develop serious flu (流感),and almost half a million deaths. When someone we know gets the flu virus,we expect them to be very careful not to pass it on to others.Doctors and nurses working with flu patients also need to protect themselves from the virus. But what is the best way to do this This is the question that flu expert Professor Jonathan Van-Tam at Nottingham University is trying to answer. He wants to find out how flu is transmitted,so that he can stop doctors and nurses getting sick.
Van-Tam explains their method,“There are 41 volunteers in my experiment. Some healthy volunteers are made to get flu first. When they show symptoms, other volunteers, usually called recipients (接受者),enter the house.Everyone lives together in the small space for four days. Some of the recipients wear face masks, and wash their hands every 15 minutes, but some have no protection. In this way we can study who catches the flu and which ways of transmitting flu are important.During the four days when they are in contact with the virus, and for the ten days after that, the flu recipients are checked regularly.”
The experiment is not simple and it is very expensive. It is difficult to design correctly, and it is also difficult to plan and carry out.Just one study like this takes about 18 months to organise and needs hundreds of people working on it.But Van-Tam believes it is worth because the results will help to decide what type of protection is needed for people working in hospitals with large numbers of flu patients around the world. And perhaps it could reduce the number of deaths from flu each year.

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence,Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17,she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care.Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people.Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854,England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded.People demanded that something be done about it.A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So,in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.
She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.

Terry Evanshen was one of Canadian football’s greatest receivers. He played every down (进攻) as if it was his last.Though he had made great achievements,Terry’s memories of his playing days have been completely lost.
It was in the summer of 1988 after he retired from playing that his career in sales was taking off.One day in July,Terry,on his way home from work, had a terrible car accident. He was knocked unconscious, and within minutes he was rushed to the nearby hospital.
Three weeks later,he woke up.However,it became obvious that Terry’s injuries were far more serious than whatever damage had been done to his body.A lifetime of memories had been completely wiped clean. He had been all but reduced to the level of a baby;everything from his ability to talk and walk to his understanding of what it meant to be a husband and a father was all gone.
At age 44,Terry Evanshen would be starting all over again.Luckily he had the support of his family, helped by small victories and a renewed bond between him and his three daughters like when they taught him how to play football again.
In 1992,his recovery really began to pick up steam. It has taken years to rebuild his shattered (破碎的) life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days,Terry is a popular public speaker. He tells his story of perseverance (坚持不懈) and courage.“Never forget,we’re all in this game of life together. We will get to the finishing line, one day at a time, one moment at a time, but celebrate the journey.Seize today, because yesterday is gone and is never coming back.” As the subject of the most watched Canadian movie of 2005,The Man Who Lost Himself,Evanshen says his family has been his most important treasure. He refuses to be a victim, saying he is a survivor.

When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline(座机)
These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket.Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.
Still,55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones, according to a survey(调查).Of those Australians who still have a landline,a third concede that it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies.I think my home falls into that category.
More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone.Age is naturally a factor(因素) — only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years.Age isn’t the only factor; I’d say it’s also to do with the makeup of your household.
Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I,can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said,to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents,to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).
How attached are you to your landline How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries
32.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobile phones
A.Their target users.
B.Their wide popularity.
C.Their major functions.
D.Their complex design.
33.What does the underlined word “concede” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Admit. B.Argue.
C.Remember. D.Remark.
34.What can we say about Baby Boomers
A.They like smartphone games.
B.They enjoy guessing callers’ identity.
C.They keep using landline phones.
D.They are attached to their family.
35.What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph
A.It remains a family necessity.
B.It will fall out of use some day.
C.It may increase daily expenses.
D.It is as important as the gas light.

For many years,I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying,Mom!What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a kid,I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15,I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费).My hope of getting a diploma was dead,or so I thought.Pretty soon,I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so,I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret.I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day,I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That’s the answer,” I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening,so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said,“Mrs Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed,“There’s no way!I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done,I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,” I warned him,but he just smiled. So,I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway,my dream was still there in my heart.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
It was exciting to go to school again but

Text 3
M:Is this the check-in counter for Flight 814 to Los Angeles
W:Yes, but I’m sorry the flight is delayed because of rain. Please wait for further notice.
Text 4
W:I suppose you’ve been buying Christmas gifts for your family.
M:Yes. I bought tennis shoes for my son, but I haven’t decided what to buy for my wife. Probably music records.
Text 5
M:Kathy, I’m wondering if it’s going to be fine this afternoon.
W:So what
M:The football match! It’s due at 2:00, but the fog!
W:Don’t you see the wind’s beginning to lift up I’m sure it’ll be fine then.
Text 6
M:You were driving 40 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone.
W:I wasn’t speeding. I was driving 25 miles per hour. But there was a car in front of me that was only going 15 or 20. I think he was looking for someone’s address. I finally passed him. And it was just at that moment that you saw me.
M:You were going 40 miles an hour. The speed limit is 25. The fine is $ 50 plus $15 court costs.
Text 7
M:Here we are. This it is. I know it’s smaller than you wanted, but it’s one of the nicest flats in the building.
W:Does it have three bedrooms
M:No. There are two. The master room is quite large, though. Maybe you could let the children share the large room, and you and your husband could use the smaller one.
W:I suppose I could do that. A three-bedroom flat will be difficult to find. I’ve been looking for one over a week. The few three-bedroom flats that I have found are all extremely expensive. You said that the rent would be 350 dollars a month.
M:Yes. It includes gas. So, as you can imagine, electricity and water are very expensive.
W:This sounds better. But before I sign an agreement I would like my husband to see it.
M:Why not stop by with him this morning Our office is open until seven o’clock.
W:OK. See you then.
Text 8
W:Tell me exactly what happened.
M:Well, I was walking through the park yesterday when a woman knocked me right off my feet and ran off through the trees.
W:Can you describe the woman for me
M:Yeah. She was about 190 centimetres tall and wearing a white and black dress, a red sweater over it, and a pair of basketball shoes.
W:Hmm. What else
M:She had a heavy build, with long hair and probably in her late 30’s.
W:What was,uh,taken...exactly
M:Well, just my left shoe.
W:Oh, this man again! He often wanders around the park. He likes to remove the left shoe from men for some unknown reason and usually returns the shoe to the crime scene a couple of days later.
M:Hey, he can keep my shoe, and I’ll just take off my left shoe every time I walk through the park.
Text 9
W:Did you read today’s newspaper That building over in Centerville was just struck by lightning for the fourth time!
M:I’m not surprised. If the conditions for lightning to strike are right one time, they might be as good another time.
W:Well, I don’t take any chances. If I’m caught in a thunderstorm, I look for a building or a closed car. Also, I was told that if you’re struck outdoors, the best thing you can do is to keep yourself close to the ground and avoid bodies of water.
M:To tell you the truth, even when I’m at home, I don’t take baths or showers during a thunderstorm. And I don’t use anything that works electrically. Maybe I’m too anxious.
W:I wouldn’t say that. According to the article, lightning starts thousands of fires every year in the United States alone. Hundreds of people are injured or killed. I think you’re just being sensible.

Attention please, ladies and gentlemen,
Our bus is getting close to Cambridge, where we’ll be stopping to eat. We’ll have our lunch in the garden of a restaurant overlooking a small park that reminds people of a very famous tree. It’s said that General George Washington took command of the army in 1775 under its very branches. It was almost 100 years later, in 1864, that the city of Cambridge celebrated the event and from that moment on, the tree was called Washington Elm. Later the tree was attacked by insects and finally destroyed in a storm. The remains of the tree were cut down and the growth rings were counted to find out how old the tree was. Well, it seems that if Washington had accepted the command of his army under this tree he must have done so on his knees. This particular elm couldn’t have been over 3 or 4 years old in 1775. It is a well-known fact that Washington took command under an elm tree, but unfortunately it couldn’t have been the famous Washington Elm. Well, enjoy your lunch. Watch your step as you leave the bus.

第二节
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging.During the day,I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do.In the evening,I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school.I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Linda and I saw each other through the time. When I was down,Linda encouraged me.“Mom,you can’t quit now!” And when she was down,I encouraged her.I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us.But neither of us gave up.At last,I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.
