My 9-year-old son spends a lot of time on the computer surfing the Internet and sending instant messages to his friends. But I worry about him getting into trouble with strangers online. What can I do to protect him
—Brian
Simple surfing and instant messaging with friends are common activities for kids—and generally safe,if you’ve discussed some rules of use with them.Chatting with strangers, however, may be a different story.Although there’s no way to know the actual risk, the FBI (联邦调查局) warns that kids whose Internet activity isn’t monitored are most at the risk of being exploited (利用).
Keep the computer in a common room in the house rather than in your son’s bedroom.Take an interest in the sites your son is visiting and the people with whom he is chatting.Warn him never to give out his personal information (his phone number, name, address, school name, etc.),agree to meet in-person anyone he meets in a chat room,or share any photographs.
Urge your son to introduce you to any new“friends” he meets online and to tell you if he ever feels uncomfortable about conversations that take place. Most importantly, talk to him about the dangers of interacting with strangers online and remind him that people online often don’t tell the truth. The FBI also recommends that parents maintain access to young kids’ online accounts and often check their email.
Finally, you can use parental controls offered by your Internet service provider or through blocking and filtering (过滤) software.

Karaoke App Hits the Right Note
The pandemic has forced countless karaoke bars to close. As a response,a music platform in China has launched a new app to put the KTV experience in people’s smartphones so that they can sing at home.
The app targets the younger generation and combines a series of functions such as singing, scoring, and producing.Specifically,it allows users to remix songs and create something new.
“You can sing alone or sing with your friends online. You can also create your own stories or songs. It’s like writing a diary every day,” says the CEO of the company where the app was developed.
The company has attached two new functions—remixing music and discovering new talented singers—to the app in an attempt to win over more fans.“For the younger generation, they have lots of access to music from all over the world. They love to create and share their ideas on social media platforms,” the CEO says.
As of August 2019,the company had more than 800 million registered users and over 30 million songs.Due to its large user base, the company has got useful data to analyze young Chinese music fans.According to the CEO,not only do they love singing with the original version, but they are also enthusiastic about creating new versions with different music styles.
On May 12,2020,the company developed cooperation with an American music publishing company for the copyright to 1.3 million songs. It is the large and expanding song library that benefits the new app’s users incredibly.By taking advantage of it,they can either perform the latest pop hits or reinterpret classic songs.
In addition, the new app serves as an opportunity to discover new talented singers.“We want to establish a new connection with our users. The app will offer a stage for everyone to display themselves,no matter whether they can sing well or not,” the CEO adds.
About 160,000 indie(独立的) musicians share their creations through the platform. To further support them, the company will invest 200 million yuan in the new app to sponsor 100 indie musicians within three years.

Everyone who uses a smartphone unavoidably produces masses of digital data that are accessible to others, and these data provide clues to the user’s personality.Psychologists in Munich (LMU) are studying how revealing these clues are.
For most people around the world, smartphones have become an important part of their daily lives. The digital data that these devices constantly collect are a goldmine—not only for the five largest American IT companies, which make use of them for advertising purposes. They are also of considerable interest in other contexts. For instance, computational social scientists use smartphone data in order to learn more about personality and social behavior. In a study that appears in the journal PNAS,a team of researchers led by LMU psychologist Markus Buhner set out to determine whether data collected by smartphones (such as times or frequencies of use) provide deep understanding of users’ personalities.
The LMU team organized 624 volunteers for their Phone Study project. The participants agreed to fill out an extensive questionnaire describing their personality, and to install an App that had been developed specially for the study on their phones for 30 days. The App was designed to collect coded information relating to the behavior of the user. The automated analysis showed that the method was indeed able to successfully get most of these personality traits from their smartphone usage.
Clemens Stachl is aware that his research might further inspire the big IT firms for data.He says,“The potential of these applications—in both research and business—is very great. The opportunities opened up by today’s data-driven society will undoubtedly improve the lives of large numbers of people. But we must ensure that all sections of the population share the benefits offered by digital technologies.”
28.What do American IT companies use the digital data of smartphones for
A.Searching for gold.
B.Making advertisements.
C.Improving living standard.
D.Producing better smartphones.
29.Why were the volunteers asked to download the App
A.To fear the function of it.
B.To develop a new App.
C.To fill a questionnaire.
D.To collect information.
30.What can we infer from Clemens Stachl’s words
A.Big IT firms will turn to data collection.
B.More applications will be developed.
C.The digital data research will benefit people.
D.Only IT firms will benefit from digital technologies.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Your smartphone data can show your personality.
B.Smartphone data will be widely used in the future.
C.Scientists are doing research using smartphone data.
D.Scientists warns the exposing of personal information.

You don’t need to get in a time-travelling machine to see how technology will reshape our lives, such as the way we shop.Several new technologies that are to change your buying habits already exist.Let’s see what’s in store for your future shopping.
Try it on,virtually (虚拟的).Want to shop online for a new pair of eyeglasses You don’t need to guess which pair looks best on you — use the eBay Fashion iPhone app (程序) to try a pair of eyewear you’re checking out on a picture of your face. But what if you want to buy something bigger Thanks to Microsoft Kinect’s motion tracking camera, you can cover clothes on your screen body. You can even choose the background of your virtual fitting room to enrich your shopping experience.
Get a perfect, custom fit.Everyone’s body is shaped differently. To get a perfect fit,you sometimes have to get your clothes changed. But by using 3D scanning technology, all the clothes you buy will fit your body perfectly. Some companies scan your body using high-tech to get the most accurate measurements,so they can make special clothes just for you.
High-tech shopping carts and checkout counters.High-tech shopping carts could,in time,be a common sight in malls and supermarkets.Microsoft Kinect-enabled carts are currently under test. The cart can follow you along the aisles (通道),controlled merely by your movement and your voice. In China,a supermarket chain introduced tablet-equipped carts that guide shoppers around the stores’ aisles.
In the United States, several supermarkets use a device called Scan It that gives buyers the freedom to scan purchases on their own while they shop. While it’s great not having to line up at a checkout counter,we wouldn’t mind it if the store used Toshiba’s new Object Recognition Scanner. The machine identifies a product as soon as it’s placed in front of a camera just by its shape and color, even if it has no bar code.
32.According to paragraph 2,the eBay Fashion iPhone app can .
A.only make pictures of our faces
B.help us sell more clothes online
C.create us a virtual dressing room
D.choose suitable glasses for us
33.Which of the following can help get the correct shape of our body

D.Microsoft Kinect-enabled carts.
34.What can we infer from this passage
A.Checkout counters will disappear from supermarkets in future.
B.High-tech shopping carts will be widely used in malls and supermarkets.
C.“Scan It” cannot be used by buyers themselves.
D.The new technologies are only dreams that are impossible to come true.
35.This passage mainly talks about .

How does big data influence our life
Today big data is one of the hottest buzzwords. 36 Such large sets of data can be collected and analyzed to uncover information that can help organizations make informed decisions. 37
Thanks to data science, some industries have benefited greatly and accordingly, many facets of our daily life have been changed.
Transport
Cities are getting bigger, busier, and more crowded.Removing road traffic completely is almost impossible. 38 For example, public agencies use data insights to map out regular routes, create alternative routes in case something goes wrong, and develop intelligent transport systems to keep the roads clear.
Entertainment
We may not realize this, but the entertainment services we use every day, such as music and video streaming apps, are largely designed on the basis of big data. 39 At a higher level, big data helps entertainment production houses predict the genre of shows that viewers from different age groups want so that they can create favored content.
Finance
In the field of finance, many of the innovations that we now take for granted are resulted from big data.In the past financial services such as insurance and banking were built on an inflexible,one-size-fits-all mode, which meant not only that people with low credit scores were rejected in some ways, but also that clients couldn’t get what they needed. 40
Big data has influenced many other sectors as well, like agriculture, science, education, and manufacturing, and it remains to reveal its full potential in the future.
A.And this gives rise to big data.
B.A process like this is known as big data analytics.
C.But big data is able to assist in keeping it under control.
D.It refers to a large volume of data that come in diverse forms sources.
E.Now big data has made it easier to offer customized services to them.
F.The coming of big data analytics has helped launch campaigns and identify opportunities.
G.These platforms use data to discover what customers like most to offer them relevant content.

Last weekend,I went to Mark’s new house nearby a forest for a little get-together.After lunch when I was talking with him and his wife Cody,he asked me,“Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret spot ” Before I could even finish saying no,Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on.And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera,a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river.Breathing the fresh air,we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey!What are you guys doing ” Someone suddenly shouted from behind.Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running.I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud.We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down.I stopped to catch my breath and asked,“Who was that ”
Mark replied,“The most annoying neighbor ever.If he catches up with us,there’s no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us.I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes.“Wow!Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

Would you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman His name was Laurent Clerc. He, together with Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, founded America’s first school for the deaf.
Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, on December 26, 1785. He was born with hearing, but when he was one year old, he fell into a fire. As a result, he lost both his hearing and his sense of smell and the right side of his face was badly burned.
At the age of 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. Therefore, at his graduation, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher. Later, he was promoted to teach the highest class.
Meanwhile, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was upset about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf in America. Therefore, in 1815, he sailed to London to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. There, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf where he met Clerc. The two worked and studied well together. When Gallaudet was returning to America, he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted this.

“Help!Help!Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help. However, none of us could swim.Mark and Cody tried to pull me up from the water but failed.Struggling in the water,I was almost exhausted when I felt myself lifted by someone. It was Mark’s neighbor, who followed us there and saw what had happened.Without hesitation,he jumped into the water and I was saved.
