Every country has his own festivals to celebrate different things. Some festivals are more interesting than others because they’re unusual ---and a lot more fun! Here are just a few unusual festivals around the world.

It’s also a celebration of good over evil. During the festival, people throw coloured powder (粉末) and water at each other. Stores and offices close, and the streets fill with e____2____ crowds. It’s one of the most colourful festivals in the world.
The only colour during another famous festival is red. “La Tomatina” takes place in Bunol, Spain, in August. People come from all over the world for a big food f____3____. La Tomatina, you see, is the festival of throwing tomatoes! All over the city, people run through the streets throwing red tomatoes at each other. The streets get very messy, but everyone has a good time.
A____4____ strange and cold festival takes place every May or June in Peru. People celebrate with music and dance on top of a glacier! The festival l____5____ for three days, and people walk out carrying torches (火把) to finish the festival.
Finally, how about a festival with animals On the last weekend in November, people in Lopburi, Thailand, i____6____some unusual guests to dinner at the Monkey Buffet Festival. It is often said that when people go to a different country for the first time they experience culture shock’ because e___1___ is so different: the language, the food, the landscape, the social customs and lots of others! When I first set foot in the City of Leeds, England, I found myself in a c___2___ different culture from that of my own city, Guangzhou. For the first few days of my stay in Leeds I really knew about this so-called ‘culture shock’.
One problem I had was with the food. Obviously Chinese people are not used to the t___3___ of British food, but mentally I was prepared for that ‘shock’. The problem I actually had was with the names of the different types of food. When I went to the university canteen it was very embarrassing: When the woman behind the counter asked me what I wanted, all I could do was to p___4___ and say ‘I want this’ or ‘I want that’.
Something else which was different was the countryside. When I was sitting on the bus heading from Manchester International Airport towards Leeds, I saw through the window large f ___5___ of green grass on either side of the motorway. There were no crops but green grass and beautiful trees all the way. Now and then , I could see some sheep or horses grazing(吃草)in a free way in the vast green areas. What a beautiful landscape! You probably wouldn’t see such a scene in China c___6___ in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia because we Chinese use every piece of land to grow crops. As you know, China has the largest population in the world but very l___7___ agricultural land which supports about one fifth of the world’s population. We can’t afford to leave large areas of rich land unused.
I have given some examples of ‘culture o shock’, but after a few days I got over this and really enjoyed my stay in England.

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries: Have a look in your fridge: cupboard and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源)of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt You may be amazed how 75 food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate", is called "food miles". A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer's field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer. Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances
In the past, farmers sold their food in the local market and the consumers did not travel long distances, because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers arid consumers. However, there were some 76 . For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. They could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are 77 in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. 78 food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What's wrong with "food miles" Is this not a good way of increasing international trade I believe these "food miles" are 79 people for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global warming. 80 , food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journey. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it reduces the amount of global pollution as well. We need to buy more local food.

My father will always live in my heart- though he passed away many years ago. My earliest
m 81 of dad is grabbing his hand while we walked together. As I grew older, I remembered my father and me listening to basketball games on the radio. I always fell asleep before the game was over. When I woke up in the morning, the score sheet(纸)with the f 82 score on it would be lying next to me. I'll always remember that.
On cold mornings my father would bring his bread truck by the house. I used to ride on the floor of that bread truck as he delivered the bread to the stores. The smell and the warmth from the bread made my mouth water and kept me warm. I'll always remember that.
My father would be present at all my games. One night before an important game my father looked at me s 83 and told me that he wouldn't be able to watch the game because he had to deliver the bread and it was a three-hour drive. The next day as the game drew near I thought about my dad. I happened to look across the field and surprisingly saw his bread truck pulling into the stadium. He m 84 to make the game. I'll always remember that.
Years later I became a teacher. I'll never forget the v 85 on the phone early one morning telling me dad had just been killed in a traffic accident. I could hear my heart beat in my ears. I hung up the phone and went back to my bedroom. After that nothing really mattered to me. I still taught in school but I couldn't focus attention on my teaching. One day I was on the playground when a little boy walked up to me and grabbed my hand. His hand held m 86 the same way I used to hold my father's by the last two fingers. At that moment I found my purpose in life again. Though my father was gone, he left me s 87 I started. I'll always remember that!
D.Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(12分)
Dario and his mother loved their new apartment. The living room was large enough for their piano. One night, the two of them sat side by side at the piano. They played jazz music to celebrate their new home. The loud music filled the room and made them feel very happy.
The next morning, however, their happiness disappeared. Someone had left a note under their door during the night. One of their neighbors had written to complain about the sound of the piano. Dario's mother asked the building superintendent(管理员) if he knew anything about it. But he said that they were all nice people and he couldn't imagine any of them had done that. Later that morning, Dario suggested that they write a letter to their neighbors and apologize for their playing.
"Maybe we could go and visit everyone in person." his mother said.
"How about inviting them to come here for a party instead " Dario asked.
They both loved the idea. Over the next few days, they sent out invitations and prepared desserts for their guests. They decorated the apartment with streamers(彩带)and party lights.
In the end, the day of the party arrived. Some guests brought presents and flowers, and others brought desserts to share. One woman, Mrs Gilbert, gave Dario's mother a book of piano music by Chopin.
"I heard you playing the other night," she said. "The sounds woke me out of bed. I was afraid that you might play like this every night. So I wrote a short note. I hope you don't think I disliked the playing."
Dario's mother smiled at Mrs Gilbert. "I think maybe we should apologize to you." she said. "I didn't realize how late it was when we were playing. Maybe we should play some quieter music at night.
"I like what you play! Just try not to be so loud at night." Mrs Gilbert said. She pointed to the book she had given them. "These songs are not such loud music."
"These songs are beautiful music." Dario's mother said. "We will be happy to play them in the evening."
"And we won't play so loud or late!" Dario said. He was already looking forward to practicing the new music. More than that, however, he was happy to see the big smile on his mother's face. It gave him a feeling of warmth and made him feel that they were home at last.

VI. Reading comprehension (阅读理解): (共50分)
Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): (12分)
Almost nothing we do in this world is done in isolation (孤立). At work or at play, you’ll find yourself in groups, working with other people: your team at work, a meeting with fellow workers, your family, a holiday with friends, a group of students working together, a group of neighbors wanting to make changes. It is now realized that being able to work successfully with other people is one of the main keys to success, partly because we need to do it so often.
In almost every situation where you’re in a group, you will need a skilled leader. All groups need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak leaders almost always break down. Members of a leaderless group often begin to feel disappointed and helpless. Time is wasted and the tasks are not achieved. There are often arguments and nervousness between people as there is nobody to keep the goals clear. Often group members begin not to come to meetings in order to avoid (避免) more disagreement.
Some people are natural leaders. The well-known cook, Antonio Carlucci says, “True leaders are born and you can see them in kitchens.” They’re people who are strong, fair and humourous. Although a lot of people agree that there are some natural–born leaders, most people now know that leadership can also be taught. Experienced teachers can train almost anyone how to be a successful leader. Good leaders don’t make people do things in a controlling way. You can learn how to join others, encouraging the whole group to work towards a common goal.
Successful leaders also need to be calm and wise. They need to be able to work out good solutions and make perfect judgments under pressure. Lastly, and probably most importantly, good leaders need to be sensitive, confident and be able to get on well with a variety of people.

Isabel Allende’s novels are enjoyed all over the world. She is famous for her creativity and imagination. And her own personal story is as amazing as any she has ever told in a novel. Born in 1942, Allende’s family moved often during her childhood. She went to school in South America, Europe, and Asia. As a young woman, she became a journalist in Santiago, Chile’s (智利) capital city. Then, she got married and had two children. In 1970, everything began to change.
Leaving home
Isabel Allende’s uncle was a political leader named Salvador Allende. In 1970, her uncle was elected president of Chile. In 1973, Augusto Pinochet led a military takeover (军事接管) of the Chilean government. President Allende was killed during the fighting. When Isabel Allende began to fear for her life, she and her family decided to move to Venezuela (委内瑞拉).
From Newspaper to Novels
It was really a painful experience for Isabel Allende to flee her country. Without this experience, however, Allende says she never would have begun writing novels. Then she got a phone call from Chile. Her grandfather was dying. She knew she could not return home to be with him, but she wanted to respect him in some way. “I decided to write a letter about all the things he told us when we were young,” Allende explains. Later, he wrote a long letter which became Allende’s first novel, The House of the Spirits.
The Writing Life
“I spent ten, twelve hours a day in a room, writing,” Allende says, “I don’t talk to anybody; I don’t answer the phone.” When she finishes the first draft (草稿) of a new novel, Allende mails a copy to her toughest critic (最严厉的评论家). “I send it to my mother in Chile. She reads it and comes here with a red pencil. We fight for a month at least.” Allende then goes back to work until she feels the book is finished. “The storytelling is the fun part,” she says. “The writing can be a lot of work!”

Unusual Festivals
Every country has his own festivals to celebrate different things. Some festivals are more interesting than others because they’re unusual ---and a lot more fun! Here are just a few unusual festivals around the world.
Holi, the festival of colours, takes place every year in India, Nepal, and other parts of the world. Holi celebrates the e____1____of winter and the arrival of spring.
Hundreds of monkeys come to the buffet, where they feast (享受) on fruit, nuts and vegetables. It’s a great tourist attraction, and people from all over the world to watch it.
Unusual or not, festivals have one thing in common all over the world. They bring people t____7____, and they give them a reason to celebrate and have fun.

We need to buy more local food.

m 81 of dad is grabbing his hand while we walked together.
One day I was on the playground when a little boy walked up to me and grabbed my hand. His hand held m 86 the same way I used to hold my father's by the last two fingers.
