Chinese people have never liked a Japanese sports star before as they have loved Japanese ping-pong player Ai Fukuhara.
But now they may feel sad, as the 30-year-old player said on Oct. 21, 2018 that she would be retiring(退役)from the sport, “As a ping-pong player, I’m drawing the line here.”

When talking about why she planned to stop playing ping-pong, she said Japanese players were playing ping-pong better and better with her help and that it was OK for her to retire. Like many young people in Hong Kong, Lesley wants to lose weight. She stopped eating eggs and carbohydrates(碳水化合物), drinks eight glasses of water a day and only eats low-fat snacks. The food myth she does not know is that her “healthy” eating habits might not be good for her health.
Eggs are the enemy
Many people believe that egg yolks are bad for their heart. But this is only partly true. Though eggs contain a small amount of saturated fat(饱和脂肪), they provide us with 13 types of natural vitamins(维生素)and minerals(矿物质). You might not get some of these nutrients(营养物质)from other foods. So instead of avoiding eggs completely, it’s a good idea to keep them in your diet.
Carbohydrates make you fat
When people think about carbohydrates, they think white bread, rice and pasta are fattening. However, there are also “good-carbs”, such as beans, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and bananas. We need carbohydrates to give us energy.
“Low-fat” is always better
Like carbohydrates, some fats are good for you and others are not. Without good fats, the human body cannot get enough nutrients. The problem with low-fat products is that they are low in all fats including the good ones.
Drink eight glasses of water every day
Eight glasses is not always the right amount of water to drink for everyone because different people need different amounts of water. In addition, some people forget there is also water in food like fruits and vegetables. This means you really don’t need to only drink water to stay hydrated(含水的). Drinking water is important, but taking in too much water can be harmful. In serious cases, it can lead to water poisoning.
5.Which one of the following is true about Lesley
A.She does not know about the food myth. B.She wants to eat more healthily to gain weight.
C.She thinks that many teenagers are skinny. D.She is not drinking enough water.

A.you don’t like drinking water B.there’s poison in water
C.water is bad for our digestion D.there’s also water in fruits and vegetables

Trees produce oxygen for all living things. Trees help to clean the air, soil and water, making the Earth a beautiful livable place. It’s time to save trees and protect forests.
Saving trees around you
Every town and city has laws about protecting trees, and tell people which tree species need protecting and when and how it’s OK to cut down trees. In some areas, rare or very beneficial trees are protected by law. Knowing the laws in your area will help you better protect the trees there.
Take part in tree plantation
As important as it is to protect grown-up trees, it’s also necessary to think ahead and plant new trees. They will finally get tall enough to clean the air and help keep temperatures cool. Many towns and cities have organizations working to plant trees.
If your town or city doesn’t have an organization like that, why not start one yourself Tree by tree, you can make a difference.
Reduce paper use
It’s important to start seeing the connection between the trees you love and the products you use. If you’re crazy about saving trees, look for ways to use fewer paper products in your daily life:
● Use cloth towels instead of paper towels. It’s a simple change that can reduce a lot of unnecessary waste.

If you are always told you’re a genius, will it have any influence on your work Will it make you work harder and face the difficulties more bravely because you know your ability, or will it make you become lazier because you know you’re already ahead In a series of studies, Dweck and her team made experiment on 400 fifth graders from different parts of the United States.
First, participants(参加者)were given a series of puzzles to test their IQ. After they finished their test, they were told their scores and praised in different ways. One group of participants were praised for their intelligence and were told -You got X number correct. That’s really good score. You must be very smart at this. Another group of participants were told, "You must have worked really hard." The students were then given a choice as to what kind of test they would take next. They could either take one that’s harder than the first one, or one that’s just as easy. A majority of the children who were praised for their intelligence chose to take the easy test whereas, 90% of those praised for their efforts chose to do the harder puzzles.
While Dweck’s series of studies centered on children, it’s important to notice how having a particular mindset(心态)can influence you at any age. As someone with a fixed (固执的)mindset, you believe basic qualities—like-intelligence—are unchangeable. Since you are often praised for your intelligence, you want to continue remaining intelligent in the eyes of others so you shy away from challenges.
However, as someone with a growth mindset you believe the harder you try, the more you’ll improve. You are not afraid of taking risks, even if there’s a big chance that you’ll all flat on your face along the way. More and more researches support the growth mindset," Dweck wrote in the journal Educational Leadership.“Basic aspects of intelligence can be strengthened through learning and adventures, and efforts and persistence in the face of challenges are key ingredients in outstanding achievements.”
Dweck’s studies teach us an important lesson about success. A person’s intelligence can only take him or her to certain distance. The rest of the way is paved by bravery and determination.
34.What do Dweck and her team want to find out
A.The influence of praise on people. B.The IQ of each participant.
C.The best way to achieve success. D.The positive influence of difficulties.
35.What can we learn from Paragnph 2 and 3
A.Participant received three experiments in total.
B.Kids praised for their efforts later chose easier tests.
C.One group of participants was smarter than the other group.
D.Kids praised for their IQ later became afraid to fail.
36.According to Paragraph 4, a man with a growth mindset ________.
A.will go through much more failures B.is more likely to meet with difficulties
C.is willing to challenge himself D.is more likely to become an educational leader
37.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.give the reasons for the studies B.show the findings of the studies
C.describe the weak points of the studies D.introduce the methods of the studies

Poyang Lake is China’s largest fresh-water lake. According to the news on China Youth Network on October 9, 2019, there was a large land instead of a big lake. The lake came to its dry season, much earlier than before. When the land came out, it drew many walkers to the area. But fishermen could no longer make a living, and people living nearby faced water shortages.
You are wrong if you think this will not happen again. Two-thirds of China’s cities now face water shortages. And about 300 million people living in the countryside drink unhealthy water.
The water shortage in the world looks even sadder. By 2030, about half of the world population could be facing water shortages, said Ban Ki-moon at the Budapest Water Summit in Hungary.
Think about our children and our children’s children. We should try to make the world a better place. To deal with the problem, Ban calls on people to use water in a sustainable way. “Farmers should learn to get ‘more crop per drop’ by using good irrigation technologies(灌溉技术). And also, governments should deal with the problem with all other players, including everyone, “Ban said.
How can we help It’s simple: do not waste even a drop of water! For example, turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth, drink up bottled water before you throw the bottle away, and don’t pour out water that can be reused. If we can remember and follow this, we will make a difference.

I live in a flat with two large beds. I have clean water to cook my food and electricity to charge my phone. I enjoy my comfortable life. However, I often get bored with the routine and want something different. What life would be like without all these conveniences In order to get an answer to that question, I made a special trip last summer.
My family has a little house at the top of a hill. There is no electricity or running water. And there are only two chairs and a wooden bed in the indoor living space. It needed patience to cook with a wood-burning stove. Wood needed to be chopped (砍)for the fire. Timing was everything. We had to cook and eat early so that we could have enough daylight to wash the dishes. But this life without computers, TVs or smartphones turned out to be great. There was plenty of time for talking, hiking and enjoying the natural beauty. At night, I saw something I didn’t see in years—a big sky full of stars. I also slept better there. In the morning, my mum cooked breakfast. I could wake up to the smell of cooking. And I could enjoy my breakfast with the morning light warming my face. It was a nice feeling I didn’t have for many years.
It’s hard to say which is better—a life with all the conveniences or one without. However, I think those of us living in the modern world should all take a holiday from convenience and routine.

On Monday, a company called Rocket Lab used a plane to catch a rocket when it fell from space. Rocket Lab hopes to lower the costs of rocket launches by using the booster(推进器)of the rocket again.
To get enough energy to launch spaceship into space, a rocket may use more than one booster. Peter, who leads Rocket Lab, says that about 80% of the costs of a rocket is for the first booster. That’s why Rocket Lab is working to try to catch and use its first part of the boosters again. Saving money by using rocket parts again will bring down the cost of launching.
In the past, Rocket Lab let some boosters fall into the ocean and took them back, but the salty sea water can be bad for boosters and make them hard to reuse safely.
As you might imagine, catching a big rocket booster is very difficult because it weighs nearly 1,000 kg, but it worked — at least for a short time. When it began falling, a parachute was opened to slow it down. Then, the plane used a long cable with a hook at the end to catch it. This hook caught onto another cable between the parachute and the booster, catching the falling booster. So, the quality of the cable is very important.
This test wasn’t fully successful because later the plane had to drop off the rocket for safety reasons because the cable was not strong enough. However, Rocket Lab still hopes that next time the plane will be able to take the booster to a nearby boat.
50.The Rocket Lab tries to catch the booster when it falls from space because ______.
A.they can use it again the next time
B.it is very easy to catch the booster
C.salty sea water can be harmful for boosters
D.a rocket usually uses more than one booster
51.If the test was successful, the booster would probably ______.
A.fall from space B.be taken to a boat
C.drop into the sea D.do harm to the plane
52.To get to a success, Rocket Lab may use better ______.
A.planes B.parachutes C.cables D.boosters
53.Where can we find this article
A.In a plane magazine. B.In a story book. C.In a diary. D.In a newspaper.

Wildlife living in forests are having a hard time these days. People are cutting down a large number of trees to build houses. Some animals are slowly becoming extinct. That means that our fast growth might cause the complete disappearance of certain types of animals. Surely we can do something about this. But what is there to be done
The first step we need to take in order to protect endangered animals is to know their habitats and how they survive in the wild. Zoos can be good in certain cases and are sometimes even necessary, but this is not a proper way of life for most animals.
Our next step should be to set aside land for them. The third step involves protecting the lands we are setting, as well as those that are still untouched by human hands. Next we should move the animals into this new habitat and see how they adapt to (适应) it. We need to monitor their lives closely so as to be sure that they are learning to live in the area.
The final step is to teach people the need to protect the environment and animals. This can be done through TV, the Internet and school programmes that help children take part in this.

Nina, Jody, and Matt tried out the game they had been working on all week. When Jody hit “Start”, but nothing happened. “We don’t have time to make a whole new game.” said Jody. “The end of the Coding Camp is just two days away!”
The only things left were Nina’s computer drawings — a toaster, a toy unicorn, and a few houseplants. “How can we make a game by using them ” Nina wondered. After asking for advice, they worked on a new idea for their game.
“What about an arcade game ” said Nina.

How about the houseplants ” asked Nina. “Well if the houseplants are attacking the unicorn, she can spear them with her horn, the toaster can come in and burn up all the plants,” she added. They agreed and began to work.
After hard work, they finished the game on time.
On the last day, they showed their game to the whole group in the big hall. As the unicorn fought through the rooms, the houseplants got bigger. Just when things looked scariest for the unicorn, Jody called up the toaster to save the day. Everyone clapped and cheered.

In a village there lived a man named Henry. He had a wish to let poor people have meals at his home every day. But his wife didn’t like this at all. She thought it a waste.
One day, when he was on his way to another village, he met a poor boy. He asked the boy to have his meal with him.
He said, “Please go to my place. I will be back home soon.”
The boy got to Henry’s house. The wife naturally got angry when she saw the visitor at the door. But she thought, “My husband is not at home. I must make this unwanted visitor go!”
So she welcomed him in and gave him a glass of water. Then she started to cry. When the boy asked her why, she said, “It is my husband’s idea to let people have meals at home. Then he ties them and beats them with a stick (棍子). That is the reason why I am sad.”
