For some, rice is simply bought at the market, ready to take home and steam or boil. But have you ever wondered about the journey the grains of rice take before they reach your plate or bowl, or fork or chopsticks
Sowing the seeds
First, the seeds are sown. Sometimes, they are planted directly in the fields, but often they are sown in nurseries(苗床) where they spend their first thirty days putting forth shoots and grow into seedlings(苗).
Transplanting to the fields
After about thirty days, the seedlings are transplanted to the fields. Transplanting is exhausting, tiring work that requires standing in water and repeatedly bending over.
Harvesting
When the mature plants are in golden yellow colour, the new grains are ready to harvest. Sometimes farmers use a mechanical reaper, but often they use only a sharp knife or sickle(镰刀).
Threshing(脱粒)
Threshing separates the grains from the stalks(秆). This can be done with mechanical threshers or combines, but often the stalks are simply pounded(敲击) against a hard surface. When threshing is done without machinery, the rice is tied into bundles(捆) and dried in the sun first.
Drying the rice
Drying is very important because if the moisture(水分) content is too high, the freshly harvested grains will spoil easily. In many countries, the grains are laid out to dry wherever space is available, from basketball courts to sections of major highways.Wealthy farmers may put large quantities of grains into heated air dryers.
After that, some of these grains, after certain kinds of processing and transplanting, will end up in your bowl, others will be saved for seeds next year.
21. What will happen after rice seeds are planted
They will be kept in nurseries for about two months.
They often grow into seedlings after 30 days.
It takes a week for them to grow into seedlings.
It takes little work to transplant them to fields.
Which of the following shows the old way of threshing grains
Grains are dried in the sun.
Grains are tied into bundles.
Stalks are pounded against a hard surface.

Celebrating her youngest son’s first birthday in the Royal Children’s Hospital during a brief but “fairy painful and forgettable” five- day stay, Judy Browning thought that if she ever got time, she’d like to go back and get involved with the hospital.
So when the last of her five sons turned 12 and the volunteering duties at their kindergarten and primary schools began to wind down, July picked up the phone to the Royal Children’s Hospital and asked just how she could help.
“Being a volunteer in these areas can be fairly strenuous, so hats off to the staff who keep the atmosphere energetic and do a wonderful job to make it a very cheerful place.”she says.“It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that and to be able to play a small part in helping these families.”
Every volunteer at the Royal Children’s is allocated a specific position and Judy’s role as Family Support Volunteer means she is there to do “whatever families want and need”. From sitting with a sick child while their parents take a break to be with each other or their other children, to taking siblings(兄弟姐妹) to the playground, Judy’s role can be very broad and vary from week to week.
“For parents, just having someone there other than the medical staff to watch their child sled or to put their dolls back when it’s fallen out is so important. It means they can feel comfortable and go about doing the things they need to do like spending time with their other children or some shopping knowing someone is always close by,” Judy says.
“It’s great to be involved and I would encourage others to do it but volunteering is definitely a commitment and not something you take lightly.”
When did Judy think of volunteering in the hospital
When her oldest son fell ill.
When all her sons went to school.
When taking care of her son in the hospital.
When her youngest son went to kindergarten.
Judy’s job in the hospital is _____________.
helping patients’ families B. keeping children energetic
making the environment pleasant D.taking children to the playground
What does the underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
Exciting. B. Disappointing. C. Comfortable. D. Difficult.
Judy said the words in Paragraph 5 to show_______.
what she does is worthwhile B. children don’t take care of their toys
C. Parents of sick children are very busy
D. what medical staff do is very important

When we visit museums, we see cultural artifacts-from everybody household items to precious carvings and statues, which give us a glimpse into the diverse cultures and communities from around the world.
However, controversy surrounds these artifacts and whether or not countries should return these pieces of culture if they were stolen or forcefully taken during colonization.
On Wednesday, October7, 2020, the Dutch advisory committee officially released a national report agreeing to the return of cultural artifacts that were stolen from its previous colonies such as Indonesia,Surname, and islands on the Caribbean. Through these actions, the Dutch government acknowledges the unfair treatment the colonies had previously experienced and demonstrates respect for the culture of these countries.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, European countries such as Britain, France, and the Netherlands had colonized many African and Asian countries where they are now displayed in museums.
Over the years, European museums have received requests for the return of artifacts. The debate regarding this issue took a turn in 2018 when a French report was released that directed that all heritage objects brought to French museums be restored. With the official release of this report, museums all across Europe began reconsidering their previous policies on colonial treasures.
Those who propose returning these objects to their original homes argue that with technology enabling virtual museum tours, returning these artifacts to their homeland does not take away the opportunity to learn about them. Furthermore, the country of origin will receive a significant part of their heritage back, and these artifacts will be given a chance to be truly appreciated in proper historical context.
Those against the restoration claim that culture is shared treasure and the artifacts are in fact”cultural ambassadors” that promote tolerance and understanding. They believe that while stealing them was wrong, history is full of “good” and “bad” actors. Moreover, they feel that keeping the cultural objects in the current museums has kept millions of artifacts safe from disfiguration and damage.
What did the Dutch government admit
The colonies had been treated unfairly.
The colonies had stolen cultural artifacts.
The colonies had experienced cultural boom.
The colonies had been respected for their culture.
Which country played a decisive role in returning stolen artifacts
The Netherlands. B. France. C. Britain D. Egypt
Why do some people support the return of stolen artifacts
These artifacts reflect a culture of shared treasure.
These artifacts prove that the history is difficult to explain.
These artifacts will be enjoyed in their historical background.
These artifacts help people distinguish good history from bad history.
What is the best title for the text
Are virtual museum tours meaningful
Will stolen treasures belong to colonies
Do people appreciate stolen treasures
Should museums return stolen treasures
D
Nightmares(噩梦) are considered to be common among young children with incidence reducing as they grow older. They occur in the second half of sleep during REM(rapid eye movement) sleep. Those who have experienced them will be familiar with the feeling of waking suddenly with a sense of fear and worry.
Night terrors, a sleep disorder, differ from nightmares and occur during deep sleep(non REM) cycles in the first half of the night. A night terror is often characterized by a loud scream and the individual sitting upright in a panicked state, though unaware of any of the action. The violent and rapid move of the body and limbs(四肢) are witnessed in more extreme cases. Children wake up in the morning unaware of their activity throughout the night.
Professor Dieter Wolke explained, “We certainly don’t want to worry parents with this news that three in every four children experience nightmares at this young age. However, nightmares continuing longer than that period or night terrors that continue into adolescence can be an early indicator of something more significant in later life.”
A group of children are assessed six times between the ages of two and nine. The possibility of experiencing psychotic(精神病的) experiences in adolescence increased with the incidence of nightmares. Those who only reported one period of repeated nightmares saw a 16% rise, whereas those who reported three or more sustained periods of nightmares throughout the study saw a 56% increase in risk.
In contrast, problems with falling asleep or night waking had no relationship to later psychotic experiences.
Dr Helen Fisher, of King’s College London, added, “ The best advice is to try to maintain a lifestyle that promotes healthy sleep hygiene(卫生) for your child, by creating an environment that allows for the best possible quality of sleep. Diet is a key part of this, such as avoiding sugary drinks before bed, but at that young age we’d always recommend removing any affecting stimuli(刺激) from the bedroom-be it television, video games or otherwise. That’s the most practical change you can make.”
According to the passage, which of the following statements about nightmares is true
They happen to most young children.
They are common among adolescents.
They are uncommon among young children.
They will disappear when children grow older.
What happens when night terrors happen
People are not in deep sleep.
People suddenly scream or move.
People will have psychotic experiences.
People know what has happened when waking up.
What does the “something more significant” referred to by Professor Dieter Wolke mean
Good health. B. Good sleep. C. Mental problems. D.Sleep Problems.
What should be done in order for the children to have the best quality of sleep
There should be no TV set in their bedrooms.
They should have sweet milk before going to sleep.
They’d better play video games before going to sleep.
The radio in their bedrooms should be on when they sleep.

The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. That was not so bad: what really troubled me was that before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. 36 Anyway, who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. 37 Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of painting 38 .
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. 39 The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I could hardly take my eyes away from that painting! 40 It was really worth looking at so many painting to find a painter who could interest me so much.
In it, a woman was reading to a child.
That felt almost as bad as being in school.
The two paintings are so similar to each other!
I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made!
I was immediately attracted by the strange way of painting faces.
Staring at those pictures, I still couldn’t see what was so great about art.
Unusual styles of art always attracted my brother, but I was not interested.

The little car was crowded with kids: my brothers and sisters. We fought, debated and cried, making much noise. Being part of a big family was really starting to annoy me. For example, my brothers and sisters knocked on the bathroom door all the time. How I wanted to be the only child in my family.
As the car rolled down the small road, my mum said cheerfully,”The pool is three minutes away. You’ll have much time to swim.” Swimming was a peaceful activity. I could float on my back and look at the sky. I could pretend I was the only person in the world. Mum parked the car beside a small row of other cars.“One at a time,” she yelled before the car doors opened. Nobody listened.
The car doors all flew open at once. After pushing, yelling and crying, we came out. I quickly pulled off my jeans, T-shirt, socks and shoes, and finally put on my swimsuit.“Yeah!” I yelled as I jumped into the big natural pool with small stones on its floor. Cold water struck my face. I put my head under the water, which shot up my nose. After standing up again, I dropped backward into the water and began to float. The water sat around my ears, smooth and silent. The sun warmed my face.
I was like a leaf floating in a large pool peacefully. Everything was silent under water. For the moment, I felt I was the only child there. I didn’t have to share things like snacks with other kids. My stomach made a noise at the thought of food. Hadn’t Mom packed a huge bag of chips for our snack I stood up to walk to shore.
Oh! Dark sandy water suddenly filled my mouth and covered my head. The rocky ground was gone; I was pushed into the deep, dark water. I tried to kick to the surface. As my face peeked out(微露出) from under the water, I took a deep breath. I tried to swim and leave the deep water. But it didn’t work. I only knew how to float.
