Ⅰ、Analysis of the teaching materialsThis lesson is mainly about Aron Ralston –He lost his arm but is still climbing. This is a moving story, so it’s easy to arouse students’ interest. As we all know, interest is the best teacher for students.With the help of reading, grasp the methods of reading, try to match the main ideas with their meanings and understand the meanings of new words from the context.Ⅱ、Teaching aims and demands Knowledge objects:Words: climber, be used to doing , take risks, accident, situation, kilo, rock, run out of, knife, cut off, blood, mean, get out of, importance, decision, be control of, spirit Structures: Aron Ralston is an American man who is interested in mountain climbing. Aron is used to taking risks. This means being in a difficult situation that you cannot seem to get out of When his water ran out , he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. Aron tells of the importance of making good decisions, and of being in control of one’s life.Ability objects:(1) Train students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.(2) Encourage students to get out of difficult situations when they are in trouble(3) Cooperation learning.(4) Retell to make each student work in class.3、Moral objectsSs can learn from the spirit of Aron Ralston, be brave, be wise, be self-controlled and do not give up when they face any difficult situations.Ⅲ、Teaching key and difficult pointsKey points:Key words and phrases.Reading the article quickly and match each paragraph with its main idea. Step 1 Lead-in
Self-introduction and divide Ss into four groups.Reading prediction.What is the story talking about Warm up and make students pay attention to the class game—mountain climbing
Step 2 Presentation
Show a picture to activate students’ existing background knowledge and draw their attention to the topic of the reading. Tell students the rules of a reading game, and ask them to try their best to answer the most questions, and be the first one to reach the top. Get more information from pictures.Introduce the rules of a reading game, and encourage more students to join in the class.
Step 3 Before Reading
1. Introduce Aron Ralston, a real mountain climber—the writer of Between a Rock and A hard Place, Aron’s experience was taken into a movie called <<127 Hours>>.2. Show a short video about the story and let Ss answer the question. students get more information about Aron. The video attracts students’ attention to read more.
Step 3 Fast Reading
1. Show the main idea of each paragraph, ask students to look through the passage quickly, try to match the paragraphs with their main ideas. Train the fast reading skill with answering some questions, ask students to match the paragraphs with their main ideas.
Step 4 Detailed Reading
Ask students to read the passage carefully. Analysis each paragraph in different reading skills.1. Para 1. Ask students to listen and fill in the blanks.Ask students a question “What do you think of Aron ” to summarize the spirit of Aron Ralston.2. Para 2. Ask students to read in details and fill in the chart.Ask Ss to pay attention to the words “First Then At last”. Lead the reading strategy. Para 3.Show a video about the ending of the story and ask a student to answer the question “What did Aron do after the accident ” Ask Ss to read the Para3 together and then find out the answers to the questions in Para3.Ask students a question “What do you think of Aron ” to summarize the spirit of Aron Ralston.4. Para 4. Help students to find out the spirit of Aron Ralston.5. Moral education Ss can learn from the spirit of Aron Ralston, be brave, be wise, be self-controlled and do not give up when they face any difficult situations.6. After reading, Look back at the question I showed at the beginning of the class “What is the story talking about to get the real purpose of the writer. Read the passages again and ask students to answer some questions, encourage students to understand the details from the passages.Students are interested in the climbing game, and try their best to take more steps to the top.Ask students to try to find out the answers to the questions from the context. Step5 Retell
1. Ask students to put the sentences in the correct order2. Ask students to retell the passages according to the blanks, Retelling is a good way to remember the details, it can help them to understand what you are reading.3. Ss try to write a short story by using the words in black after class. Students can retell the three passages, and try to train their speaking skills.Students can write a short story after class and try to train their writing skills.
Step6 Summary, Self-check
1. Summary: (1). Have a summary of the main ideas of the passage.(2). Have a summary of the structure of the passage; tell them it can help them to understand what you are reading.2. Self-check(1). Ask students to check themselves about this class.(2). If they have some difficulties, be brave, be wise, be self--controlled and do not give up in our life.
