a. Be able to learn the passage cooperatively and independently.

Step 1. Warming upAsk the students this question:What were you doing when I came in just now Help them to answer with when/while, and revise the past progressive tense. To review “when” and” while”.To call the students’ attention.
Step 2.leading inShow the picture of Wenchuan Earthquake monument, and ask these questions:What’s on the screen What’s on the stones What happened To get the students interested in the teaching activity. Tell my experiences to the students in order to set an example for the students about events.
Step 3.SkimmingAsk the students to skim the passage on Page 38,and answer this question: How many events are mentioned in the passage Then check the answer. To get information by reading. To practice the reading skill “skimming”.
Step 4.ScanningRead the first two paragraphs and fill in the chart.Read the last two paragraphs and fill in the chart.Check the answers. .To get information by reading. .To practice the reading skill “scanning”. .To solve the new words: be killed, be completely shocked, be taken down, be scared.
Step 5.Detailed readingGet the students to read the passage carefully, and finish the following tasks.Are the following statements in 2c true, false, or not given.Find the sentences with similar meanings to the ones in 2d. To get information by reading. To practice the reading skill “detailed reading”. To explain the important words, phrases and sentences from the tasks. hit, in silence, date, have meaning to sb, and have trouble doing.
Step 6.listening and discussionListen to the tape and underline the words and phrases you don’t understand, then discuss them in group of four. Cooperation and self- learning
Step 7.QuizMatch the English words with the Chinese meanings. To check the new words.
Step 8.RetellingRevise the answers to the Wh- questions in Step 4, and retell the two events in the passage. If possible, add more events in the Chinese history. Focus on what, when, where , who and how. To practice speaking and writing.
