Finding a New Place
Max is new in town. His family just moved into a new apartment. Max would like to meet some people. Max asked the landlord (房东) where he might go to meet people of his own age.
“The Community Center is for people of your age. I am sure you could find some friends there,” said the landlord. “Is the Community Center far from here ” Max asked. “No. It’s only a few blocks away. It’s about a ten-minute walk from here,” replied the landlord. “Give me a minute, I’ll write down the directions.”
Max smiled. He hoped that he would make some friends at the Community Center.
The landlord gave Max a note. Max read the words on the note:
Walk out the front door of the building. Go west on Main Street till you get to the park. Then, walk north on Taylor Street for one block. The Community Center is on the right, near the Town Hall.
Max’s smile disappeared. He would never be able to find the Community Center because he didn’t know how to follow directions that used words like “north” and “west”.
Max needs to get a map of his neighborhood. This map could help him find directions. He took the directions and the map from his landlord. He was sure he could find the Community Center. The landlord told Max that the front door of his building faces west.
When he came out of his building, he walked west on the Main Street until he came to the park.
Taylor Street was right next to the park. He looked at his direction note. It said, “Then, walk north on Taylor Street for one block.”
Max looked at the map. He could tell that if he was facing west, north would be on his right. He turned to the right on Taylor Street. He walked one block. He could see a big building with a sign. It said “Community Center”. He found it!

On a June afternoon in 1752, the sky began to get dark over the city. As the storm broke, most people surely hurried inside, but not Benjamin Franklin. He decided it was the perfect time to fly a kite. Franklin had been waiting for a chance like this. He wanted to show the connection between lightning (闪电) and electricity, and to do so, he needed a storm.
He walked into a field, and flew a kite with a piece of rope tied to it. A key was tied to the rope. The lightning hit the kite, and electricity passed through the rope to the key. Franklin then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock (电击). This, he said, proved (证明) the electrical nature of lightning.
For many years, schools have taught the story of Franklin’s experiment. Millions of schoolchildren have been amazed by his courage and his scientific spirit of looking for the truth. However, new research suggests that the story may be fiction instead of fact. Although Franklin’s experiment took place, more than one scientist has questioned what really happened. It’s true that he did the experiment with the rope and the key. But scientists all agree that if Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the electric shock.
Scientists often question accepted ideas because they want to find out the facts. Some have even questioned the story about the apple that fell on Newton’s head. Many reports suggest that although the falling apple certainly provided ideas, there is nothing to show that the apple actually hit him on the head.
In fact, fiction is often more interesting than the truth. People have been more encouraged by Franklin’s spirit than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be tested by experiments and research, and we should not always believe everything we read or hear—even if it is a great story.
24. Franklin did the experiment in order to prove ______.
A. he was an excellent scientist B. flying a kite in the storm was safe
C. he was not afraid of lightning D. lightning was a form of electricity
25. The underlined word “fiction” probably means something ______.
A. not true B. quite different
C. not safe D. quite necessary
26. Some scientists questioned whether Franklin ______ in the experiment.
A. flew a kite B. touched the key
C. was present D. discovered electricity

②Reporter: What was your life like in the past
③Mrs Li: My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a postman, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn’t go out to work. There were five
children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job.

We grow up in change. Growth makes our life full of meaning. Looking back on the three years of junior high school, I have experienced many changes in my study, thought, character, life and so on.
The biggest personal change I’ve ever made is that I have fallen in love with reading. When I was a child, I didn’t enjoy books at all. Later, my mother always read stories to me and bought me books. Gradually I began to love reading. While reading, I feel like talking with a wise man. Reading is also a fantastic way to enjoy my free time.
Books are my friends. And they will benefit me a lot.
