一、阅读理解
You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It's the idea that if children or even babies listen to music written by Mozart (or other classical music), they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals(显示) plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart's music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you cleverer, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase "the Mozart effect" was made up in 1991, but it was a study published two years later in the journal Nature that aroused real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.
The idea caught on, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the State of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart's music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them produce better milk.
I'll leave the debate(辩论) on the impact on milk yield(产量) to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent.

Why People Collect Art
Many people through history have gone to great lengths to collect art. But what motivates these collectors
One popular explanation for collecting is that they can have financial gain. Some resell works, earning enormous profit. ____1_____ Immorally, some "collectors" buy art as a form of money laundering (洗钱), since it is far easier to move art than cash between countries without examination.
____2_____ For them, art is important for other reasons. The best way to understand the underlying drive of art collecting is as a means to create and strengthen social bonds, and as a way for collectors to communicate within these new networks.
Collectors are not only interested in creating social links; they are also motivated by the messages they can send once these social networks are created. We all know art is a powerful way for the artists to express thoughts and feelings. ____3_____ Displaying art can send a message about who the collector really is—at least who she sees herself as.
_____4____ Through the collections, collectors convey messages not just about themselves, but about the world as a whole. For example, a kid with a shoebox of bird feathers might show others her collection not just to make friends, but also to convince them about the importance of protecting endangered species.
People collect art for various reasons. ____5_____
A. Some gain art works in an illegal way.
B. But most collectors think little of profit.
C. Artworks preserve the qualities of their makers.
D. No doubt art collection is a hard addiction to overcome.
E. Some get large tax reductions for donating art to museums.
F. It also serves as an effective way to express collectors.
G. Other art collectors see their collections as having broader power.

School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, "It's time to rise!" It was Mom's loudest voices, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it Did Mom forget to make or buy it Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it's no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, "Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch "
Mom answered, "Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting it, then who is "
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (壁橱) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl—the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down (盖紧), so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem. After some thinking, my mother said she was going to put two packages of goodies in my lunch: one for me and the other one for Carl. And then I put my lunch bag in the classroom closet as usual. One day, Carl stopped me and asked why there were always two desserts in my lunches. I told him that one was for him. He was surprised.
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother. I told him that he would be welcome at our house as long as he did not steal anything and did not fight or swear. He agreed. After that, Carl would come to our house every day after school and we enjoyed our time together playing games. I learned a lifelong lesson from Mom about how to treat others.
