Teaching aims:
To learn to write a detective story
Note: Pay attention to describing the crime and criminal(s).Give some description of the suspect and the plot (情节) etc.
Teaching procedure
Step 1 Read and match
1.Teach new words
2. Millie has entered the school writing competition. She has drawn some pictures to help her plan her story. Help her label the pictures. Write the correct letters in the boxes.
a A witness saw someone running into Bruce’s building.
b Bruce planned to take the necklace to the police station the next day.
c One day, Bruce found a gold necklace outside his door.
d Bruce was charged with theft.

Step 2 Complete the article
1. Complete the article according to the information.
2. Check the answers.

A.Read the article again and answer the questions.

Think of a possible ending!

Step 4 Outline
1.Analysis the structure of the article. (Background, Mainbody,Conclusion)
2.Remember to include these points in your story.
1)A description of the crime / any objects or clues/ the suspect
2)How the detective finds the criminal
3. How to write a detective story :
1)complete content (Background, Mainbody,Conclusion)
2)Rich detail descriptions (thoughts;feelings;action;words )
4. Look at the pictures and complete the part C.
You also want to enter a writing competition at school. You have drawn some pictures. Now write your own detective story using the pictures, or write an ending to Millie’s story.
5. Answer the questions according to the pictures.
1) Who do you think was murdered, a man or a woman
2) What were the young couple doing
3) How was he killed
4) What will the policeman do
5) Who do you think is guilty
Keys: A man was murdered.
They were having a party.
He was killed by a knife or a gun.
He will check the knife and the gun for fingerprints.
I think the cook is guilty.

1. Bruce got along with all of his neightbours except the man who lived next door.

get along / on (with someboby) (与某人)和睦相处，关系良好
e.g. He has never really got on with his flatmates.

2. No one knows what he does for a living.

do…for a living “做…为生”。 make a living“谋生”。
e.g. His uncle used to repair clocks for a living.
他叔叔过去靠修钟表为生。
3. You’re under arrest for murder.
be under arrest for 因为…而被逮捕
e.g. He was under arrest for murder.
他因为谋杀而被逮捕。
