Step Ⅰ Lead-in
T: Do you remember in Unit 6 we have learned a horror film called “Murder in a Country House”
Ask: Can you tell me the main idea of this film
( A doctor is found dead in his house. People don’t know whether he was killed or he killed himself. )
T: Good. The doctor in this film is a victim. If he was killed by someone, that is a murder. And the person who killed the doctor is the murderer. The murderer killed the man, and he broke the law, so his act is a kind of crime, and he is the criminal. If we find a man, but we are not sure whether he is the murderer, we can call him a suspect.
Present the words.
Ask: If there is a murder, who will solve it ( The police.)
T: Yes, a person, especially a police officer, whose job is to examine crimes and catch criminals is a detective(n.). So “ Murder in a Country House” is not only a horror film, but also a film about detective(adj.) stories.
Write down these words on the blackboard, and ask students to read together. Ask students to pay attention the word “detective”( n.&adj.)
Step Ⅱ Comic strip
1. Presentation.
T: Do you like reading detective stories Who is the famous detective in the novels
( Sherlock Holmes.)
Show the picture of Sherlock Holmes, and describe the picture.
Sherlock Holmes is a famous detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle. He is very clever and has a wide knowledge of different things.
( Talk about his special dressing with his magnifying glass and the pipe.)
T: Today, Eddie is dressed like that. Let’s see what happened.
2. Listen to the tape and answer some questions:
1) Why is Eddie dressed like that ( Because he is a detective.)
2) What does a detective do (A detective is someone who look for clues to something important.)
3) What happened A murder (No. Eddie’s food has gone missing.)
4) Do you think Eddie is a real detective (No, I do not think he is a real detective.)
3. Check the answers by asking students.
4. Repeat the dialogue after the tape. Pay attention to your pronunciation and intonation.
5. Explain some language points.
6. Ask some pairs to act out the dialogue.
Step Ⅲ Welcome to the unit (Part A)
1. Presentation
T: Do you want to be a detective How to be a detective Here is a chance for you to try.
The Class1, Grade 9 students are playing a game about guessing who is the murder. We can try together.
2. Show the police’s report to students. Ask one student to read. Tell students that we can know the time, the place, the victim and the notes of the suspects from the report.
3. Look at the information of four suspects together and ask some questions about it. Teach some new words at the same time. Try to explain the meanings of these words in English.
4. Discuss the details in groups of four by using the following questions.
(1) What happened (A young man was murdered.)
(2) When was he murdered (He was murdered last Saturday night at 8 p.m.)
(3) Where did it happen (It happened in Sun Town.)
(4) Who murdered the young man (The murderer has not been found yet.)
(5) What is James Brown (He is a doctor.)
(6) Where was Jimmy White last Saturday (He was in New Town.)
(7) Where does Emily Smith live (She lives in Star Town.)
(8) What is Frank Johnson’s appearance and personality (He is of medium height and untidy. He is nervous.)
5. Try to analyse each suspect in different ways.
Step Ⅳ Discussion (Part B)
1. Daniel and Sandy are talking about the murder in Sun Town. Listen to their conversation and answer the questions.
(1) Who does Sandy think is most likely to be the murderer Why
(Jimmy White. Because he lives in Sun Town.)
(2) Who does Daniel think is most likely to be the murderer (Frank Johnson.)
2. Ask several pairs to read the conversation.
3. Discuss in pairs : Who do you think is most likely to be the murderer
Try to tell others your reasons.
