At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington, Kentucky, US, old-fashioned
houses look over the little red barn (畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now. Jim Mahan and his family, who lived
there for generations, have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go
up where there once were fields.
But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They’re members
of the Fayette County Livestock (FCL) Club, which showcases (展示) various skills. The barn is where they look
after the animals. “A lot of Lexington kids don’t know anything about farm life,” said Adria Meier, 17, who has
looked after goats and sheep for three years. “There is so much to learn.”
The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must take a six-hour
class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that
provides vet (兽医) care.
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the
summer. But as his land gets sold, he doesn’t know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club
special is that most of the kids can’t just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the
ban by their mothers, who usually hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don’t cut wool off your goat when there is
wind, and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated. “Tending to animals helps teach us
responsibility. Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn’t something you can simply abandon,”
said Carly Playforth, 16, of Lexington.
8.What is the requirement for kids before they get animals
A.Attend a class. B.Pay certain money. C.Have varied skills. D.Get special club programs.
9.What do we know about the club
A.It offers services unconditionally. B.It pays for their use of the barn.
C.It lets mothers care for animals. D.It allows mothers to push kids.
10.How does Carly Playforth feel about the experience
A.Suspicious. B.Moved. C.Appreciative. D.Opposed.
11.What is the passage mainly about
A.Kids’ life on a sold farm. B.Valuable lessons learned on the farm.
C.A special club intended for Lexington kids. D.A club activity of caring for farm animals.
We found out a tornado was coming. Seconds later, it blew away our house.
The tornado lasted 4 minutes, to us, it felt like a lifetime.” By Carolyn Blanton as told to Juliana LaBianca.
On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and
the sun had been out. And we were just doing our daily routines. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado
than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power
went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the
house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to
navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick
staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out.
I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as
the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me
in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. Everything was
moving.
As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like crushed ice
flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads,
missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
We got close to the staircase landing only to hear the loud ripping sound of our garage door coming off. The
back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside.
By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to
the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado
sucked the door open—we never did get it folly shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were
full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the
house and into the bay.
“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. We used it to store
Christmas decorations.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone.
And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over.
Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.’’
Our neighbour says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit
were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us
were severely injured.

B.Because the wounds caused by the glass were not painful at that moment.
C.Because the author was too frightened to feel the pain at that moment.
D.Because her husband helped to treat the wounds at that moment.
14.What can best describe the author’s feelings after the tornado

15.Where can we most probably find the article
A.In a storybook. B.In a science magazine.

On my granddaughter Mary’ s 21st birthday,I sat with her and her
expired (过期的)driver’ s license on a hard wooden bench at the DMV (the Department of Motor Vehicles),
waiting for our number to be called. The broadcast system announced numbers to call ticket holders to reach the
desk to take an eye test or renew a registration. I felt as though we were staying at a bingo game, waiting for the
winning number to be called so we could jump up and collect the prize.
And on that bench,I had a thought:The seemingly ordinary events I’ ve shared with my granddaughter were
both my adventures and my rewards for just showing up. I grew up in an immigrant (移民)family in the suburb of
Boston. A vacation for us was a bus trip to Central Square, with shopping bags filled with delicious foods like
hard boiled eggs, followed by the muddy sand sucking our toes.
I looked forward to these small outings. It sounded boring to seek out the simple pleasures, but it was not. I
traveled to remote islands,to Europe, and to many of America’ s cities. Those trips were refreshing, but they
were breaks. I prefer the mainstream of the ordinary.
I like the day trips. But the most wonderful time was when Mary and I stayed in the reading room. We talked
about her homework, and played the roles of two thinkers discussing the Enlightenment We had our
private book club, reading A Prayer for Owen Meany and copying the voice of the main character.
All of these ordinary moments are more valuable than the time it will take to travel around the world. Many
people love adventures, like skydiving or climbing Mount Everest. But that is not who I am. I don’t need those
adventure experiences. In the end,it turns out that just showing up is enough for me.
20.What was the author doing at the DMV according to Paragraph 1?
A.Being with Mary to renew a license. B.Preparing to take a driving exam.
C.Playing a bingo game with Mary. D.Celebrating Mary’ s 21st birthday.
21.Why does the author mention her childhood?
A.To express her enthusiasm for traveling. B.To show her simple pleasures as a kid.
C.To show her identity as an immigrant. D.To make a comparison with her life afterwards.
22.What can be implied about the author from the text?
A.She was fond of reading by herself. B.She served as the best teacher for Mary.
C.She had a good relationship with Mary. D.She was a sociable and caring grandmother.
23.What is the best title for the text?
A.The unforgettable experience at DMV B.My pleasant childhood memories
C.My life with my granddaughter D.Happiness from ordinary events
For some years,my mother worked for a charity as

the whole book of raffle tickets.

enjoyment of this sudden wealth was short-lived,and our plans for spending it quickly failed. Our angry mother
took us back to every ticket buyer, making us apologise and give the money back.Thankfully, our sweet

record enabled us to sell nearly the whole book of raffle tickets.(妈妈卖票的时候,我们陪了她很多次,所以
D They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.(他们利用
Thankfully,our sweet neighbours didn’t make a big deal of our “clever”
misbehavior and thus my mother’s fundraising career could continue safely. We were taught a good lesson by our
Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer,
they were very generous.Although there were no actual prizes…(尽管在询问奖品时他们得到的只是茫然的表
故选 A
项。
