Objectives:
1. Instructional objectives (language knowledge and language skills)
Knowledge goals:
a. Topic: Talk about people’s looks.
b. new words and phrases: curly, straight, medium build and medium height.
c. Structures: What does he/she look like , He/She is medium build, and he/she has long hair.
d. Functions: Ss are able to talk about what they look.
2. Educational objectives (affect, learning strategy and cultural awareness)
Emotion goals:
a. Make students have interest and the desire of learning English.
b. Learn to know about different looks, respect every classmate and to form a good habit.
c. To tell the students not to judge a person by appearance and they should be friendly to each other.
3. Personal objectives: improve abilities of listening and speaking.
Focal points:
To master the key words and the target languages in this period.
Difficult points:
To train students how to describe the people’s looks correctly in their daily life.
Procedures and Time Allotment:
Stage 1 Organization and revision( 2mins)
First of all, I will greet my students and encourage them to communicate with me. Then point my hair and ask them to answer if it is long or short, in order to have a simple revision and let them feel happy and relaxed in my class.
Stage 2 Lead-in and presentation(about 12 mins)
At the beginning of our class, let’s enjoy some photos of some famous people. The first one, do you know him
Ss: Yes, he is Li Yong.
T: He is very famous. How about this one
Ss: She is Li Wen.
T: She sings very well. Right
Ss: Yes.
T: Next one, do you know her
Ss: Yes, she’s Zhao Wei. She’s Xiao Yanzi.
T: Many children like her. Do you like her
Ss: Yes,
T: The last one, who’s him Do you know
Ss: Yes, he’s Pan Changjiang.
T: Yeah! He’s very funny, right
Ss: Yeah!
T: Do you know how to describe their looks
Ss: No.
T: OK. Today let’s learn how to describe people’s looks.
Step 1 Hair style
1. Presentation
T: At first, let’s learn how to describe people’s hair styles.(Teach the new word hair) (Write the word on the Bb) Look at this picture, how about her hair, long or short
Ss: Short.
T: Yes, she has short hair. What does she look like
Ss: She has short hair.
T: Look at this picture, how about her hair
Ss: She has long hair.
T: What about her hair
Ss: We don’t know.
T: She has curly hair. Follow me!(Teach the new word “curly”) She has long curly hair.
2. Group-work (Group A and Group B)
A: What does she look like
B: She has long straight black hair. What does he look like
A: He has short straight black hair. What does she look like
B: She has short curly blonde hair. What does she look like
A: She has long curly blonde hair.
Step 2 Height
1. Presentation
T: Now let’s learn how to describe people’s height. (Teach the new word “height”) Do you know him
Ss: Yes, he’s Yao Ming.
T: Yao Ming is very tall. (teach the new word “tall”) What does he look like
Ss: He’s very tall. He has short straight black hair.
T: Do you know this man
Ss: Yes, he’s Pan Changjiang.
T: What does he look like
Ss: He’s short. He has short straight black hair….
2. Group-work (Boys and Girls)
Bs: What does Yao Ming look like
Gs: He is tall. He has short straight black hair. What does Zhao Benshan look like
Bs: He is medium height. He has a cap on his head. We can’t see his hair. What does Pan Changjiang look like
Gs: He is short. He has…
Step 3 Build
1. Presentation
T: Now let’s learn how to describe people’s build. (Teach the word “build”) What does she look like She’s heavy/fat, but she likes playing sports. (Teach the word “heavy”)
2. Chain-work (Three students: A,B,C)
A: (To B) What does she look like
B: She is heavy. She has long straight black hair. She is a little short. (To C)What does she look like
C: She is medium build. She has long curly black hair. She is medium height. (To A)What does she look like
A: She is thin. She has long straight black hair. She is medium height.
★In our life, different people have different looks. But everyone is special. Everyone is important. Don’t judge a person by appearance. Do you think so

Stage 3 Tasks(about 8 mins)
Task 1 Pair-work

Task 2 1a
Now, please look at your books P41 Activity 1a. Match the words with the people in the picture. You can use some letters more than once. I’ll give you 2 minutes, then I’ll ask some students to check the answers.…(The one who is right will get a star ☆.)
Task 3 Chant
Show a slide on the screen, tell the Ss how to do and let them chant together, then the girls and the boys do finally. The purpose is to consolidate the new words , expressions and the structure. Do like this: Talk, talk; show, show; let’s have a talk show! Tall, tall; short, short; he’s tall, I’m short!...
Stage 4 Pre-listening(about 2mins)
Before listening , I’ll say Amy is going to meet one of her friends, look at these people .What do they look like
Who is Amy’s friend What does he or she look like Can you find out him/her Is it her/him
Stage 5 While-listening(about 2mins)
Let’s listen to the conversation, fill in the blanks and help Amy find her friend. Play the tape for the first time for the Ss to listen and finish activity 1b if they can understand.
Stage 6 Post-listening(about 6 mins)
Task 1 Exercises
Ask two Ss to complete the conversation according to the tapes description. And then ask some weak students to practice the conversation orally. (The one who is right will get a star ☆.)
Task 2 Guessing game
Now I’ll tell the Ss I’m really happy that you help Amy find her friend and you can use some English to describe people’s looks. Now we will play a Guessing Game. Describe one of your friends in your group, let the other students guess who he or she is. You can play like this:One student has to come to the front , facing to class, and to describe his friend , the students in other groups guess. The one who guesses the right answer can have a chance to go on with the game.(The one who is right will get a star ☆.)
Stage 7 Summary and consolidation(about 6 mins)
Task 1 Summary
I’ll say to the class: in this class, we know how to describe people about hair, height, and build. Can you tell how to do Let the Ss conclude first and I’ll correct the mistakes if they have. Finally present them on the screen. Let Ss read these sentences and practice orally, in order to summary and consolidate they have learned today. (The one who is right will get a star ☆.)
Task 2 Sing a song
Show the lyrics and let the Ss repeat them. Play the recording for the Ss listen and learn. After listening to the song, they can sing the song together. Its aim is to review the target item they have learned today and to arouse the Ss’ interests.
Stage 8 Homework(about 1min)
1.Write a conversation to describe your friend’s or parents’ looks ,using what they’ve learned today after class.
2. Preview the new lesson from 2a——Grammer Focus.
The ending words: Today we have learned how to describe people, everyone should remember “Don’t judge a person by appearance.”

Teaching Reflection:
Because the content the students will learn is closely related with their own, they are very interested in it . After teaching, I’m sure that they have a strong desire to express themselves. It will be helpful to improve their ability of communication and get to know it is not right to judge a person by appearance and be a friendly to each other.
