A
Elephant reserve
This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.
Country: Thailand
Daily tasks
Gather the elephants at 6:30 am.
Take them to look for food in the forest.
Clean the enclosure(围场).
Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon.
If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch TV.
How this vacation helps
If these elephants hadn’t been rescued, they would still have been living on the streets of Bangkok now. The rural environment is much better for them than the urban environment where there is lots of pollution.
Gorilla safari (野外观兽旅行)
If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions, elephants and rhinos during this safari. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health — if a gorilla catches a cold, it will be extremely harmful to its whole family.
Countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda
Departure(出发班次): 2-3 departures per month from August to December.
How this vacation helps
There are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a ticket, this will pay for the protection of the national park.
Polar bear watching
Every October and November groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is not usual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt for seals, and therefore this is the perfect opportunity to see them.
Area & Country: Arctic, Canada
Departure: sixty trips between Oct 1-Nov 19.
How this vacation helps
If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits to the charity that protects polar bears.
21.Which of the following is the task for elephant volunteers
A. Teaching elephants to swim in the lake.
B. Giving elephants a bath at 6:30 am.
C. Making sure the enclosure is clean every day.
D. Watching TV to learn knowledge about elephants.
22.What do we know about the gorilla safari
A. You can set off in April to see gorillas.
B. You can surely see lions, elephants and rhinos.
C. Human activity has made gorillas’ living area smaller.
D. To see lions in the mountain forests is the best part of the trip.
23.What’s the aim of these activities
A. To help protect the wild animals.
B. To help build more national parks.
C. To help deal with the pollution in cities.

When LeeAnn Kriegh moved to Bend, Oregon, in 2012, she fell in love with the trees, birds and flowers. Then she began to read nature guidebooks but wasn’t satisfied with what she found in local bookstores.
"There wasn’t a book that met my needs," Kriegh said. "I had all the field guides. And they were wonderful, but they didn’t tell me stories or teach me the basics and those were what I needed." Kriegh’s book, The Nature of Bend, was published in 2016. And Kriegh wanted to encourage others to become published authors. She spent about 2,000 hours working on her guidebook, in which she covered 350 species.
"You should be ready to spend time on the topic you write about," Kriegh said. "It’s a lot of work, and you have to have a strong liking for your subject," she added. "Otherwise, it’s going to be put aside."
At first, Kriegh began by sending a plan to a book publisher. Half a year passed before the publisher said no to Kriegh. What he said was that central Oregon seemed too small a market. Kriegh remembered his words. During that time she made a decision that she would take care of all the book’s elements on her own rather than depend on another publisher.
Being a self-publisher, she not only picked up the check for printing, but she also paid for the other parts like marketing that were paid by a publisher. Kriegh worked with more than 40 photographers and local naturalists, and read through many scientific papers for the book.
She’s heard a lot of positive remarks about the way she’s shown facts and stories about these species that help people feel connected and put a smile on their faces.
Kriegh’s work also includes The Nature of Portland. She hopes it will attract people in cities. "The purpose of the book is to get people more interested in nature," Kriegh said. "The more you know about it, the more you care about it and work to take care of it."
24.Why was Kriegh unsatisfied with the nature guidebooks she found
A. They were too expensive for her.
B. They didn’t have stories or basics.
C. They didn’t cover much wildlife in Bend.
D. They couldn’t provide any useful information.
25.What might inspire Kriegh to continue writing books
A. Her dream of becoming an author.
B. Her hope of being successful.
C. Her interest in the subject.
D. Her love of her city.
26.Why did Kriegh publish the book on her own
A. She hoped to take full control of the book.
B. She didn’t have money to pay the publisher.
C. She wanted to enlarge the market in Oregon.
D. She wished to publish the book as soon as possible.
27.What can we know about The Nature of Bend
A. It calls on people to protect wildlife.
B. It is especially proper for people in cities.
C. It makes people feel connected with nature.
D. It encourages people to be creative in writing.
C
For a few months twice a year, the waters off California are home to gray whales moving north or south between the coast of Mexico and the Bering Sea. In 2019, however, it seemed that fewer whales survived the journey north. By the end of 2019, a total of 30 dead gray whales had been washed up on the West Coast: 8 in Washington, 1 in Oregon and 21 in California. Those numbers are unusually high.
"In Northern California, three out of four of the dead whales that had been examined appeared to have died of starvation(饥饿) and one fourth was killed by a ship strike," said Barbie Halaska, a research assistant at The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC), a nonprofit organization that rescues marine mammals in California. Halaska and her colleagues examined the four whales — three young whales and one adult male.
Gray whales were once severely threatened by whalers. Only around 2,000 of them lived in the ocean in 1946, so an international agreement to stop gray whale hunting was signed in order to help the population recover. Gray whales were removed from the United States endangered species list in 1994 when their number grew. TMMC predicts there are now around 26,000 gray whales in the Pacific Ocean, which is about the number before the whaling boom got up steam(声势逐渐强大) almost 200 years ago.
"Although the gray whale population has recovered to a certain degree, the number of dead whales washed up is alarming," Halaska said. "Climate change and decreasing fish stocks are likely key factors in the whales’ poor health."
Halaska stressed that boaters and beachgoers on the West Coast should watch out for gray whales at this time of year.
28.What are the data in paragraph 3 about
A. An agreement to stop killing gray whales.
B. Serious conditions facing gray whales.
C. The evolving development of gray whales.
D. The number of gray whales in different times.
29.What’s Halaska’s attitude towards the population of gray whales
A. Worried. B. Discouraged.
C. Optimistic. D. Uncaring.
30.What may be talked about following the last paragraph
A. The importance of gray whales.
B. Gray whales’ living environment.
C. Things to do to protect gray whales.
D. Ways to increase gray whales’ population.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Gray Whales Are Threatened by Whalers
B. Gray Whales Are in Great Danger of Dying Out
C. Where Will Gray Whales Move to Avoid Being Hunted
D. Why Did Many Gray Whales Die on California’s Coast
D
The victims(受害者) were carried in one by one, their paws and fur burned, suffering from thirst and fear. Their caretakers dealt with their wounds and laid them in baskets with the only thing that was familiar to them — the leaves. As fires have burned more than two million acres in Australia, dozens of koalas have been rescued. The animals are being treated in rescue centers, and at least one private home, along the country’s east coast.
The difficult situation of the koala — a national symbol of Australia — has raised questions among scientists about what it will take to protect biodiversity (生物多样性) in a country which is prone to big fires, extreme heat and lack of water. Australia has already been among the highest rates of species extinction(物种灭绝) in the world.
The bad situation goes beyond koalas. Recently, tens of thousands of bats fell from the sky in temperatures over 107 degrees Fahrenheit in northern Australia. Kangaroos destroyed the grapes in Canberra because of drought.
"Climate change and human influence have changed the situation so much that the government needs to rethink its way to protect wildlife at once," Dr. Bowman said, suggesting measures like feeding animals and moving animals to new places.
Koalas, unlike kangaroos, birds or snakes, do not escape from fires. Instead, they stay in the treetops and curl themselves into a ball for protection, waiting for the danger to pass. Therefore, though the fires are still burning, a rescue team has been searching the area carefully to look for survivors.
32.What do the victims in the first paragraph refer to
A. Animals injured in fires.
B. Bats falling from the sky.
C. Kangaroos driven by drought.
D. Koalas rescued from the fires.
33.Which of the following may cause the extinction of wildlife
A. Wildfires that seldom happen.
B. Extremely hot weather in Australia.
C. The never-changing climate in Australia.
D. Not having enough money to take measures in Australia.
34.What can we draw from Dr. Bowman’s words
A. Human activities have little influence on animals.
B. The government cares little about the wild animals.
C. It’s time for the government to rethink its way of protection.
D. Scientists are concerned about the bad situation of wildlife.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. National Symbol of Australia: Koalas
B. Measures Needed to Prevent Climate Change
C. Saving the Endangered Wild Animals in Australia
D. Saving the Fire Victims Who Cannot Escape: Australia’s Koalas

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scoldings(责骂) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly on the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. Then she stood beside a stand, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, do you want to have the noodles "
"Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me," she replied.
"That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today," said the seller. "Come in."
After a while, the seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What’s wrong with you " asked the seller kindly.
"Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street gave me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no concern for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled and said, "Do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her " Jenny sat there, speechless and shocked; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered(饱经风霜的) hands. "Why didn’t I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she did for me "
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Only around 2,000 of them lived in the ocean in 1946""Gray whales were removed from...there are now around 26,000 gray whales in the Pacific Ocean"可知,1946年大约只有2 000只灰鲸生活在海洋中,在1994年灰鲸数量增加。
Although the gray whale population has recovered to a certain degree, the number of dead whales washed up is alarming"可知,Halaska认为,虽然灰鲸数量在一定程度上已经恢复,但死亡的鲸鱼数量令人担忧。 故选A项。
As fires have burned...dozens of koalas have been rescued"可知,此处的受害者指的是从火中被救出的考拉。

Climate change and human influence...to protect wildlife at once"可知,Dr.
36.E 上文中的"we are in need of a pet to help relieve anxiety and provide company for the lonely days"说明养宠物的必要性,下文中的"There are simply too many benefits to list"说明养宠物有许多益处,E项"宠物对我们心理健康的积极影响是惊人的"承上启下,符合语境,且E项中的"positive effects"与文中的"many benefits"相呼应,故选E。
根据本段中的"we can often find ourselves...feel much better"可知,宠物可以帮助人们缓解孤独。 故选A。
结合选项可知,F项中的"heading out for a walk"与上文中的"going outdoors"呼应,"may not seem attractive"与下文中的"feeling calmer, more relaxed and more energetic"是转折关系。

One possible version
Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in, so she sat in front of the house. "Where might my mother be " she wondered. "Is she really so angry with me that she doesn’t want to care about me " Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scoldings from her mother were due to the fact that her mother really cared about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head, seeing the familiar face of her mother. "There you are! I’ve been looking for you," her mother said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. "Mum, I’m so sorry. Thank you for all you have done for me," she expressed her sincere apology and gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently.
