There are many differences between Chinese eating habits and Western eating habits. In the West, everyone has their own __11__ of food. But in China the dishes are placed one the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, there must be a lot of food prepared for you. Chinese are very __12__ of their culture and will do their best to show their hospitality (好客).

If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite“Thanks”and leave the food there. Don't __15__ your chopsticks upright into the rice bowl. Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody __16__, the shrine (神龛) to them will have a bowl of sand or rice with two chopsticks which are stuck upright in it.
It is impolite to set the teapot down with the spout (壶嘴) facing __17__ somebody. The spout should always point to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward (向外) from the table. Don't hit your bowl with your chopsticks. Beggars (乞丐) hit their bowls, so this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too __18__ in a restaurant, people will tap their bowls. If you are in someone's home, it is like offending (冒犯) the cook.
( ) 11. A. table B. plate C. favorite
( ) 12. A. afraid B. tired C. proud
( ) 13. A. knives B. forks C. chopsticks

Many people love traveling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you're traveling in Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the US you need to give people more personal space. Also, it's rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate. It's OK to start smoking before other people finish eating in some restaurants, which you mustn't do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that's bad luck.
When you're traveling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don't forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family's home, don't admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it's not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!
( ) 19. Which of the following statement is TRUE
A. We can admire anything valuable in an Arab family’s home.
B. In China, people cannot smoke before other people finish eating.
C. In Russia, it’s impolite to shake hands with people in a doorway.
( ) 20. What does the underlined word “interrupt” mean in Chinese
A. 跟随 B. 打断 C. 附和
( ) 21. What is the CORRECT order of the subheading(小标题) from Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 5
① Eating out ② In the room ③ Body language ④ Face-to-face communication
A. ②③④① B. ④①②③ C. ③④①②
( ) 22. What does the writer want to tell us
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. When is Rome, do as the Romans do.
( ) 23. What is the best title for the passage
A. Culture shock B. Table manners C. Public rules

Emojis
Emojis might be the language that can be understood by everyone in the world. Pictures are used to put meanings across
. New emojis come out every year. They show what people think about, like and care about. Also they show pop culture and new culture trends. It seems that emojis are a mirror of the world we live in.
)The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. But it is also a place where we pay little attention to whether or not our language skills are becoming poorer.
According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills were not so good as before. It’s believed that digital technology and Internet memes(表情包) have changed their communication habits.
For example, direct expression is more often used to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji.
(
Body Language
在不同的文化中,体态语有完全不同的意义。
While in some Asian countries, it is rude to look straight at a person while you are talking, but in the US and Europe, this means you are interested in what someone is saying.
)Words are being used less. For example, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them.
If this continues, it can influence our ways of thinking. When we use expressions without thinking, it means we have become too lazy to express our real feelings. If teenagers are used to casual(不正式的) methods of expression like emojis, they could lose the ability to use words properly.
To improve our language skills, we should try to think independently and use different words to show our feelings. What’s more, while communicating face to face, we should pay attention to our body language because it’s believed that 65 percent of communication is done through body language. Body language isn’t the same in different countries. To communicate properly with foreigners, you should learn something about body language.

In Western countries, you should pay attention to the rules for the invitation.
When you here Westerners say “Drop in anytime (随时来玩).” or “Come and see me soon.”, you should realize that it doesn't mean you are welcomed to come over to their house at any time. It's wise to telephone first if you are really going to visit someone.
Never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I may not be able to come.” If you are not able to come after accepting the invitation, be sure to tell those who invite you in advance (提前) that you will not be there and give your direct reason to them. Don't forget to apologize if you are unable to be present.
When you have accepted the invitation to a party or a dinner, it's polite to bring small presents with you, such as drinks, flowers or chocolate. Sometimes Westerners may take you out to dinner in a restaurant, but it does not mean that they are going to pay the bill at the end of the meal. They might want to “go Dutch”, which means to pay separately (分别地).
If you don't want to cause any misunderstanding, it's helpful to learn from what is mentioned above.
