All through grade school, I got extra help with schoolwork. If I got a D, I was very happy. If I got a C-minus (C-), I had achieved greatness. A’s and B’s were a kingdom I could never enter.
Once my teacher, Miss Mills, had given me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, “Wow! This time, I’m going to pass”. The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was carper. I wrote that one down: c-a-r-p-e-t. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came neighbor-I wrote down the letter n. Then rhythm-I knew there was an r. Suburban-I wrote s-u-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D-minus. Where did the words go
Some people talk about information sliding off your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever (未能充分发挥学习潜力者).
Now I know I have dyslexia(诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see the as teh, and bird as brid. My brain learns differently. A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I know that even if I learn differently, I can still be filled with greatness.
Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and co-author of children’s books, I tell children that everyone has something special inside. It’s our job to find out what that is and get it out, and give it to the world as a gift.

Can plants talk Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help:"I'm being attacked!"When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂; 蜜蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds; but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the "wood wide web". The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a "firewall" to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to "talk" with them ourselves.
31. What will plants do when they are attacked by insects
A. They will kill the insects by themselves. B. They will control the wasps to kill the insects.
C. They will send out signals to ask for help. D. They will produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help.
32. How are the wood wide web linked by fungi
A. By making noises with their roots. B. By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.
C. By sharing food and information with each other. D. By spreading chemicals to each other.
33. What is the writer's intention of the last paragraph
A. To give people hope for further studies. B. To praise scientists for their great achievements.
C. To call on people to protect the plants on Earth. D. To inspire people to communicate with plants.
34. What is the structure of the passage
35. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Secret Language of Plants B. The Study about the Plant Warning System
C. The Plants that Give Warnings D. Why Scientists Do Research about Plants
D
A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it
·If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying. ·If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday. ·If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
36. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The situation. B. The crime scene.
C. A new and difficult word. D. Everything that is known.
37. If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”
A. They each pay half. B. Jim pays every time.
C. They take turns paying. D. Their parents pay for them.
38. How does the author explain his ideas about root words
A. By giving a fact. B. By taking an example.
C. By telling a story. D. By having a discussion.
39. “Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root
A. My brother is my senior by two years. B. He was ill so he was absent from school.
C. A criminal was sentenced to death by law. D. 60 students were present at the sports meeting.
40. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage

A. B. C. D.

Methods of learning English
Here are my methods of learning English. First, I usually watch English movies and listen to English songs. I think it’s a relaxing way to learn the correct pronunciation and proper expressions. Second, reading passages on the same topic helps a lot in learning new words. In this way, the new words can be repeated and I can understand their meanings better. What’s more, it’s a good habit to keep a diary in English. That helps me think in English and improve my writing skills as well.
English is a bridge which connects the world and us. It’s interesting to learn it. I hope I can make greater progress in the future.
