I asked my dad if I had ever made him cry before because I couldn’t remember ever seeing him cry.
“There was once,” he said.
He told me that when I was one year old, he put a pen, a piece of paper money and a toy in front of me. He wanted to see which one I would pick. It’s a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do when their kids are one year old. According to this tradition, it shows what the kid will value most when he or she grows up. For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be an intelligent person in the future. If the kid takes the money, it means he or she will value money more than others and become rich. If the kid takes the toy, it means he or she will like fun things and play a lot.
My father was doing it because he was curious (好奇的). It was interesting for him to see which one I would pick.
He said that I just sat there and stared at the three things. He sat across from me and waited to see the result.
According to him, I moved toward him and he held his breath. Then I pushed everything aside and went right into his arms. Tears (眼泪) came to his eyes. He didn’t realize that he was one of the choices.
And that was the first and only time I made him cry.

“How about being able to provide for your family ” A blonde girl named Sandy in the front suggested as an answer.

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can't win all the time. However, we can lean something valuable from every failure. This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can't be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn't work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we'll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations to the winners and share in their happiness, we won't feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly. they finally win.
36.What can we learn from every failure according to the text
A.A way of life. B.A valuable thing. C.A general rule. D.A secret of success.
37.In the writer's eyes, why did Edison achieve success
A.He got help from others. B.He happened to make it.
C. He avoided possible mistakes. D.He saw the bright side of losing.
38. What does the underlined word “disgraceful" probably mean
A.Bad. B.Personal. C.Dangerous. D.Interesting.
39. What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition
A.Express the regrets. B.Forget the failure.
C.Share in the winners' enjoyment. D.Join in another competition.
40.What is the best title for the text
A. Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B. Experience in Dealing with Problems
C.Advice on How to Be a Good Loser D.Advantages of both Success and Failure

The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure, and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after Failure. It seems that one cannot exist(存在) without the other.
Accepting failure is not easy for many, though. We are often unwilling to accept failure because our professional fame depends on success. ____51____ In the past ten years, for example, some scientific magazines have published reports of failed tests. It is believed that scientists can learn from “negative(负面的)” results and that this can finally lead to positive results
___52____ The ABN AMRO bank started an Institute(机构) of Brilliant Failures to learn more about what works and what doesn’t in banking. Similarly, Eli Lilly and Company had failure parties to study the drugs(药物) that don’t work.
In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes. ____53____ The product, though unique(独特的) at the time, was expensive and heavy, besides, some of its most important features(特点) didn’t work properly. As a result, it became one of Apple’s biggest failures, and in 1998, the company stopped selling it. However, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, believed in the product and he began to find out ways of improving it. In time, this led to the production of the iPhone and the iPad, two of the company’s most successful products.
___54_____ Not only should we try to learn from it; if we want to succeed, we must also be persistent. Though Apple stopped selling the Newton in 1998, the first iPhone wasn't available until 2007. It took a lot of research and hard work to go from the Apple Newton to iPhone, but in the end, the effort became successful.
All in all, there is a lot we can learn by studying mistakes. Perhaps the most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides of the same coin. ___55____
A. One truly cannot exist without the other. B. We are brave enough to face difficulties. C. In the early 1990s, Apple created a phone called the Apple Newton. D. The business world already understands the value of negative results. E. The Apple Newton has won popularity with people all over the world. F. However, things are slowly changing, especially in business and science. G. The story of the Apple Newton can teach us an important lesson about failure.

第二部分 写作——范文
Learning to Manage Our Own Lives
These days, we Chinese teenagers often depend on our parents in our daily lives. we can’t deal with difficulties by ourselves. So it’s important for us to learn to manage our own lives.
I think our parents should believe in us and never do everything for us. Sometimes it’s OK to give us proper advice and they should allow us to make our own decisions. Also, I think parents should encourage us to face the problems bravely and try to solve them.
For me, I seldom did housework in the past, because I thought it is our parents’ work. This is a wrong opinion. We should learn to do housework like sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. I hardly cooked either. When my mother was on business, I realized I must learn to cook by myself. After that, I find that cooking is not as difficult as it seems.
In short, the earlier we manage our own lives, the better it is for our future.
