My weekend
To arouse the students’ awareness of environmental-protecting, the Student Union of our
school organized a rewarding activity — Tree Planting last weekend.
Early in the morning, my classmates and I headed for a hill nearby with tools and seedlings.
On our arrival, we got down to working together as planned. Some dug the pits and put seedlings
in, some filled the pits with earth, and others watered them. Through our joint efforts the hillside
was lined with rows of seedlings, bathed in the sunshine.
Tired as we were, we tasted the joy of labor.

For the past three summers, Jenny Howard has worked on Seal Island, Maine. Howard, who
holds a bachelor’s degree in arts and biology with an environmental science concentration from
Kenyon College in Ohio, is the supervisor for Project Puffin, a seabird restoration project. She and
some volunteers monitor and protect the seabirds during the summer breeding(繁殖) season.
The puffin with a colorful beak is often referred to as a “sea parrot”. They were hunted more
than 150 years ago for food and feathers and disappeared from Seal Island, once home to the
largest puffin habitat in Maine. Dr. Steve Kress, founder of Project Puffin, reintroduced the puffin
to the island 40 years ago.
From mid-May to mid-August, crews live in tents that are on top of 8-foot-wide wooden
platforms, overlooking a rocky beach. “You get really close to people really fast because you’re
spending all your time with them,” Howard said.
The crew brings only what they can carry on their backs when they travel to the island:

clothes, books, and food. There’s no refrigeration on the island, and with the exception of two
solar-powered lights, there’s no electricity either. Food and fresh water are delivered every 10 days
by a local.
The only real structure on the island is the Seal Island cabin. It offers more protection than
the tents and is where most of the research and data entry are done. It’s also a safe place for the
crew to cook and stay warm.
For Howard, the best part of a day spent on the island is getting to play with the birds. “You
see a baby chick, and you can’t help but smile,” Howard said. “It’s a completely different type of
life from the average person, but I just love the work, and I love waking up and getting excited
about what I’m going to do.”

Many people are not aware that most healing herbs(药草) make up today’s modern medicine.
The healing herbs from ancient days are still the healing herbs of modern times. Throughout all of
these years herbs have remained unchanged; their quality remains as strong as ancient man and
animals found it to be thousands of years ago. What has changed is the way man uses these
healing herbs together with modern medicine of today.
Ancient man knew about the many benefits of healing herbs and passed on this knowledge
from generation to generation. Today modern man continues to benefit from the wisdom ages ago.
Actually, herbs can be any plant, tree or shrub(灌木 ) that heals the body. According to early
英语试题 第 3页(共 8页)
writings, man first noticed that when an animal was ill it would bite into specific plants, otherwise
the animal would leave them alone.
Observing animal behaviors is still done today. Ten years ago, researchers at the Gombe
National Park in Tanzania, noticed chimpanzees(大猩猩) that were ill, were eating Aspilia leaves.
Researchers found that Aspilia leaves contained a kind of antibiotic(抗生素). These chimpanzees
no doubt knew this plant would help heal their diseases.
Most plant life has a pleasant smell. The writings of ancient man note that people rubbed
these sweet plants on their bodies to keep insects away.
Some herbs mask the smell of smelly meat. The Egyptians used a variety of herbs to preserve
their dead.
In conclusion, ancient herbs had a variety of purposes, and for thousands of years were used
for the preservation of our foods, and to heal our bodies. Herbs can continue to play an important
part in our lives if we open our minds to their importance and usefulness. In my opinion, it is
always better to treat naturally with herbs, than to treat illnesses with man-made medicines. There
are few if any side effects to taking herbs.

12. What does the example of chimpanzees suggest
A. Chimpanzees are clever animals.
B. Man began studying herbs long ago.
C. Aspilia leaves can cure many diseases.
D. Animals helped man discover healing herbs.
13. Why did ancient people rub the sweet plants on their bodies
A. To drive away insects. B. To heal their diseases.
C. To make their bodies sweet. D. To mask the smell of their bodies.
14. What does the underlined word “preserve” mean in paragraph 5
A. Make the dead safe. B. Avoid losing the dead.
C. Prevent the dead from being rotten. D. Keep the dead in a perfect condition.

A. He thinks highly of them. B. He refuses to accept them.

Exercise is a way of keeping the body healthy through being active. Another name for
exercise is physical fitness. Most people exercise in their spare time. Sports are some of the most
popular ways to get exercise.
The two main kinds of exercise are aerobic(有氧的)exercise and anaerobic exercise. Sports
such as football and basketball are great forms of exercise. 16
Aerobic exercise is energetic movement that lasts for a certain period of time. 17 The
lungs and the heart work harder to bring in extra oxygen. Swimming, cycling, running and rapid
walking are good examples of aerobic exercise.
Anaerobic exercise is a powerful burst of movement followed by a period of rest. During
anaerobic exercise the muscles need more energy than the body can make with its supply of
oxygen. After the exercise a person feels out of breath because the muscles have worked without
oxygen. 18
Exercise affects every part of the body in positive ways. It improves balance and
coordination(协调). 19 Exercise strengthens the heart and increases the lungs’ ability to take
in oxygen. Through exercise the bones and muscles get stronger, and the whole body becomes
healthy and strong. 20 People who exercise generally have a more positive, happy attitude.
A. This is because they combine both of these types.
B. Frequent and regular exercise helps prevent diseases.
C. Exercise also gives people a greater feeling of well-being.
D. It also improves posture, or the resting position of the body.
E. Weight lifting, jumping and golfing are all types of anaerobic exercise.
F. Physical exercise can contribute positively to keep a healthy weight.
G. During aerobic exercise the body combines oxygen with sugar to get more energy.
